IME Thomson will take care of you well if you contact them directly. I cracked a faceplate and got two new ones for free.

if you’re willing to do a wall mount, I’ve got one of these:

    Cycloc

and can’t be happier with it – looks great and works great.

I bought two originally, so I’ve got an extra one (dusty, but unused) in my attic. I’d be willing to part with it for much cheaper than retail.

Just a heads up that Spokes ETC is having their annual tent sale at their Belle View store on Saturday & Sunday (Dec. 6 & 7).

Full list of deals is TBD, but a little birdy told me that ALL summer clothing is on sale for a flat $10 a piece, or less. Had your eye on that $80 jersey? BAM! $10. Had your eye on those nice $120 bibs? BAM! $10.

    List-o-deals!!!

If I was a man made of expendable income, that Specialized Turbo would be at the top of my list. However, for the commuting set that frequents this forum, of note would be the Specialized Secteur Discs, the Trek Crossrip & Boone, and maybe the 7.4FX disc. The standout deal of the sale are going to be the Salsa Horsetheifs.

Couple little tricks that can help:

loosen the brake cable completely so that you can pull the brake lever all the way to the bar, then take a rubber band and wrap it around the brake lever and the drops of the handlebar. You’ve now freed up one more hand to fiddle with the broken cable. also, shift the shifter into the smallest cog, or innermost chain ring (depending on which model Tiagra you’ve got, it’s either the thumb button on the inside of the hood, or the small paddle shift lever). this will line up the cable end with the cable access port. using a small pick-like tool makes things easier (most shop mechanics will take a section of a spoke and grind it down until its sharp and use that to finagle out a broken cable end).

as of ~0600 there was an open fire hydrant, spraying water across Jefferson just after the Smithsonian Castle. A quick detour onto the sidewalk should be enough to get around without getting soaked. There’s construction on the Mall, so not sure if this is related.

I believe regular shop hours: 10-6 Sat, 10-5 Sun, but they might have extended hours.

Some of the bike deals are crazy good – I’ve seen bikes at past tent sales @ 50% off retail.

A Tandem! After taking a nice tandem ride with my dear daughter this summer we have been looking for a cheap used tandem for us to putter around on. I found an early 1980s (?) Gottfried tandem on craig’s list. Not a terribly desirable or high tech light weight bike but it looked to be low miles, all there and the price was less than its rear hub alone. the bike has 700c wheels and the rear has a nice near new Phil Woods tandem hub with a Mavic wheel and 3rd (drum) brake.
Stripped it to bare frame and ultrasonic cleaned all the greasy parts. All the grease and oil was dried hard but there was little wear on anything. Looks like the bike originally came with center or side pull brakes that were replaced with add on cantilever brakes. The brakes would twist out of alignment when pulled hard so I made 2 yokes from some scrap aluminum to cure that. We finished it just in time for wet weather which my Dear Daughter seems to be too smart to want to ride in.

your garage = so much want

February: the only month of the year when you’re frantically hitting F5 on the Trail Conditions thread before leaving for work, all 28 days.

February: the only month when trying to decide what to wear is easier. Just put everything on.

February is so bad, even my bike doesn’t want to commute to work.

February is so bad, 25mph headwinds out of the north is an “easy” day.
