While this thought isn’t original, now I will think of Kill Bill as a Long Strange Trip.Geoff
ParticipantWhen looking at the photo of the people who Killed Bill last year, my wife observed that women have too much sense for this kind of thing.

ParticipantMy last purchase, a year ago, is a carbon frame Scattante bought for centuries and similar long rides. Buying it took some soul-searching; carbon is very strong for its intended use (Boeing and Airbus use it extensively!) but doesn’t deal well with abuse. I wanted to be sure I could take care of it properly. So far, the bike and I are happy with each other.
My commuter is a steel frame roadbike. I bought it years ago with the thought I would do more multi-day trips like in my youth. That hasn’t happened yet but the traits that would have made it good for touring make it good for the commute.
My third bike is a cheap mountain bike for various off road rides.
I am thinking about getting something cheap and used to keep permanently on the indoor trainer.

See that bush over there? Yeah, that one.
Somehow this brings to mind some jokes that are much too rude to post.

ParticipantSorry to ask such a mundane question… what do people do about lunch?
And other, ah, necessary stops?Geoff
ParticipantWow.

ParticipantI’ll try to come by, probably around 5:00. Probably can’t stay long but might work it into my plans if it becomes a regular thing.

It took a heroic effort from me and a lot of goading from pete to get up that climb at 10 mph. Seeing Hozn climb it at 13 mph was awe-inspiring and soul crushing at the same time.
I’ve done Jay Miller several times with relatively fresh legs. I do about 7mph and gasp like a dying fish at the top.

ParticipantOK, I’ll pencil the event in. Sounds like it will be in my neighborhood, and it’s got climbs. What’s not to like?
Hope I can keep up with the pack though. I may not be able to figure out all those turns on my own.

Am I allowed to be amused by the little conversation this spawned?
I don’t race. I generally ride alone and it has been maybe 40 years since I was in a paceline. Once in a while I find someone on my wheel, and when it happens, I don’t care. They rarely stay long. Sometimes we strike up a nice conversation. I don’t draft strangers unless we started a conversation first; not ethics, just personal preference. I’m not comfortable on his wheel unless he’s comfortable having me there. And I do mean “he”; I don’t want to worry female bikers about some strange guy following them. The YJA (Yellow Jacket of Authority)? Sometimes I wear yellow because I like the color, or it’s dark out, or I want a wind breaker.

if I pass someone with a lot of space then I can do it without dinging and without feeling guilty?
I would still announce the pass. Never know when a ped will make an unexpected U-turn.
But just so you know, I don’t announce every single pass myself. At intersections, where there are lots of things going on and announcing the pass just adds to the noise. When the person has already seen me. When I’m concentrating on something else, like a pothole (but then I do feel guilty).

why is “call your passes” such a point of emphasis?
I think it is harder for a cyclist or pedestrian to be aware of what is happening behind them than it is for a driver. There have been times when I carelessly moved a little to the left and nearly bumped into an unannounced passer. And then there are the pedestrians who, not knowing a bike is coming up behind them, make all kinds of unexpected moves. I think it helps keep us all safer if you let people know you are there.

Spoiler alert: Cycling is number 3, but biking to work isn’t fun.
Very sorry to hear that. Sometimes the ride in is the best part of the day.

ParticipantMy morning commute nearly had excess, ah, excitement.
On the MVT, just south of Memorial Bridge, at the point where to get to the Memorial Bridge you have to cross the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Where they had the warning lights for a while. I came up to the crossing, came to a full stop (I treat this crossing with a lot of respect), and almost immediately the vehicle in the right lane stopped for me. I paused for a moment to make sure the left lane stopped also, and then!
And then there was a honking, and a dust cloud (or was it smoke?), and a tractor / semitrailer swerving violently into the left lane to avoid climbing into the trunk of the car in front. Everybody stopped, no paint scraped, I crossed, and everyone continued on our morning journeys. This must be why some people avoid crossing there at all costs.
Are big trucks even allowed on the GWMP?
