Me: about to pass through an intersection while biking down Quincy on my way to the library
You: a driver who doesn’t believe in traffic signals

But at least I finally caught some excitement on my helmet camera: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH7IhnMgAEU

Wow! I bicycle through that intersection very often and two weeks ago the exact same thing happened — a car on Washington totally ignoring the red light, almost hitting me when the light turned green for us. I was coming from the same direction as the car that got hit [from the library towards Washington-Lee].

Makes me pretty nervous about using that intersection again, especially since the bike lane is interrupted in a strange way when driving next to Washington-Lee. I suppose it is to make room for the car turn-lane but it makes for a dangerous bike ride since you’re forced into accelerating traffic all of a sudden.

BTW, you may have been able to avoid that stretch of bike lane altogether. I often come up the hill on 15th, then take Veitch to Key to get around Courthouse/Clarendon. I find those bike lanes to be the worst in my travels in terms of joggers in the bike lane…

I second that — Key Boulevard is much more pleasant than the bike lanes on Wilson/Clarendon. Traffic is slower and much less crowded.

One thought to put in the mix: take a look at bikes with a hub dynamo. They are great to give you excellent light without the need for battery. Especially useful if you are commuting in any type of traffic.

It’s difficult to put a hub dynamo on an existing bike. I mean it’s possible but it’s not the type of thing that you can easily upgrade your bike with.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but quick question on BikeGlow lights — PotomacCyclist you mention that your BikeGlow beeps when it’s on. I just received one and my is also beeping. Is this normal? Does it get bothersome?

I often run on the Custis trail around Ballston with a running stroller. Virtually all bicyclists passing us call their passes, which makes me happy. Thanks bicyclists!

Even nicer when they ring their bell since my 1,5 year old really likes the sound of that :)

    I’d vote for

    bock feets

(though the “o” should be pronounced like “a” in “bath”)

She gave birth to three children. So, probably not.

Today they were painting the bike lane on Wilson, west bound before the crossing with Veitch.

I think those recommending military/custis are approaching this from more of an “experienced cyclists” perspective. The nice thing about the route the OP linked is that nearly the entirety of the climbing for the whole route is 41st st (which is easy enough to walk), and there is very little on-street riding. Military does have a bike lane for most of its length, but its also a fairly well-used road by motorists so you’ll have traffic turning on and off the whole way. That whole route is also very hilly.

I would agree. I’m more of a recreational bicyclist and I would not voluntarily take Military Rd. if I could avoid it, certainly on weekdays.

The good news is that not much will be left of any bollards on the road after your fellow trail user has walked over it.

Denmark is a smart country :)

    I like this quote:

“The plan has received widespread support in a country whose left- and right-leaning lawmakers both regularly bike to work (albeit on slightly different models of bicycle). “

    That is very cool!

I like it how the Dutch word “bakfiets” seems to become part of American vocabulary.
