That is awesome news. Thank you, everybody in the BAC and beyond who made this happen.

That’s awful. I’m glad you are (physically) okay. Did you file a police report?

If you ride a modern road bike there are tons of other 2-wheeled bikes that are safer choices. Bikes that go slower and have more forgiving geometry are much less likely to crash. I have a Dutch bike and boy you’d really have to do something dumb to crash that bike. It tops out at 13mph and practically steers itself. If you add weight it gets even more serene in its handling. Plus the wider tires don’t tend to get stuck in cracks or slide on gravel. I’ve hit patches of ice that would have put me over the handlebars on my cross bike, but the Dutch bike just recovers more quickly.

Yeah, was going to say the same thing. I haven’t fallen of my (Dutch) bike ever, except one time when I was going over black ice 15 years ago.

For me answers to these 3 questions are the most telling.

    1) Do you ride a bike? If so, tell us about your riding.
    6) Under what circumstances, if any, would you support removing parking to install bike infrastructure?
    7) Do you support “road diets” as Arlington has done in the past on Shirlington Drive and is installing on Wilson Blvd this summer which remove travel lanes on streets to provide accommodations for other modes of travel like bicycles?

Outside of your price range, but the Dutch have a decent selection of bikes for tall people. This (beautiful) bike comes in a 67 cm framesize which might work for you.

That’s awful, and that interaction today seems creepy enough to tell the police about. The Arlington police non-emergency number is (703) 741-3035. I would really urge your friend to call and get this recorded.

Road diet and bigger sidewalks on 13th Street in Clarendon (4 car lanes will now be 2 car lanes).

This is a nice little shortcut to avoid the craziness that is Wilson/Clarendon Blvd.

Without some infrastructure many people will not ride at all. Including me.

I bike to work because I have infrastructure that makes me feel comfortable enough to do so. The bike lanes are of varying quality on S. Eads Street (from fully protected to just being a narrow margin outside the auto lanes) but they do give a space to ride apart from the delivery trucks, buses and impatient commuters. Without them I would not use that street – ever. While that might make gung- ho elitists happy, it would mean fewer cyclists overall.

This, exactly this (except I ride on Quincy and not S. Eads). Infrastructure is key for a safe and relaxed commute. The bikelanes on Quincy aren’t great but they’re way better than nothing.

This is a good thing though, yes?

Pepper spray suggested by others doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Frankly, the guy seemed crazy, with spittle flying from his mouth while he screamed, and it has occurred to me that he might reappear one morning armed. Most cyclists have lights that time of morning, so it’s a bit of a concern for all. Hopefully he was just having a bad day and won’t repeat.

I’m sorry that this happened to you. I run on Custis around that time, I was probably 15 minutes away from Custis/Key yesterday morning.

Don’t let this incident get to you.
