ParticipantI’ve almost been hit here for the same reason – driver ran the red light but I saw he wasn’t stopping and luckily did not enter the crosswalk.
Hope the cyclist is ok.jnva

After a great FCCII with a record turn out, and JimK not seeing me again
I finally stopped to meet the work-out man on the W&OD next to Railroad Ave. I am sure you have all spotted him “working out”, and “Lady Watching” next to his 86′ Monte Carlo. Turns out his name is JJ, a 70 yr. old ex-boxer/trainer. Lots of colorful stories, some questionable, but still a nice guy. It just felt wrong passing him every day and not saying “Hi”. I look forward to hearing him yell “Dickie” from now on!
Ha ha, yeah I’ve been wondering what his story was! I was thinking it might have been boxing. Sometimes there is a lady in the car. It’s one of the fun parts of commuting on a bike. That and dogsled guy, which I haven’t seen lately.

Is it one of the forum folks that rides a red and black (Specialized, I think) e-bike? I’ve seen that one out a few times, and think it’s pretty sharp.
Not me, but I have seen him many times in the afternoon near the 495 overpass on the W&OD. It is a nice looking bike.

While we’re on the subject, has anyone ever run into this guy around the city? I’m fascinated by his over-built monster of a bike, but horrified by his riding (which provides giant flashing examples of what people fear ebikers will act like). Thankfully I don’t think you can make a bike like that without access to a machine shop.
Ha ha, yes I’ve met him. He’s a really nice guy and not the typical ebiker. He knows more about ebikes, and bikes in general than most.

No. I hope that they are removed entirely, which they should be. They haven’t been there for 15+ years; there’s no need for them now–particularly in light of the fact that trail usage is going up. FHWA guidance discourages the use of bollards as a default option. Long before we install bollards other solutions need to be tried, such as signage, paint treatments or other design changes. We don’t put telephone poles in the middle of the street; we should not put posts in the middle of the trail. Period.
(FHWA guidance is here: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/recreational_trails/guidance/accessibility_guidance/bollards_access.cfm)The bollard on the side of whole foods was new, the one on the other side has been there as long as I can remember…

Is this yours? Awesome!

I don’t see me ever wanting one but I could definitely see some folks finding them useful. Having said that, I don’t really see it as a way to get people out of cars the way that some of you do, though I can see why you would think that. Folding bikes I could definitely see getting people out of cars and away from four wheeled transportation; eBikes I just can’t see having a serious impact. A lot of that has to do with price.
I went from bike commuting twice a week to 5 days a week because of the ebike. I never get stuck in traffic, so I really don’t care if people honk at me, what I don’t understand is why the hate from other cyclists? I consider myself one of you! Don’t hate on me!

ParticipantLol. I would have liked to see the watt hours used by his battery. My hunch is that it’s nearly depleted, and that he hauled the bike home in his SUV that he parked at the summit!

ParticipantThat doesn’t explain why this put there, then days later haphazardly removed.

To those that think this way, they should perhaps consider that the race is only in their mind: this mythical snickers-bar-eating guy (really?) doesn’t actually care that he blew by you on the climb out of Rosslyn.
Well said!
Actually though I do care. I know how hard it is to climb up that hill and I totally respect those that can do it on pedal power. By the way, it’s really impossible to eat a candy bar, use the throttle and handle a bike going 20+ mph uphill in traffic!
