“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Martin Luther King Jr. delivered this famous line in a sermon called “Loving Your Enemies,” at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, on November 17, 1957

Found at Sligo Creek Elementary School, seems like there are lots of stories about princesses, but none of them tell you that the cone-shaped hat that they wear is called a henin, which became popular in the late middle ages and continues to remain popular today!

In 1922, Adele H. Stamp, educator and community leader, was offered a one-year contract as the Dean of Women at the University of Maryland. At the end of that year, her contract was renewed, even though she had promised to take a position with the Red Cross. By the end of two years, she knew that she wanted this to be her life’s work. For the next 38 years until her retirement in 1960, she served as the University’s Dean of Women.

While she was there, enrollment of female students increased from 93 in 1922 to approximately 4,000 in 1960.

Stamp Student Union is now the Student Union building which is considered the main hub of campus, was renamed after her in 1983.

Greenbelt was built as a New Deal project as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Executive Order Establishing the United States Resettlement Administration (RA/RRA).

The Greenbelt Community Center was built in 1937 and was formerly the first school in Greenbelt. Architects Wadsworth and Ellington employed Streamlined Moderne/Art Deco features such as glass block, angular fluted buttresses, curving corners, and stylized bas reliefs on the exterior. The WPA-funded limestone bas relief panels by sculptor Lenore Thomas feature scenes representing the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, such as We the People over the doorway on the main elevation facing Crescent Road. Five more panels below the windows between the buttresses depict To Form a More Perfect Union, Establish Justice, Insure Domestic Tranquility, Provide for the Common Defense, and Promote the General Welfare.

Columbia Records released the first long-playing microgroove record, spinning at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute and holding about 23 minutes each side in June 1948. The 12-inch became the standard format for commercial recordings, ushering in a new musical unit of consumption — the album.

Also in March 1949, 7-inch records were introduced by RCA Victor. This smaller format was more compact and had a shorter running time. The new 45 rpm held two songs, one on each side. For more info https://www.grunge.com/818876/the-origin-of-the-7-inch-record/

Where is the list of items to find? How did you know that it’s the 70’s for today? The only way that I knew is that I had to wait for someone to post a picture. I don’t see it in this thread.

The list was posted to this thread a few days ago: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?20998-Pointless-Prize-2023-Photo-Scavenger-Hunt&p=221748#post221748

So far the Photo Scavengers are on FIRE!

Now for Week 2 of the Photo Scavenger Hunt: Decades!

Take a photo each day to represent a decade, as follows:
    1/7/23 Saturday ’90s
    1/8/23 Sunday ’70s
    1/9/23 Monday ’60s
    1/10/23 Tuesday ’50s
    1/11/23 Wednesday ’40s
    1/12/23 Thursday ’30s
    1/13/23 Friday ’20s

(Yes, we know ’80s is missing…)
Can you take an iconic shot, so that it’s clear to anyone who sees it which decade you’re targeting? That’s awesome! Do you need a little explanation? That’s okay, too.

Great start, everyone! Love seeing the creativity!
