Impossible. Paladins are Lawful Good and Steve O has been firmly determined to be Evil Steve.

Judd, Good idea and clearly recognizable, but there’s something we need to consider……it makes getting on and off the bike a real problem; it’s hard to get a leg over the top bar and saddle without hitting the flag with calf or ankle. I had trouble keeping my balance, trying to lift my leg over the bar in different ways. Just sayin’.

or having I know from my Halloween Hello Kitty flag

Pointless prize for the person who gives up going for a ride the most times because they can’t get their leg past the safety flag.

So it was mentioned this morning that Whole Foods Thursday CC will usually be indoors for the winter (outside this AM, because nice weather). I am wondering which CC’s are planning to remain outdoors, which indoors, and for those that vary with the weather, if anyone could (I know this is a difficult ask) somehow specify the weather conditions that will lead to indoors (or to outdoors)?

For the benefit of those of us willing go to CC again, but not quite ready to eat indoors, even with vaxxed friends (or waiting to get boosted).

    TIA

Tuesdays are at Mah Ze Dahr on Crystal Drive and inside when it’s cold. The decision on inside or outside is based on negotiation among attendees on whether it’s nice enough outside or not.

I gotta go on a CaBi Quest. I’m at 154 but was surprised it was that many.

Have followed Komo on this route multiple times. Just the one little stretch that sucks. Otherwise lots of trail riding, backroads, quiet neighborhoods and empty industrial park roads.

Took this picture on the route last month.

It would be, *except*… for the current volume of high speed traffic running well over the posted speed limit, and no shoulder, paved or otherwise, anywhere. So right now, trading one set of hazards for another. Even for the fit, fast, and fearless.

Now if someone will do a Critical Mass ride, I’m in.

The primary motivation for Barbara Lynch, one of the people responsible (along with Ellen Pickering) for the MVT existing advocated for it because she didn’t like her husband riding on the Parkway.

The Parkway South Safety Study had some interesting data on the percentage of drivers exceeding the speed limit which was most of them and also by a lot.

It feels like I’m seeing a lot more front strobes on the MVT this year.

Are bikes actually banned from the Parkway by Federal Law or have we just been bullied?

Riding a bike on the Parkway is prohibited through the Superintendent’s Compendium. Each park has its own compendium setting forth the rules of the Park. It has all kinds of stuff like park hours, fees and restrictions on activities like fires and camping.

The GWMP compendium is at http://home.nps.gov/gwmp/learn/management/superintendent-s-compendium.htm

Had to adjust the location for the trail bump work this weekend (Sorry Dan K!) The new work site is going to be at Belle Haven Park. The original location near the power plant bridge is going to require some cutting of roots, which needs to occur when the trees are dormant to reduce injury. The very warm fall means that all of the trees in the area were still very green. I’m looking to reschedule the power plant bridge work in December.

Hope folks can join us this Saturday to make the trail a little bit better: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/trail-bump-repair-near-belle-haven-park-tickets-179586075787

Regarding the upcoming work of the FoMVT, please allow me to nominate what I think might be the currently most dangerous spot: the asphalt right at the north end of the short concrete stretch directly behind the power plant.

There are several very high root heaves that southbound cyclists encounter at the bottom of a steep downhill stretch that then leads right into an already dangerous blind curve (dangerous enough to warrant the mirror that is thankfully there). The root heaves significantly increase the hazard there.

It just so happens that we are working on that area next week and are in need of a lot of volunteers still. The heaves between the power plant bridge and marina towers are likely going to be cut out and patched which is much more labor intensive than using the concrete planer. Here’s another tip of the cap. In addition to their awesome work this summer in de-landscaping to improve visibility at several “hot corners”, The Friends of the MVT have been painting red warning stripes parallel to the worst of the root heaves along the MVT (from my observation, beginning in OT and northward).

As users know, the root heaves run the gamut from bone jarring annoyances to genuine hazards for cyclists and runners alike. Giving them at least a bit of visibility is a good thing, and the upcoming projects under their (and NPS) auspices to fix them is most welcome.

The MVT is in the worst overall shape of the major NOVA trails (e.g., Custis, WOD, 4MR, etc.). It would be so much worse without the efforts of the Friends of the MVT. So to all you good folks — thank you!

I wish FoMVT could take credit for marking the trail heaves with spray paint. This was done by a trail user on his own. I have met him and he did volunteer with us once.

We are doing trail bump fixes now and looking forward to fixing as many as we can. https://twitter.com/mtvernonfriends/status/1451951265999691778?s=21
