I’d like to commission a pool noodle with custom Freezing Saddles artwork (black sharpie on foam should work) by LeprosyStudyGroup.

18th Street in Adams Morgan is fine, though.
It can be fun if you’re willing to ride more aggressively, but 18th in Adams Morgan always feels like a clusterfuck to me. I’d imagine it being pretty busy with rideshare drop-offs and pick-ups most evenings or later.

Wow! there’s a lot to take in for the newbie.
While it seems there are a lot of variables TBD, What are the basics? Is there an FAQ somewhere?
Some things I’d like to know:
How does Strava fit in/do you need their summit service? Can kids participate?
What kind of sensors are necessary? Thanks!
The top stickied thread in this forum should have some basic info — but for last year. Some things might change though, but the basic idea will remain the same. Answers to some of your questions:
* Strava is required, that’s how the rides are tracked
* Premium version is not required
* Not sure about a minimum age (for FS or Strava)
* Just a smartphone with GPS is sufficient, you can install the Strava app there. Of course you can always use a dedicated bike computer with GPS (and pair other sensors, but they are not necessary)josh
ParticipantI’ll take it. Will PM for deets

So this is the year we’ve been waiting for. Yes, as pointed out several years ago, 2020 is the leap year that creates a question about the end date for Freezing Saddles.
Freezing Saddles has always ended on the last full day of winter, which has been March 19 for every year so far. In 2016 that made FS an extra day long (79 days rather than 78), because February had 29 days
Winter ends and spring begins at 11:49 PM EDT on March 19, 2020, which makes March 18 the last full day of winter.
Options include:- Keep FS 78 days long, retain the “last full day of winter” guideline, and end at midnight on March 18
- End at the exact end of winter: 11:49 pm on March 19 (the FSLNHPP would have to start 11 minutes earlier I suppose)
- End at midnight on Thursday, March 19, slopping over slightly into spring, making FS 79 days long as it was in 2016, retaining the traditional end date of March 19
(BTW – this issue will not arise again in most of our lifetimes. Looking forward, spring starts on March 20 EDT for several decades)
Not a hard question IMO — go with the “last day of winter”, and end at midnight on March 19th (option #3). 11 minutes of spring isn’t going to bother anyone.

I think I’m late to the party… is it too late to sign up? If not, where is the sign-up form?
Have no fear, you’re too early to sign up!

Did you use them tubeless?
Yup, never with tubes. Was going to link you to this thread, but then realized you started it
. I’ve also enjoyed the G-One all-arounds (38mm) for a little more grip cornering, but still not bad on pavement.
There’s also a lot on this thread (not sure if you’ve posted on it).
(sorry for continuing the thread hijacking)

So these are the WTB Riddlers. They were what Bill recommended. Or actually maybe Brian first… But they’re from Contes. And Bill is on vacation
I ordered another of the same one, since overall they ride well. But I am interested in changing them out, since I have had some leakage issues as well.
Not much in the way of tread, but I like Rene Herse tires (formerly Compass). I’ve used the standard casing Barlow Passes (38mm width) and they’ve been great. hozn is a fan as well.

What’s people’s plans for crank and cassette sizes? My gravel bike currently has a 42 crank with a 12-36 10 speed cassette. It looks like the 65 mile route has about a 1,000 foot climb over 5 miles and then a 1,800 ish climb over 4-5 miles. It looks like an 11-42 is available for the cassette and I could go as low a 34T up front.
38×17? 😮
But yeah I’d agree with Casey that a 1:1 ratio should be good for paved/gravel climbs that aren’t stupid steep if you’re not carrying stuff. I used a 34×11-42 for the Dirt Farm Hill Climb and it was nice for that, but it’d be way too spinny for the flats and descents.

ParticipantI’d think it’d be helpful to know what direction each party was (initially) traveling in. Who was going east, who was going west?

ParticipantI like Subby’s idea he tossed out earlier this year — individual leaderboard is based solely on miles ridden (no cap), team leaderboard is based solely on days ridden (at least 1 mile). I’m indifferent to the size of teams, but I like local teams (although they’re more of a pain to set up). Alternatively, we could select captains from a volunteer pool, and have them draft players (this is cycling, drafting is important right?).
