2/16/2022 – Historic House
Charles Drew House. So, I didn’t have to go very far to find this house. He was partially inspired to go into medicine due to the death of his sister Elsie, who died during the 1920 Spanish Influenza pandemic. Her immune system had been weakened by previously having suffered through tuberculosis. This guy discovered how to separate Blood Plasma from the Red and White blood cells, and started the Red Cross Blood Bank. Way to go Uncle Charlie! Here’s a link to the Arlington Magazine article about him and the house.

Ha ha – Cate, I just KNEW you were going to use this one today if you got a chance to ride! Famous relatives rock!
It just now occurred to me to ask – is the house privately owned but registered as a National Historic place? Or is it a museum of some type that one can visit?

And did you know that “Taliaferro” rhymes with “Oliver” — at least in Virginia it does.

This makes me really miss White’s Ferry . . . that was one of those fun things to do!

A mural in downtown El Paso depicting the Christ figure on top of Mount Cristo Rey (Christ the King). The Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe provides health care to disadvantaged Hispanic families in El Paso. The mural and sculpture was done by Cesar Inostroza.
I’m trying to find out who the man and woman are on the mural.

Participant2/15/2022 Gazebo
This Gazebo is a Public Art Installation in downtown El Paso. Its official title is “Aztec Pavilion” by Poetic Kinetics.
I laid on the floor of the structure to try to encapsulate some of the intricate ironwork. I could have stayed there all day trying to follow the lines and figures.
It’s a solar energy powered project that serves as a destination and performance place, depending on needs.

A little backstory to this. These were created as works of public art a while back when I was part of the Friends Group at RR. Our friends group was directed to fund one and we didn’t like them so declined to do so. But a regional library couldn’t be left out, so RR ended up with the one the other libraries didn’t want. It suffers greatly due to the use of the library porch as a place for those sleeping rough but it comes in handy for a valentine themed work of art!

ParticipantSqueezed in a ride between mom’s medical appointments, but alas, not 10 full miles.
Still, wanted to share this beauty.

You should have taken the bike to Guadalupe Mt. Park and done a short ride. That would have been the best picture!!
Had to squeeze in a ride between mom’s 10-11:30 cardio therapy and 2pm regular doc appt. No time for travel Didn’t even have time to ride 10 miles!
Biking is fun, but it’s not the most important thing that I do.

Participant2/14/2022 National Park
You’ve heard of Arches National Park? Well, these are at least arches…there are NO National Parks in El Paso. A National Memorial at the Chamizal, and a State Park in the Franklin Mountains … and these Arches have valentine hearts on them!

LFL on Janice Road in Fairfax. This is another Library that is not on the map and that I tripped over after I made a wrong turn on my ride today. Not many children’s books in this library. Also, this is within the neighborhood and walking distance of the middle school so could use books for that level as well.

I love when wrong turns result in new discoveries! Good thing, because I make a lot of wrong turns!

2/13/2022 – Hill Fort
Well, I returned from my Colorado travels and went out for a quick ride. I stayed close to home, so went with the closest one to me. Fort Myer is definitely on a hill as anyone who has ridden the route 50 Bike path between Ft. Myer at Pershing Drive and DC can attest.

Wow! Quick trip! And yes, Ft. Myer is def on a hill!

Participant2/13/2022 Hill Fort
This is the modern day hill fort equivalent in El Paso. High on a hill, the base of which is guarded by a manned gate, with its own water supply, etc. Not sure who they’re protecting themselves from, but as a member of the hoi polloi, I was suitably impressed.
