Feel free to drop any comments about BTWD here, including the single plastic wraps on the shirts. Last year’s cluster (shorting the entire order) was replaced with a new cluster (small sizing, shrinking shirts, wasteful plastic) and we will share with the overlords at MWCOG.

And the 2014 Boat to Work was indeed fun times, when I found myself in thigh-deep water under the West Glebe Bridge on FMR Trail. Was in the pre-dawn darkness with fogged-up glasses and couldn’t make out that the smooth gray surface in front of me was not concrete but dirty water being held back by the retaining wall.

    Depends on the tides.

Note on your green BTWD 2023 T-shirt: I was unable to get the XL I had requested so I took a 2XL that was offered. The kind staffer distributing them mentioned that the shirts were running small this year. I just ran mine through the wash and it shrank dramatically, so much that it won’t fit me (whereas an XL has always fit in the past — granted I’ve put on a few extra # over the winter months). So you might wash yours in cold water and/or avoid the dryer.

Looks like they went with a new shirt vendor this year based on the individually wrapped shirts. There was a shirt-tastrophe last year. The shirts didn’t arrive until 2 days before and there was a mad rush to get them sorted for distribution and pretty much every pit stop got shorted on shirts.

I took a look at the bike counter dashboard and it looks like the counter that’s not showing data is the one at the base of the concrete bridge over the Parkway instead of the one on the ramp from Trollheim to TR Bridge.

To anyone who regularly crosses the Roosevelt Bridge to/from DC: Have you seen any damage to the bike/ped counter on the ramp going up from Trollheim?

The feed flatlined a couple of days ago. David Patton, Arlington Bike/Ped Planner, will be getting out to inspect but was wondering it any regulars had noticed if anything was amiss.

    Pics would be great, too.

    TIA,

Just got an email from my contact at Dominion regarding the boardwalk at the Glebe substation work.

She asked “I wanted to check in and see if you have any other feedback on the boardwalk since its been in operation for a few weeks now. Anything good or bad you would like to share or have heard from others?”

I told her I would seek input from the forum and share the responses.

    Operators are standing by …

Echo the other comments. The asphalt installed on the sidewalk along Route 1 between Four Mile Run and Glebe has sunk very badly and presents a high risk of falls for anyone using the sidewalk. Would appreciate if they added another layer of asphalt and gave it a very good compacting.

I just made my first ride of ’23 yesterday, so — not *quite* a Freezing Saddles participant this time around ;)
But love the cause and made a donation tonight, belatedly… any credit for Freezing Saddles scores should accruing to Judd’s team (on behalf of his continued MVT efforts; god, what a treat to ride past Daingerfield and not have any of my teeth chip from the root bulges!)

I vote that Chris counts as an honorary Team 3 Salted Slug for the team prize.

Saw one of these being ridden in the wild on the MVT last night but didn’t have time to see if I could find one to ride. They all have the new seatpost quick release handle which is pretty nice since I often struggle with adjusting the seat. The seatposts also go to 11 instead of 10.

In Washington, DC today Mayor Bowser announced the Capital Bikeshare fleet will receive another 700 new generation CaBi+ e-bikes for DC. Lyft also announced at the same event another 150 e-bikes of the same design for Fairfax County. Together these will double the size of the CaBi+ e-bike fleet. The new design are the same as the 2nd generation e-bikes introduced by Lyft in New York City for the Citi bikeshare fleet.

I have another item to add to the repair list:

This is the bridge over Boundary Channel that connects the Pentagon north parking lot with Columbia Island and Lady Bird Johnson Park. Approaching a severe state of decay. Who has juristiction here- The Pentagon Reservation or National Park Service?

NPS does. It’s fairly close to needing a complete redecking. Not sure if it’s all the original wood from when the bridge opened in 1977. From pictures I’ve seen of the opening the vertical elements appear to be original except for a few obvious repairs.

I just got an email from the ArCo project manager who said “We are aware of the issue and it will be an item for the punchlist.”

Thanks for e-mailing them. It was on my to do. The FoMVT storage unit is in Shirlington and we are hauling loaded down trailers over this curb and it would totally suck to have to unload and reload a trailer for a pinch flat on the way to an event.

Looks like one lane of motor vehicle traffic each way. Exposure to turning traffic, but limited. I can live with that to a point. Big question-when will they finish work underneath the bridge so that the trail route can reopen?

My understanding is that the trail detour will be in place until the end of the project in 3 months. With the bridge opened to vehicles, trail users have a pretty long wait to get the signal.
