I see what’s going on here.

ParticipantWho asked what we’d “discuss” when BAFS was over?
I certainly didn’t think we’d run out of material, but I did not see sharnado 3 coming.
Makes me wish for blinkies and Fred’s.

Uh-oh, is there enough room for all of us?
The timing generally works out that many people leave when someone arrives so I think we’ll all fit in the space and time we’ll be there.

Monday. The 16th at Lazy Sundea/Mike’s Deli. 7:30 am for PANCAKES! I’ll be there. Who is going to join me?
I’m in. I might try to be there a little earlier.

ParticipantMe: riding the WOD east bound just after Shreve Rd.
You: pasted without calling then didn’t ride any faster than me. You also zipped across in front of a school bus, who rightly honked at you.
Me: looking apologeticly at the bus driver trying to convince her that not all people on bikes have a death wish.As we rode with you about 10 ft in front of me, I noticed you were in full castelli kit, all black. If this was you please call your passes and don’t dart in front of automobiles.

ParticipantThe WOD from sunrise valley to Ballston is fine with 25mm slicks and a little walking (maybe 200 ft of rough ice total).

Participant$5 (or free if you ask nicely) – Continental Mountain King 29er 2.4 wire bead. Never installed.
Yes please!
Did I mention these are very generous offers, it’s so nice when people help each other out on the forum and I’ve always liked your posts.
Thanks

In all honesty, if you can swing the coin, get two cranksets, one standard, one compact, then just adjust the fder. to suit the crank.
This is ridiculous.
If you need 2 crank options you obviously need 2 bikes. Or 1 more bike if you already have 2± but none of the others have *just* the right gearing.

Why so early? Also, do you think it’s worth the effort taking the cassette off and thoroughly degreasing it?
Why so early – because Honz respects the bike (that’s a nice way of saying kind of OCD about bike maintenance). I didn’t change mine until 7k miles, but then I changed the cassette and chain rings at the same time.
Is it worth it – yes at a least the first time, right of passage and all. Plus you’ll really see how much gunk is in there and will be better able to assess if you should take the cassette off next time.
I also have the chain whip tool if you want to borrow it. There are some funny, but I’d say unadvisable, YouTube videos on how to to it without the chain whip.

Which trails exactly is Arlington clearing? I thought they were doing the Custis the W&OD within Arlington. It appears I’ve been giving them way too much credit. The W&OD is terrible/impassible without studs 1/2 mile west of Columbia Pike. This was a disappointing surprise to discover today.
The MVT (I know, not Arlington jurisdiction) was predictably bad too, but actually around the airport it wasn’t as bad as the W&OD.
Arlington cleared the custis and the WOD west of the custis.

Can anyone give an update on the W&OD from Reston to Arlington? Is it an icy minefield, or is there a decent line?
Generally agree with Honz and Dickie, 90+% clear some 100 ft rutted icy stretches, some small sheet ice patches. Glad I had my studs but doable on slicks if you don’t mind walking.

ParticipantRevolution in Clarendon is having their end of winter sale. BOGO or 40% off. Please save some men’s mediums for me.

ParticipantWell Dickie and I had different experiences riding the same trial. I was riding 40mm marathon studs and found the WOD west of Arlington pretty terrifying.
The snow got between the studs and the ice so there was no traction until the tire slipped and the down hill side of the tire pushed the snow out of the way for the uphill side to bit.
So I didn’t fall, and the ride only took 3 mins longer this morning than yesterday, but the combination of hidden ice ruts and limited traction made me very nervous for most of the ride.
I found the worst parts to be (eastbound) just after Park st in Vienna and just after Shreve Rd in Falls Church.
