If you tend to keep your phone in your pocket, it’s easier to check your progress (and start/end rides) if you use Strava. In theory it should be better for monitoring calls and texts. It monitors your heart rate. If you mount your phone to your bike and/or don’t use tracking software it may offer no benefits.

I discovered that my SKS P45 Longboard fenders are slightly too small for my schwalbe marathon 38s. I think my Handsome Devil is very similar to a Surly Crosscheck. Wondering if you can squeeze the 52mm fenders on there….

This is my 2009 Torker Cargo T. It’s all about maximizing the ride days. It’s built around the idea that I don’t want to oil the chain and wipe down the wheels every time it gets wet. It has generator lights via a bottle dynamo, 8 speed internal hub, enclosed chain, Bar Mitts, basket, low step. Yes, those are 26-inch wheels and yes you can still get tires for them. Loving the Schwalbe Big Bens! And no, I can’t figure out how to rotate images after upload…

Happy Hour – Friday is early dismissal day for FFX Co Schools, if that makes any difference. I likely won’t make a HH unless the location is West of Vienna, but appreciate the invite!

    Hello Team!

Hi, I’m Tom and this is my second year of FS. I’ve been commuting to work for about 6 years now out here in Western Fairfax Co. I’m not really big on miles but I’m not perturbed by weather, either. Since I signed up for FS I am no longer employed, so that will change some things (crossing fingers that next job is bike commute-able). I’ll do my best to get out there. I rarely make it into DC for events (which reminds me we should figure out our geographic team center for meeting up) and Green Lizard is my closest bike shop.
I’m also active with FABB if you have any advocacy questions.
If anyone knows of any Product Management jobs, let me know!

    Thanks,

    Tom

The helmet debate has numbers behind it. I don’t know of any data for E-bike crashes, injuries, etc.

How about a heavily-leaning “Stop for Peds in Crosswalk” sign that you frequently see sleeping in the middle of the road?

I did see a few balaclavas and big heavy jackets out this morning. I seemed to have hit the right clothing, which is unusual since every year I have to try and remember what works for what temps (No, I don’t write things down). Today was bib shorts, short sleeve jersey with arm warmers and my Gore softshell jacket with the sleeves removed, long finger gloves, skull cap. At times my toes felt a bit cold, and occasionally the fingers. It’s tricky though sometimes since it’s about 5-6 degrees colder (if not more) where I work, from where I commute from. Also I’m out for almost 2 hours.

Time to bring the winter clothing thread back from the depths. Bring on Freezing Saddles.

I thought the “trying to remember what to wear at this temp” was just a thing I experienced! Are my full-fingered gloves good for 40 or do I need heavy ones (or bar mitts?). Answer – bar mitts or heavier gloves when it’s below 45. I do love the sweat-free commute!

My rain cape keeps my legs dry. I have a good pair of rain pants but haven’t worn them in over a year.

OK, now I’m on the edge of my seat. This is the BBS/bike version of “Car Talk.” Someone figure this out and post it back here already!

Related to this, which shops in the DC-MD-VA area have a lot of experience with generator hubs? Or individuals who have built the generator hub wheels since it really comes down to the skill of the wheel builder.

Bikes at Vienna actually stocks Peter White lights, which is very cool. They will also special order it for you. I ordered my Dyno wheel from Taylor Wheels in Germany via Amazon. They are more utilitarian wheels for everyday cycling (double walled 700c with higher end Shimano dynohub for like $170).

Do any of you have a dynamo not with a “see me type” light, but with a “see where I’m going on unlit roads at 15-20mph with oncoming car headlights in my eyes” light? And if so, what is it and how well does it perform that function?

I am aware of peterwhite website and all the pictures of beam patterns, but… perhaps it’s just me but I don’t feel like 2D still photographs on a computer screen give me a very good sense of the kind of visibility I’d have moving at speed in the [greater than two]-dimensional real world. It’d be nice to know about people’s actual experiences. And maybe even see some lights at work.

I have had the Lumotec IQ Premium Fly RT Senso Plus on my bike for a couple of seasons. The daytime running lights have saved me from a vehicular left cross more than once. The beam has a sharp cutoff and is good for up to 18mph probably. I don’t have it mounted properly as it’s on on my fork. If you cruise in the 18-20mph range than you may want something a little brighter or be really careful of how you mount your IQ Fly light (they recommend the fork crown, but I have a rando rack). Note that the new IX-X can be mounted upside, which would be an advantage over the “tall” IQ Fly form factor if you have a front rack.

I live near Herndon which has a huge population of people from Central America. This New American population is always the first to give you plenty of room when you are on your bike. I think it’s because so many of them walk and bike themselves, or have family members and friends who don’t have cars. Most of the raging, honking drivers are cutting through Herndon on their commutes from Loudoun County. They are in a hurry, local community be dammed. Ironically these commuters are going through Herndon to skip the tolls.

hope you got some tires! thanks for the post!

In hindsight I should have bought and resold 6 pair. Unfortunately I didn’t buy any as I was looking for 26 x 1.75 for my Dutch Bike that I ride in the winter.
