ParticipantAnd new paint in other places, too! Bluemont Trail, for example, and even that little-used 4 Mile Run Trail underpass under George Mason Drive. Better than it was, certainly. Kudos.

ParticipantYup he swung by the Beauregard St @ King Street location I was working, as well. He gets around….

ParticipantAbout a month into a new commuting setup, replacing an older “regular” road bike that has moved onto a next life…
2015 model year CAADX that was nicely discounted. We are still getting acquainted with each other’s habits, but so far so good. Interesting how one bike’s “behavior” in terms of shifting, braking, gearing, etc. becomes sort of ingrained in the subconscious – and changing anything (for me, at least) takes some focus at first. Still, all’s good.

Participant“Unsurprisingly, traffic is pretty heavy for this morning’s rush hour.”
Funny, didn’t really seem so….while biking to work….. :p

ParticipantThe current tires are listed at 360g FWIW. Some recommendations were for tires twice that or worse. Ideally want to stay in that range.
Again, the vast majority of miles will be on pavement, so really looking for something pavement / commuting oriented vs. offroad focused.

The NBC leaderboard must have magical powers of anticipation….either than, or Consular rides *so fast* that his rides haven’t even happened yet…..(yeah, I bet this is just a time zone issue for NBC, but it is still cool….)

ParticipantHelmets may or may not really protect the user in terms of concussions, but they can definitely blunt the direct effects of a fall. Said another way, your brain may still get shaken (tho possibly to a lesser extent; I think that’s a supposed feature of the MIPS-equipped helmets) but you may not crack your skull or tear out your hair, at least to the same degree, if you have a fall with a helmet on.
Helmet negatives: Can get stinky / sweaty, can make your hair look *not* great, bulky to carry around.
Helmet positives: As rcannon100 notes, they do provide some measure of protection in some situations. They also protect the rider’s head from surprise attacks by low-hanging branches and the like.
Each rider should do his or her own “helmet math” and determine the answer.

I find Clarendon quite bikeable, as long as you watch out for all the regular things one has to watch out for. And if the main roads aren’t to your liking, the neighborhood roads make great alternatives.
But yeah, the only thing I bike to on Columbia Pike is Papillon, and all my visits are commando-style.
With some planning I find you can hit many points on the Pike *without riding much* on the Pike. Be it on bike blvds / parallel streets or via intersecting roads coming from north or south of the Pike, one can access Pike stuff. Riding ON the Pike is less viable in too many places at this time.
As far as “all my visits are commando-style” I’m not sure how one’s choice of underwear affects biking safety on the Pike….

ParticipantIn many ways a simple approach is to avoid the Pike. Unless one needs to go directly where the pike goes (east<-->west) it is easier and safer and more fun to simply avoid the area. Maybe when all / some of the changes noted in the article are done…

Good one – that’s what I was thinking of in response to Inner Ear.

ParticipantOk, this is as close as I could get (I think) to the Alexandria City high point – located @ the woody part of the campus of Episcopal HS, across from Ft. Ward Park:

Basically, if I were to go past the fence (South) I’d get to a rise that is the high point. Don’t know if that spot has a name – it lists as being 280 ft AMSL.
Here’s a pano showing the location as it relates to Ft. Ward’s entrance.

ParticipantIs that (Minor Hill) the spot sort of near Williamsburg MS that used to have the plastic “grates” as the tennis court surface? From the pic it looks like work is underway….assuming so, what’s planned for that spot now?
