ParticipantSo I believe I am it, so let’s go with this – my bike in front of marketing or promotional material (that happens to also be public art in this case).

ParticipantHoping to drag my wife out to join me on Sunday’s farewell ride, tho not sure that’ll fly…at any rate, we met once (recent Aquatic Gardens ride) and I’ve enjoyed stalking via the forum for a while. The factoids, the tours, the tidbits that add spice to our lives, and the general positive attitude….all are appreciated, Bobco, and Washington state shall gain what the Washington area shall lose. Enjoy the left coast and learn to love rain, I guess.

Oh sure, “politely” waved you on while they were busy doing something reckless. Glad it didn’t result in catastrophe, that is indeed a dangerous intersection.
Weren’t there a couple of PAL events at the Weenie Beanie recently to discuss redesigning that area? I didn’t make it to any of them, but maybe someone else can report on the status.
There was a collection of friendly PAL-advocates last weekend helping cyclists navigate the crossings. Helpful and appreciated!
This whole intersection-slash-clusterfart is being examined as part of the overall 4 Mile Run Valley planning process. There are warm feelings regarding the development of some sort of bypass (bridge, perhaps) that will allow trail users to avoid at-grade road crossings unless they really, really want to get into that sort of thing. Won’t happen soon, but at least there is movement.

Thanks for the great ride and fine company. The Gardens were quite a sight. Some of the lily pads were simply massive! I wanted to try to ride one….maybe one day.

Steve O had them on display at the Ballston pit stop this morning. It’s cool, counting back the years with each color!
Aha, was wondering after the fact if that was him / his shirts. I commented to him (he was manning the t-shirt table, of course) that I was rocking my 2007 BTWD shirt to celebrate 10 years of this stuff, and he casually waved a hand over the collected mass of history that is his BTWD shirt collection. All wrapped in plastic, of course. Guess I have more work to do in order to catch up.

ParticipantSpeaking of tickets, I have two available since (a) I did not check the calendar and realize that this happens on Mothers’ Day, which my wife treasures as a sleep-in opportunity, and (b) I’m still not cleared post-surgery for any sort of distance. Bummer. Anyway, my loss is someone’s gain….Who wants a pair of tix for a total of $30 (I’ll cover the transfer fee of $10 x 2)? Message me.

ParticipantDoes anyone know what’s up with the former meadowy area (now cleared) just east of Carlin Springs Road @ the W&OD? There used to be a desire trail thru there, and there was brief talk a while back about paving that trail. Since then I thought the idea was to leave it “as natural as possible”…and now it is clear cut. What’s next?

ParticipantVisited a few pertinent locales this October. Madrid has a reasonably evolved bikeshare system….using e-bikes! This makes sense since some of Madrid’s terrain is hilly. If it’s any reference point, most regular bikers in town use MTBs. Saw an interesting variety of bikeshare users. The system was accessible for non-subscribers. I confess to slacking and not trying the system. Hey, a reason to return! Most riders that I saw were solo (not in groups) and they tended to behave fairly well. There is less in the way of dedicated infrastructure, but sharing of space / roads seemed to work pretty well.
London’s bikeshare system seemed similar to ours (sorry, did not get pics). It also was available for temporary use. Most regular riders, by contrast, rode road bikes, sometimes in large and fairly swift packs. Lots of bike lanes (protected or just marked) and there seemed to be a reasonable respect for cyclists, at least where I was. London’s “no car zone” downtown (where any cars transiting the zone at certain times have to pay fees, sort of like downtown HOT lanes) helps get folks out of cars and into alternate transport systems, including bikes.
Of course, in both cases there are highly evolved public transport systems (subway + bus) that serve the vast majority of residents.

…any ability to lobby for more serious bike infrastructure improvements. Don’t know that the current or anticipated bike traffic along that road warrant a more thorough approach.

ParticipantMinor improvements are better than none. Right now that is not a pleasant place to ride most of the time. The proposed improvements will help, some. Not sure if there is
