3/15/21 – Christmas Ornaments or Lights

Not uploading my pic to the thread promptly after my ride almost got me.

Here’s a holly tree festooned with Christmas lights in Elfreth’s Alley. As I said on Facebook, thanks drevil and JoM for all their hard work organizing and running this!

3/14/21 – Scientist (Name or Likeness)

I already used a statue of Ben Franklin for the lightning/kite (I don’t actually remember what exactly the prompt was) task, but I figured I’d use another statue for today’s challenge. Ben Franklin was a polymath so science was one of many pursuits for him. He experimented with electricity, inventing the lightning rod and also killing/cooking turkeys via electric shock (I’m not sure how he reconciled this with his vegetarianism). He also studied ocean currents in the Northern Atlantic, and ended up naming the Gulf Stream current. He also made contributions to:

    • Demographics
    • Meteorology
    • Thermodynamics

This is young Ben Franklin, just making his way down to Philadelphia from Boston.

I snapped this pic of a photoshoot in Rittenhouse Square. It’s not a traditional umbrella, but it’d protect you from the rain.

    3/11/21 – Face (using Pareidolia)

This is a questionable submission, but I’d argue this Amazon logo isn’t an actual face. Admittedly, it’s hard to say with something that’s as artificial and created as a logo/symbol.

The arrow below the word “Amazon” is evocative of a mouth, and the roundness of the “a” and “o” leads one to view them as eyes. And we all know that eyes plus mouth make a face, the nose be damned!

I busted out some new socks with some new-to-me shoes on this gorgeous day. I was even complimented on the socks by a kid in a cul-de-sac.

Ridge Supply socks are super basic, but I’m a sucker for them. Do I get a bonus point for the Bikenetic bidon?

3/10/21 – Cell Phone Store OR Wired Phone OR Pay Phone (read details for breakdown)

A local convenience store has two pay phones out front. However, I’m honestly not sure how convenient a pay phone is these days.

It’s wired and has a coin slot visible (near the top right), so this is a three pointer.

3/8/21 – Notable Woman (with her achievement)

Philly has the same female monument drought that kbikeva described in DC, and I even read a bit about a work (“If They Should Ask”) that addresses that dearth. I decided to go with Barbara Gittings, the “mother of the LGBT civil rights movement”. She was the editor of The Ladder, a national lesbian magazine, protested the federal government’s employment ban on gays in front of Independence Hall, and helped get homosexuality dropped from the DSM.

It’s crazy how discriminatory things were not that long ago (and I know I’m not exposed to much given the circumstances of my birth), but Barbara Gittings definitely made things better during her lifetime.

    3/7/21 – Cookie Selfie

Boomer’s link didn’t turn up any close-by Girl Scout sellers today, nor did I encounter any during my ride. I swung by the grocery store to get some cheap but disturbingly good, artificially flavored lemon snaps.

    3/6/21 – Element Name

I managed to snag six legitimate elements in less than five miles. I was going to choose by lowest atomic number, which would’ve been the Helium Comedy Club. But, if drevil is allowing the element name within other words (and even if not), I’m going to go with this:

I came for the aluminum, but I’m staying for the insulating and leaded glass as well. For those curious, I was not riding an aluminum bike (#steelisreal). Larger image here.

I’d consider this group a fine assemblage of monsters of the 1A type — they’re weird drop shapes and have peculiar numbers of eyes and an assortment of teeth. Some certainly seem friendlier than others.

It looks like big bags, cut-offs, layers, and cool hair are classics. There’s a bunch of newer messenger and other bike culture photos in this photographer’s Instagram, demoncatslookbook.
