You going to haul out the empties?
Beer cans are made of aluminum, some bike frames are made of aluminum. Also, people make bikes out of bamboo, how hard can it be? Make a big-ass fire and turn your empties into a new bike, and then ghost-ride it out.

ParticipantDon’t know about case 1, but I’d generally travel in the lane to avoid repeated crossings (but I’m aware there are other possible extenuating circumstances). My opinion on case 2 is that you’re going to have to cross Wiehle when someone has a green, so there’s a decent chance someone’s going to get inconvenienced. As expected, I wouldn’t expect traffic going straight on Wiehle to yield to me there, but FWIW I’m more willing to scoot out there when traffic is turning onto Wiehle from Sunset Hills. At some point that intersection will be redone (a bridge from what I hear).

ParticipantI took the CCT from Georgetown up to Fletcher’s Cove and then hopped on the towpath, so I can’t speak to the earliest section of the towpath. The section I covered was in good condition, with the occasional large puddle (water or mud), but a single bike could easily go around. A trailer or trailer-cycle might be stuck going through. The worst section is by the detour shortly before going under the beltway, where you’ll have to go through some deep, wet mulch (but it’s a bike dismount detour anyways). I did end up scoping the campsites out. #4 and #5 looked fine, and #1 was in use this morning, so presumably decent as well. I didn’t go further back, looked like a large muddy section torn up by vehicles, but certainly passable once you’re out there.
Mulch detour (going eastbound):

If anyone wants to recon the C&O from Georgetown to the Marsden Tract campground, and the campground in particular (i.e. how muddy it is, if there’s any dry wood), the Kidical world would appreciate it!
I’ll try to hit that part of the C&O tomorrow morning, but won’t be able to provide any info on the campground itself.

Don’t know. I checked the Arlington map, the DC map, and the Fairfax map. Only Alexandria and Arlington flag hills on their maps and they only include hills that are on designated bike routes or that have some type of bike infrastructure. Fairfax and Washington have opted not to include hill details.
These maps look busy enough as-is, I’m imagining a topo map overlaid (underlaid?) and it seems it would be nearly unintelligible. I haven’t seen the Alexandria map, but I’d think that if the bike infrastructure is distributed well enough (big if) one could get a sense of the general topography even if only the bike route hills and such are marked.

ParticipantI want to ride up to Point of Rocks this week, but I’m not sure how feasible that’ll be. I’ve taken a look at the NPS’s alerts regarding flooding, and I think I should be able to make it up to mile 42, the Monocacy Aqueduct, on the towpath and then the remaining six miles or so on the roads.
Anyone have any experience on the towpath since the storms/rain?

Looks like he hit 30mph a bit before Ashburn Village Blvd.

ParticipantThe perp wasn’t on my shortlist of suspects after my own Strava investigation
. Wonder if I simply missed it, or if the activity was private/he turned off flybys and law enforcement has a little more clout obtaining data. Presumably the latter.

Weird – I copied the link from the posts about Seminary and S Pickett. It works fine in those posts, but does not work here. I don’t know why, but suggest going clicking on the links in those posts.
Or just go via the Complete Streets homepage here: https://www.alexandriava.gov/CompleteStreets
Looks like the forum software displays the ellipsized link text (perhaps only for links of a certain length), so if you copy and paste that rather than the target of the link, you’ll presumably have problems.

There were a bunch of asshats out on the roads and trails today. Riding fancy carbon bikes and wearing black kits, passing people with impunity.
Good thing I grabbed my crabon bike out of the pile this morning to ride in.

ParticipantIn my fairly limited experience, it seems like the walk signal will come without the beg button during “business hours”, but if it’s late enough, e.g. 7pm, it seems that it won’t come on (and then I typically cross Fairfax without the signal when traffic on Glebe gets the green).

Do you have a planned route? I volunteered last year, but heard amazing stories of swag I missed out on, so am planning on trying to hit as many stops as possible this year instead!
Don’t know where your final destination is, but I’m starting from Arlington and my tentative plan is as follows (taking the opening times into account, and headed to Reston):
Arlington — Ballston (don’t know where exactly w/o Freshbikes) @ 6:30
Rosslyn — Gateway Park
Crystal City
Shirlington
Bikenetic/Falls Church
Vienna
Reston
HerndonTempted to try and work a DC one into there, but not sure how easy that would be. Won’t be getting into work early either way.

ParticipantBeing an Internet detective is oddly fun but also pretty disconcerting. Pursued some leads — looked at flybys, looked for suspicious slowdowns in the area, cross-referenced Facebooks and LinkedIns, looked at jersey listings on Ebay to compare colors with photos, checked out triathlon results. Way too easy to fall down the rabbit hole. It definitely makes me reconsider my social media presence.
