Tough call with needing to get somewhere (but you ended up being delayed by the broken bike anyway.) I believe a lot of motorists get off scot-free when we don’t call the police in instances like this. “SMIDSY; let my insurance take care of it. I’ll have forgotten all about it by the time I get home.”

Although who knows if the police would even ticket the driver?

I’ll save someone the trip to Google: “Sorry mate I didn’t see you”

I’ve taken the EFC pedestrian bridge tour a few times now, and it’s just fine. Crossing Washington Blvd. from W. Jefferson st. is easy in the morning – Eastbound cross traffic is minimal and it’s usually bumper-to-bumper Westbound, so getting across the street and continuing on your merry way is really not a problem. In the evening, it’s a simple matter to turn left from N. Westmoreland onto Washington Blvd. with the light and head on up to W. Jefferson.

Lee Highway/N Washington St according to Google Maps, not Washington Blvd

Darby and a certain lumberjack would be a match made in heaven.

I didn’t realize how big Darby was until I saw him in person. Comparing dogs to rcannon100 isn’t good for judging sizes. I think the lumberjack is appropriately sized.

Thanks but that one’s too far afield from my work route.

IMO, in an ideal world, coffee isn’t obtained from somewhere along your shortest commute. It’s a lot better if you go out to Leesburg or somewhere similar.

Are there any regulars who currently hit the Shirlington gathering, but routinely arrive between 6:30 and 7:00?

    I don’t believe so.

(BTW — where exactly is the Crystal City Coffee Club meeting point on Tuesdays? The Calendar entry only says: “Bring your coffee or buy it from nearby. Winter location is at Cosi nearby.” Nearby to what??)

Crystal City Water Park, a little north on Crystal Dr from the Cosi.

I love it. The ridiculous $5000 super-niche bikes of today inspire the more reasonable bikes of tomorrow. And really, unless you live in a flat world, riding a fixie is finding the middle ground between “my knees are going to explode” downhill and “I literally can not advance this bicycle any further” uphill. Having a bit of boost means you can ride a taller gear without dying on the uphills.

If advances in ebikes get more people riding fixed, it’s a net gain for humanity

My annoyance with it lies more in the pseudo-advertising-copy. I really have my doubts that it’s actually a fixed gear, although I was unable to confirm or reject this suspicion looking at the article (only hint is that the article isn’t included in the “Fixies” category). I get that language changes, but using “fixie” or “fixed gear” to describe the aesthetics of something when it’s functionally very different still annoys me. One of the other bikes linked to in this article is described as a “stunningly minimalistic e-fixie” that has “fixie style” handlebars, but “the charge is obtained through an energy recovery sytsem, when going downhill or freewheeling”.

From Banneker Park, south to Columbia gets you across Lee Highway at a traffic light and you don’t have to ride on Lee Highway.

Yeah, trying to cross Lee Highway on Jefferson (with no light) sucks, it always feels like I’m waiting around for a couple minutes for a 10 second break in traffic.

I’ve been using a pair of Compass Barlow Pass (38mm slicks), on both pavement and gravel. They’re ~*~supple~*~ and fast and comfortable. hozn is a big fan of them as well. I think they were perfect for something like Croatan. If you’re dealing with chunkier gravel, or lots of cornering (particularly at speed), having no knobs on the sides/edges sucks. I think I’ll be at the Loudoun 1725 ride (although as a “volunteer”), so hopefully I’ll see you there! Also, I currently have two pairs of these, 700c, unmounted, so if you want to test them before, just let me know.

Yeah, I brought her home on the 2nd. I was drooling over the Rodeolabs bikes I saw in there. They look really sweet. Clem, is faster than I can make her go at the moment. The 38mm tires are a bit wide, but they add some nice cushion when I took her out on the Towpath recently. Definitely faster than my old Specialized Stumpjumper HT from’95. What are you riding?

Orange Santa Cruz Stigmata, shown with some plush 38mm tires too:

It’s been a sweet bike for me. I threw some MXPs on one wheelset for my first cross season last fall, have done a handful of road races and crits with skinny tires on a different wheelset, and some gravel races here and there. This is making me think I really need to sell some bikes soon.

Cool! Yeah, There were, surprisingly, a couple of orange bikes in there at the same time when I picked up my bike. Working with Pete to get her up and ready was great. Loved working with him and they are now my go to shop.

Assuming you were there in the past couple days, one of those bikes was mine! It looks good (and fast).
