So a big fancy bollard?
Nope. More like a mostly road blocking “bicycle-friendly gate at the Georgetown side of the aqueduct” that will prevent vehicles from driving upstream. My guess is any gate that blocks traffic is going to also significantly narrow the road for bikes even if it is “bicycle-friendly”.

Can we just talk about dcv’s camera skills? Very good shots sir.
And don’t forgot he is on a fixie on M Street during rush hour! Impressive indeed.

ParticipantGreat riding with dcv and finally managing to catch a glimpse of dickie during our surely daily pass.
Hope everyone has a good day!

That bike and bag plus those fenders look very yummy … I might have to take up randonneuring just for the excuse to own something like that!

Storm risk downgraded. The thuderstorms that rolled through this morning pulled in some cooler air and calmed things down a bit. But all that sun we’re seeing now is cauing a bit more agitation in the atmosphere, so still plenty of chance of some storms popping up here and there through the afternoon. Ride safe, folks.
I do believe that this group of bike commuters may just be even more on top of the current weather trends than the group of kayakers I often surround myself with. That is saying quite a bit!
Oh, and now I’m miffed that I didn’t ride today.

Was I being a PAL, or doing something questionable?
Never fear, you were being a PAL. Predictably stopped at the corner of 50 and Annandale waiting for the light.

ParticipantSaw Shawnofthedread this morning. He looked geared up for weather with full-fenders and such.
Me, I was uber prepared too — driving to the metro … Sigh.

I have one more question: I have Look Keo pedals on my bike, but would recessed cleats be a better choice for the towpath? I can switch to the SPD pedals/mountain bike shoes, but I don’t know what it best, given the potential for mud and what not. Please advise.
Liz
I’d definitely go SPD with recessed cleats. Better in mud but perhaps more Importantly easier to walk around some of the little towns along the way while in search of either second breakfast or ice cream!

Lovely, I live in a flood zone. Time to move the bikes upstairs. Fortunately the kayaks just float ….

Sheldon Brown implies this is a 1970s Raleigh Sprite (though listed as 1960s). No idea if $115 (needs tune up, I’m guessing) is a good deal.
Hmmmm … tempting. I’ve been looking for a tweed bike. There is no way that is from the 1960s though if a 10 speed and with those shifters. And don’t they know they are supposed to take pictures from the drive side??

ParticipantWow! Look at that sky and mile after mile of dirt. Congrats on a excellent ride! I’m sure your playing the role of mother goose was appreciated by all. Well done!

ParticipantYep, I’m in too. Don’t need an extra food ticket though. Like dcv, I’ll be able to carry three bikes if you need a ride.

ParticipantAt Rod’s urging I just signed up for the National Bike Challenge and the Bike Arlington All Stars. Used the https://tapiriik.com/ to link my Strava account and Endomondo. Hopefully it works!
