Well, yes, but it makes me think of the Order of the Turtles. Not familiar with them? Look here:

Works for all kinds of signals!

    Surely that rates a groan!
But what is worse, is that when I read Harry’s post, I immediately thought of other signals!

This morning, while making a left turn off the W&OD, a cyclist behind me called out that he could barely see my arm signal due to my bright red tail light.
    Some thoughts:
    * I hadn’t realized it before, but my tail light is angled slightly up. It might have interfered with the other rider’s vision. I’ll have to angle it down.
    * I should get reflective wrist bands so my signals are easier to see. The trail was unlit at that point.
    * My tail light has two flash settings and two steady settings. I was using the higher of the steady settings. I wonder if the lower setting would be better.

Last year a tool bag and pump were stolen from my bike in the Valet parking section of a parking garage in downtown DC. Since then, if it can be removed without tools, I take it off the bike myself. I use a U-lock on the frame and put a cable through the wheels. I would not recommend anyone to leave lights etc. on their bike in a garage. And if I rode a nice bike to work, I would definitely take it up to my office.

    You: bug
Me: Cyclist along Constitution this morning, about 7:15, who inhaled you.

I guess it was fate; sooner or later it had to be. But why did it have to be you?

I think women are more likely to run errands of various kinds on the way home. That’s true in our family anyway. I know there are people on this forum who do all errands by bike, but for me stopping at the store for a few items is a problem – I don’t have the extra carrying capacity for a gallon of milk. Picking up the dry cleaning has the carrying capacity issue also, plus it takes me a few miles out of the way – no problem in a car, but a question of time and energy on the bike. Sometimes I actually feel that my commuting by bike is an act of selfishness.

I don’t understand how these folks even stay on the path!

One morning last year my headlight died halfway to work. I nearly missed a turn even though I was looking for it. Angry calls from oncoming cyclists were a bonus.

I carry a backup light now.

In general I agree that terms like “Century” or “Metric Century” should be used for organized rides but there are times when I count training rides. For example, if I’m responding to a survey that asks how many centuries I’ve done this year, I may include the ones I did on my own. I suppose it depends on the purpose of the question. If the question is getting at how active I am in organized rides, then my personal rides are not “Centuries”, but they may be “centuries” if the question is about how much riding I have been doing.

I have a couple of problems with the helmet. Many people object to helmet mounted lights because they can blind oncoming riders. Also, if the helmet is damaged and needs to be replaced you have to replace the light also even if the light by itself is fine.

Last night, leaving my office at 8th & K NW about 4:45, headed toward G St., was blocked by cops who had several blocks blocked off. Cop cars with flashing lights all over. Helicopter hovering overhead. No sirens. Anybody have any idea what was going on? I’m used to random police activity closer to the White House, but this was different.

If racers or wannabes need a place to race around hellbent for leather without bothering us more sedate types, do you think it would work if some farmer paved a loop around one of his fields and charged people to do laps? Something like a skating rink.

This whole thread tells me I need to quit being bugged by people who don’t call their passes but otherwise give me plenty of room.
