There’s a bike store there that used to carry some really nice Dutch bikes. Now they seem to focus more on Linus which are fine Dutch-like bicycles also.

Not directly bicycling related but it looks like there’s a new curb extension being built at the I-66 off-ramp with Lee Highway in Arlington.

There’s a sidewalk there that intersects with the off-ramp and cars often come from the highway at high speed.

I couldn’t find any reference to this project on the County site but it’s pretty cool.

I’m as liberal as it gets and I’m very happy with the County’s direction in general (road narrowing, sidewalks, even some bicycle paths…) but personally I find this a waste of money.

Never mind that the artists are Dutch.

Chris, this is awesome. Is there a flyer (PDF) perhaps? Would like to handout a flyer or two to bicyclists that I know from my daughter’s pre-K.

A very appropriate post for national coffee day.

I stand by the assertion that this here is simply “not a big deal”. I’ve ridden that road a number of times; the lanes have plenty of room and taking a moment to slow down and check behind before going around the truck is no more dangerous than any other maneuver on the street. If someone isn’t confident enough to do that safely, they probably shouldn’t be on the road by themselves .

I don’t mean to make the discussion too personal, but your comment about your son is exactly why a protected bicycle lane network is so valuable. If we allow cars to temporarily park in bicycle lanes it means we can never trust those bicycles lanes to be 100% available for children and other less confident bicyclists, therefore bringing down the appeal of the whole network.

I haven’t bicycled there but from the photo that seems like an excellent spot for a physically separate bike lane. That would prevent this from happening for good.

Please report this to the non-emergency number in Arlington, or via twitter @arlingtonvapd. I’ve been trying to get enforcement of the 3-foot rule there, and more voices asking for it would help.

I don’t mind calling them — but last time I did that (for an near-miss on that same intersection) they told me they only will take note of it if I have a license plate to report…

I recommend merging into the northbound vehicle traffic ahead of the intersection, and then taking the center of the lane until you pass the last parked car. That way you won’t lure impatient drivers into attempting dangerous passes. If anyone honks, blame the traffic engineers.

I know, I know, that would be the safest. But I feel it’s unfair — because I’m not fast by any means. I know that two cars can safely cross the intersection before the point that I need to merge into traffic. If I merge into the northbound lane before crossing that means everybody will have to wait for me.

Personally, I would like to see the bike lane on the northside extended to the crossing so no merging of bicycles and cars is needed at all. It would require eliminating three parking spaces on the street.

Was a little scary… a car only left 2 inches of space between us when passing me at the Quincy/Washington crossing, going north.

Often I can bicycle in the parking spaces there but now they were in use, by cars and a big pile of garden waste.

This is a great map. I looked up the routes I usually bicycle and agree with the color coding on the routes that I know.

The map makes it clear that there are many good connections through the County.

Let’s turn some more of the yellow and orange into blue over the next years ;)

Don’t have a strong opinion on whether or not Arlington “deserves” a Gold status, but I will say that D.C. is doing awesome. Compared with just two years ago bicycle facilities have greatly improved, including protected bikelanes on Pennsylvania, near Union Station etc. So far, we have virtually none in Arlington where there are ton of places they could easily be built. Clarendon, Wilson, Quincy are all great candidates for protected lanes. Hopefully Arlington will catch up to DC!

I have to report precipitation of the cucurbitaceae variety.

On Custis near the intersection with N Stafford there are several broken pumpkins on the trail. It seems like they were thrown from the Washington Lee parking deck.

Some are very near the path — would have been quite dangerous for anyone on the trail when they were thrown down.

Completely agree with you. It will be weeks possibly a couple months before there is a no-turn-on-red sign. In the interim, we have a temporary problem: bikes and peds should be going with the LPI, but drivers are generally looking left. The sign would be a temporary solution for the temporary problem: to remind drivers to look right before turning.

Fair enough. Then it makes sense.
