Does anyone have change in elevation, and distance between stations?

Hi all, I’ve put together a few more visualizations on this:
-The “balanced-ness” of the system – net trips sent/(received): here and here
-Some maps showing where the casual users are, length of trip, and “balanced-ness” by stations here

I rode the Custis and a few bits of the W&OD and MVT again around 3pm, and it was pretty much all clear, clear to the pavement. Great riding eastbound with tailwinds!

Honestly, the bigger issue is salt on the roads, yuck.

I rode the MVT and Custis at 7am this morning. Thin snow cover in areas sheltered from wind. Where the trails are exposed to the wind, most snow has blown off and it’s smooth sailing. Use caution in the snowy parts, and thicker tires are better, but its not too bad.No black ice to report.

The signs from the MVT lead you down a short path to the parking area in the back of the daily parking garage – first pic below. There are also some bike racks at the ground level of the Metro station (second pic below), but they’re a bit hard to find if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Good place to be aware of your surroundings. It will become more familiar to people once the bridge over the train tracks opens, but won’t really be useful unless we can rely on the WNY connection.

Great story! I’m impressed you ran in and back from McLean – that would wipe me out.

Also, I’ve got a rack on my road bike too :).

Lots of options! Now you’ll have to report back for which you like :). Good luck.

    Hi Jason,
Welcome to bike commuting! You sound like you’ve got just the right attitude for your commute. The ride from Courthouse to downtown DC is a pretty reasonable one, and there are a number of different routes you can take.

Here’s a suggestion for one of the more safe routes – nearly all on bike lanes or off-street trails, and easy crossings. But, it’s also a bit long – about 6 miles, where a more direct route might take you 5 or so. Basically, this route sends you out of your way to avoid cars. There are more direct routes out there, if you feel more comfortable riding in mixed traffic. The views on the Mt. Vernon Trail are gorgeous, and the hill from Rosslyn to Veitch is fun in the morning but a slog in the afternoon. http://g.co/maps/rhvpv

If the morning ride is a bit tiring, you can always bail and use Metro or a bus for the other half of the ride – throw your bike on a Metrobus (38B or Circulator might help), or wait a bit and bring your bike home on Metrorail in the evening anytime after 7pm.

    Good luck, and have fun!

Actually, there is another route that’s not so long and avoids the killer hills of the Custis.
This map shows Memorial Bridge to the intersection of Custis and W&OD using the less steep way through the base: http://g.co/maps/gcq57 It actually may be shorter than the MVT-Custis route.

Very cool! I’ll have to try it sometime (during the gate-open window). Especially going west – westbound Custis “feels” hillier to me than east, but it could be my imagination. Thanks!
