ParticipantThere’s a dearth of Black History Art here…but tons of murals really capturing the heart and soul of this city. Here are four panels in one work done by Jesus “CIMI” Alvarado, a well known Chicano muralist and activist. They are on the walls of the police station in 5 Points, an area that used to be really seedy but has been slowly improving. I probably wouldn’t ride alone around there at night, but for daytime, it was a beautiful day to see these pieces.

This is obsession: Stuck in the mud in Shenandoah National Park this evening. Van wouldn’t budge after hours of trying EVERYTHING! Luckily, Ranger Kevin Moses helped me yank it out. Night had descended and we were locked in the park after-hours but got out with help. Two hours drive later, just enough time before midnight to stock the local Presbyterian Church Pantry (off Rte 236)! Yes, obsession. [emoji468][emoji2191][emoji468][emoji2191]

It’s a good obsession to have — EXTRA points for being stuck in the mud after hours!

LFL located next to 1402 Grandin Ave… but I think it was actually on the corner property on Carl street. Donated this book about a Chinese-American boy trying out for Little League.
[ATTACH=CONFIG]27892[/ATTACH]Sophie, that’s a Chinese-American boy AND baseball — double points! Well done!

World War heroes rest in Alexandria National CemeterySerdar, did you know that the criteria for eligibility for burial in a National Cemetery in the US is being a military veteran or spouse of military veteran? The only exception is there in the Alexandria National Cemetery where 4 civilians who died while trying to catch John Wilkes Booth are buried. If I remember correctly, they drowned in the Potomac. It’s a significant enough exception that it really stuck in my mind when I learned it. It speaks to the fervor in the aftermath of Lincoln’s death. Nice photo, too!

We found these sculptures of painted pieces of twisted car wreckage in somebody’s front yard along MD 210 that looked like public art to us.Sent from Boomer_Cycles via my iPhone using Tapatalk
They look like some of my origami pieces after I’ve gotten frustrated!

Participant2/12/2022 Cemetary or Cemetery
Advertised as “THE” Catholic Cemetery in town, it was quite busy today. A couple of pavilions up, indicating services being held, and lots and lots of families/visitors placing flowers. i took the photo and did not go in, wanting to be respectful.

When I went to Occoquan on January 2, I could not locate either of the LFLs that were supposed to be in Occoquan. Today, as I was riding on Union Street (and not looking for a library) this bookcase caught my eye. I went back to check it out and, sure enough, it is a LFL. It is on the porch of The Preservation Station, an antique store in Occoquan.

Squeezed in a ride between mom’s 85th bd celebration with all of her tennis friends and impending darkness. So a quick dash to Marty Robbins Park where the art du jour is this wonderful basketball and player. Never mind that there are 3 baseball diamonds and 2 soccer fields.

It’s an Infinity bike seat, https://infinitybikeseat.com/ Most bike seats try to put all the pressure on your seat bones, to keep it off your private parts. This one takes a different approach. It cradles the entire fatty part of your butt, so you don’t get a lot of pressure on any one spot. And there is no middle to it, so no pressure on your private parts.
It took a couple of weeks to get used to in the beginning. But since then, it has been the most comfortable saddle I’ve ever owned, particularly for long rides.

I had an Infinity on my second ride with Fuller (half cross country) and never did get used to it. I ended up returning it. One of my long-distance riding friends loved it. Like all saddles — it’s SO blinkin’ individual!

Participant2/11/2022 Nancy Reagan
Did you know that Nancy Reagan’s birth name was Ann Frances Robbins? As luck would have it, El Paso has a park named Robbins . . . um, yeah, it’s Marty Robbins (thanks for the ear worm… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zBzZJd-nfw). But it’s Robbins, so it counts. I think.
Squeezed in this ride after mom’s 85th bd celebration and before it got dark.

Because I was traveling today, the closest I could to Nancy (via her husband) was The airport.

Did you bike to the airport? It’s doable with Reagan but definitely a challenge with IAD!

I wasn’t too excited by this generic and plain looking LFL. However, as I investigated it I was delighted to discover that in addition to being a LFL, it was a geocache container! This LFL was quite full so I was planning to leave a very small “Robin Hood” children’s book in exchange for “The Abstinence Teacher” by NYT best-selling author Tom Perrotta. I noticed a slim volume without a title which I pulled it and opened, thinking it might be a journal begun and abandoned, with yet a number of blank pages. Low and behold, the first page explained that the LFL was a geocache container, with guidance on what that meant and a request to sign the volume which was, in fact, the geocache logbook! Of course I did, and am thinking that geocaching by bike might be a good replacement activity in the non-winter months for the BAFS pointless prize games! A photo of the first page of the logbook in my Strava post for today.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I tried geocaching by bike one summer but found that so many of the caches were co-located with briars and other kinds of deterrence!
