Hey there and welcome to the forum!
Wow, that is an impressive round-trip commute you’ve got there, esp with bad knees. Be sure to ramp up slowly else you will burn out or injure yourself. If possible, try to make at least one of the forum’s happy hours (they will start up again probably next month now that warm weather is here) so you will be able to recognize folks on the trail.
Feel free to post pics of yourself and/or your bike!
Not to mention the many many coffee clubs…

’cause I’m sure our friends at Arlnow really want to know so they can trash talk it some more.
Right now they are tossing about “Another million dollar buss stop” so maybe admitting that it cost something like $20K (I hope…) wouldn’t be all bad? Nevermind, don’t feed the trolls…
Does anyone want to admit to being the noble defender of cycling, “Cyclist” on ArlNow? I’m impressed with your fortitude, I gave up long ago (also a tip of the helmet to “Crikey” on WaPo).

ParticipantWelcome! There are plenty of WB commuters (Rolo & Hozn come to mind) and many of of us will head out that way for the coffee clubs. Those are a great way to put faces to names.

I had a great time seeing folks in person this morning! Definitely worth getting up 2 HOURS EARLY for this. I also found out that I know GB’s mother (I even danced with her at a square dance once! True story!).
…about 28 years ago…. hmmmm

5:15am? hahahaha. I can barely get around a CX course in daylight, I’d require a MTB to even attempt LFP methinks.
Awww, from Mclean you could probably leave at 5:30 and LFP is pretty easy unless we go down by the lake- absolutely nothing in common with a CX course though.

Nice to meet you dkel and Lena. Loved seeing eminva’s nice “new” bike, as well as the randoguy’s VO and that sweet Gunnar out there too! Thanks to GB and GuyContinental for the pulls back to Arlington as well – always a pleasure riding with polite and considerate trail users! Great turn out with dcv and hozn there as well.
Curiously, my body clock woke me up 5 mins before my alarm was set, so I guess my brain knew I wanted to attend.
Indeed, it *was* polite and considerate to send GB ahead to probe the icy sections…
Great to see everyone!

Unfortunately I was already at work by 6:30 this morning so a miss for me but I will certainly put it on my radar for the future. Liz, is this going to remain a weekly thing? So now we have HDCC, VCC, and FCC we just need 2 more to complete the set!
Dickie, this is really a ruse to get you, DCV and vvill out to LFP CX with Hozn when it warms up. 5:15am departure from Courthouse, 6:15 at Tamarack Park, back to coffee (muddy and content) by ~7:30.

I’m going to miss FCC this week so maybe if I can motivate myself to get up early to ride in the opposite direction of where I’m supposed to go, I could make it for a bit. I enjoy their coffee a lot.
Motivate! Ride back in the other direction with GB and I… We’ll be there at 7ish.

ParticipantThis thread is unhealthy for my wallet… I have two high functioning, high spec (XO/XTR) 26″ mountain bikes (a SS and FS) and have no real reason to replace either but I WANT to build a new 650B bike, maybe just for the sake of new-to-me-ness…

Was she rocking her new shiny, Hozen-built wheels?

Also, to keep in mind: if you’re headed west on the W&OD coming up to the Virginia Lane crossing and you see a cyclist coming down the road, it’s probably a good idea to physically signal your intended behavior before you reach the crossing.
Esp. if there’s no car traffic. Regardless of signage, I’m assuming most of us aren’t planning to come to a stop (or at least a full stop) at the crossing. The other cyclist is probably assuming the same thing. If you’re planning on turning right on the hill, signal it and if you’re planning to go straight, point forward (or something obvious).
Or stop, but then you’ll surprise the heck out of the other cyclist and they probably don’t need surprises when they are scanning for multiple vehicles/pedestrians and calculating their own targeting solution… plus, it’s hard for them to make that left onto the trail if there’s another bike stopped there.
Technically, the same applies to signaling to car drivers, but they probably won’t understand

A variation of this is to make sure that those riding WITH you share the same intention- as can be seen from this thread, there are the “no trail, no how” and the “why the hell would I use the road when there’s a trail” coalitions. As a member of the latter, twice I’ve collided with a member of the former on my left who assumed that I’d swing hard right at the stop sign. I now discuss intentions before getting to VA Ln…

I ride in from Rockville which, of course, isn’t quite as close to the river. I’m curious though why you’d take the C&O and not just River Rd to either Persimmon Tree or Seven Locks and then down to MacArthur from which you can access the CCT in a few places and avoid the dirt and mud.
Clearly because showing up at work everyday with a mud-shell after 20 miles(?) of gravel grinding is awesome! (Rules 9 and 5 apply)
That said, Sethpo has a point, particularly in winter.

Dude already has 4MATIC AWD. maybe he needs some Pirelli Winter Carving Edge tires?
Ride down that thing sometime (CX tires would be a good idea)- He’d need a Rubicon to get out. Super steep.

Bikes are not the problem on this road.
The design sucks, cars are too aggressive but bikes are absolutely PART of the problem. I’d rather there be no trail at all (just a pedestrian sidewalk) and a bike lane on each side to reduce the ambiguity.
