You’ll have no issues on the Custis all the way to van Buren St.

I LOVE ArlCo parks and rec! Custis was beautifully clear from Rosslyn all the way to EFC. Not only clear but almost totally dry too. A few very minor icey spots but nothing too scary. Such a treat!

I will contribute, but to offset Cyndi’s veggies we need to also get the most fried, meat product-filled appetizer also.

I have nothing against fried food. Bring on the nachos, fries, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, quesadillas! Plenty of fried veggie options ….

I did the Arlington Loop clockwise starting around 3:00 and finishing around 5:00 with a stop at the Central Library. The Custis Trail was clear (I encountered the snow removal demon at the I-66 Glebe Rd offramp overpass), but was wet and on my return there were already spots of black ice. The Custis/MVT connector was clear from the Intersection of Doom to the bottom of the GW Parkway flyover, then the MVT was a combination of snow and ice with a few clear patches in the really sunny spots. The Roosevelt Island Trollheim wooden walkway was very treacherous. I crossed over the George Mason (14th St) Bridge to do a loop around East Potomac Park. The sidepath on the bridge was not cleared and where there had been significant traffic it was starting to ice up. The trail down from the bridge to the CaBi station was very icy, so stay to the sides of the trail. The NPS had cleared all the sidewalks around the Jefferson Memorial and over to the three parking lots along Ohio Dr. The gates at East Potomac Park (Hains Point) were both closed. I was the only cyclist to have ridden there. There were two sets of motor vehicle tracks around the park that drove around the gates. The FMR Trail from the MVT to George Mason was clear, but the sidewalk over 4MR on George Mason was packed snow and ice and the 4MR Trail from there to Glencarlyn Park had not been cleared. The W&OD Trail east of the Custis intersection has not been cleared, but does have motor vehicle double tracks that range from clear pavement to packed snow to ice. The Bluemont Trail is clear and the W&OD from the Custis on past Ohio St is clear.

I would expect significant ice issues tomorrow morning, even on trails that were clear this afternoon.

Ok, so here is my question. I’m still at work. Have ogre with fat knobbies but not studs. Do I 1) ride the trail home, 2) ride the street home 3) ride the (gasp) metro home? All knowing forum I seek your guidance.

Home being EFC metro area in case you didn’t know that already.

Totally fine with me. I’ll bring cash. Just order some veggie things please! Thanks again for organizing!

And Forecast.io says Thursday is supposed to be even colder than Wednesday.

There have been discussions in my family about moving to a warmer climate…

Weather.com says 10 degrees at 7am on Thursday with wind chill of -3. Good times.

    Trails:
All trails were brined yesterday in preparation for the snow.
Crews have made one pass on all the trails that were identified for plowing this year. With this type of snow, we have been able to use our broom attachments to clear the existing snow. Based on the last forecast (4″-6″), we may be changing the attachments to either a plow or the snow blower. Crews will continue to clear the trails throughout the storm and after until clear.

This is so awesome. THANK YOU! Think we can get an update at oh say 5pm on trail status?

Holy moly it was cold on my ride home tonight. Holy moly.

I am not certain I like this FS concept… :p

Really? I was expecting much worse and actually found myself thinking about how nice a night it was! Clearly last winter warped my view of “nice”.

In. Coffee club(s) in the morning, happy hour at night. Maybe we should just ride all day in-between!

Think The Kid and gap year + MAMIL (me). Not entirely sure what that adds up to. The Kid is a much stronger cyclists than I. So a very reasonable thing to do would be to send him off on his own. Another option is to do something cool, but you know, like Inn hopping – where I can take naps and he can go climb the rockies in the afternoon.

The Bon Ton is good for this since you could send him on the long route every day and you could ride the mid or short route. Usually all routes start together but split off from each other somewhere along the way.

We did the Bon Ton Roulet in 2012. Not a formal tour exactly more of an event ride. Still highly recommend it. Great scenery, lovely roads, a variety of route options each day, baggage service, and many, many wineries along the way. It actually is pretty affordable too.

What a spectacular day! The race went off so well and everyone had a great time. I spent so much time running around between marshalling, tending the sand pit, registration and a little racing that I took very few pictures. But Dave took these two:

Racks and stuff may be against the rules. They certainly would be unwelcome by your fellow cyclist. Cyclo is the NASCAR or roller derby of cycling. Expect to crash. Several times.

The pic above explains precisely what I was afraid of doing and why I opted to run those every single time.
