ParticipantFor those of you using the forum regularly, feel free to post intros and ride ideas here as well as on the Strava club.
As for me, I’m Jeff. I ride mostly out of Greenbelt and College Park MD. I do a couple regularly scheduled rides (weather permitting) with Proteus Velo Club. On Sunday mornings at 930, I usually do a mountain bike ride (about 8 miles, one hour-ish) at Fairland, like this: https://www.strava.com/activities/6430083286 If it looks like the snow is going to hold off until afternoon, I’ll probably go ahead with this ride tomorrow. Let me know if you want more info if you’d like to join.
On Monday, we usually do lunch laps in Greenbelt Park, like this: https://www.strava.com/activities/6407685422
However, this Monday MLK day instead of laps, I’m planning to do a 11am bike trail recon/trail clearing ride from Proteus down the trolley trail toward Bladensburg and back along the Anacostia River Trail System. Probably about 20 miles RT, but the going could be slow if we stop along the way and shovel out some of the trouble spots that always get gnarly after a snowfall. Expecting to be out in the cold maybe 2 hours-ish. Hoping the bike shop will open the coffee bar at 11 for us for pre-ride caffeinated beverages. More info here: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?19010-MLK-Day-Snow-Clearing-Ride-on-the-ARTS Let me know if you’re coming!
That’s all I’ve got coming up, I’ll post other ride ideas as we get going, here and on the Strava club. All of my rides are open to all BAFS teams — more fun for all!
PS. Oh cool, another tippy picture!

ParticipantNot a dumb question. I can’t figure it out either. I think I’m on team 4 from the happy hour breakout if I remember correctly. But no contact from captain yet and no general listing yet. Jeff

ParticipantHi — I’ll be getting my morning caffeine at the bike shop starting at about 10am with ride to follow about 10:30 probably. Ample parking, easy ride from Greenbelt Metro. Outdoor seating for coffee although I can open up for restroom. Also OK to bring extra warm clothes and leave at shop. For the ride, I was thinking of Anacostia tributary bike trails, maybe 10-20 miles depending on how I feel. Return to shop by around noon probably. There is also good road riding in the farms nearby if anyone wants to go fast spin.

ParticipantThanks all for joining the team promptly — we’re currently in 3rd place! https://freezingsaddles.org/ Feel free to edit the team name and pics — we’re all admins.
I’m tentatively planning to do a one-hour medium pace mountain bike ride at Fairland tomorrow early tomorrow before it thaws — 8am. Pretty good drainage this week plus we’ll get a hard freeze tonight so 8-9am should be good conditions. Two other guys from the bike shop might join (all very scrupulous social distancers). We meet behind the Gardens Ice house on the Prince George’s side. No drop — if the fast guys want to go ahead that’s fine, I’m happy to guide at the back. Coffee at Proteus (outside) following. Here’s a typical: https://www.strava.com/activities/4458857295
Sundays I usually go over to the shop at about 10am for coffee and then do an easy ride on the Anacostia trails for an hour or so, returning to shop before noon. If any body wants to meet up let me know. If the weather’s warm there are good outdoor lunch and drink spots along the bike trails.

Greenbelt, Maryland, was born in the 1930s. We are one of three “green belt” towns planned to create employment and provide housing during the Great Depression. The town design was more utopian than traditional, with sweeping sidewalks and pedestrian underpasses leading from houses to the community core.
During World War II, the town expanded to provide housing for defense workers; in the 1950s, the federal government sold the whole town to its residents, who continue to own the homes as a cooperative. The landscaping has now matured into a tremendous canopy of trees, and much of the original green belt surrounding the historic town center has been set aside from development as a forest preserve.
After the war, Greenbelt’s historic district — circled in red in the map below — was enveloped by a car-oriented development pattern. By the 1960s and 1970s, the town had been carved into pieces by wide highways and stroads. We gradually incorporated several large pods of apartment and condo complexes (blue circles), three major office parks (green), two large shopping centers (orange), and two major subdivisions of single-family homes and townhouses (purple).

The Federal Gov has shut down part of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. The dirt/gravel/broken road portion that circumvents the Mayfair neighborhood now has big concrete roadblocks up that say “No Trespassing”. I guess this wasn’t really part of the trail since the Mayfair neighborhood does have protected bike lanes through most of it.
Anyone know why? Never even realized this was federal land.
No idea. I just went around like usual — there’s nobody back there and the gate on the other end was open. it’s annoying to have to dismount though.
