ParticipantBW,
I used to commute regularly through both Henderson Hall and Ft Meyer, essentially a short-cut between 14th St Br and Clarendon–and that was around and after 9-11 so security was heightened. I had civilian DoD ID, and I was often asked for it when entering either reservation. I’m sure DoD affiliation helped. I recommend make a telephone or written request to the post Provost or transportation office. At least you’ll get more information, or maybe even a pass.If all else fails, consider this route to avoid pass-thru. I also did this route regularly before discovering I could cut through the posts. Surprisingly, Washington Bvd is not so bad! Shoulders are 15′ and it is well graded (former rail/trolley line). Have to be aware and use great caution crossing entrance exit ramps. More than a few times (heading towards DC) slightly downhill, I picked up a dump truck at the Pershing stoplight on Wash Blvd, and drafted to Rt 50 or even Columbia Pike (once I think I got close to 50 mph!) Though I don’t recommend drafting dump trucks on Wash Blvd,.. but it was fun, (though very foolhardy)

ParticipantMy 2014 goal is to get to know at least 20 riders (new to me) that really enjoy cycling, relish achievement, are good sports, and can make me laugh!

ParticipantWell, it looks like we’re all starting the new year off right. I’m shooting for around 10 AM also.
That is, barring conflict with any family plans…(Festive 500 used up my brownie points)

One day you y’ungs will face the unpleasant reality of getting old. …Getting old sucks. But then again, it dont mean you have to give into it – .
R, I admire your outlook, especially that last bit.
For me,
consolation comes from focusing on the benefits of aging: 1) get to forget tons of stuff
2) senior discounts (lifetime entrance to all national parks for $10, 5% off at Harris Teeter, cheaper movies, etc.
3) no kids in diapers
4) most or all your mortgage is paid off
5) can afford more bikes and gear
6) food we used to hate tastes okay now (cooked carrots, kale, brussel sprouts, etc.)
7) get to say, ‘been there done that’ a lotDave

This is what actually got recorded!(Lots of muddy puddles after all the rain–the execution didn’t turn out so well)
and I’ve got to work on the GPS resolution.

I generally don’t condone flagging the MUP segments because I believe that is punishing all the good riders for the poor actions of a few (that may or may not be behaving badly because of Strava). … I’m of no danger to anyone other than the errant squirrel.

… what the forum sponsors and members have been encouraging from all riders is to ride responsibly… All that seems to be part of the PAL (Predictable, Alert and Lawful) program. We have all experienced those ELITE riders that seem to be only concerned about themselves. Short of something rash, we can only provide a good example and encourage others to do so.
Leading by example may be the best way to change things for the better.

I saw consularrider and fast friendly guy on the WOD yesterday. My wife asked if Dave always rode with a Santa hat – that would be so cool if you did all year round, that would be your signature piece…
To tell you the truth, I’ve been a little worried about this. First of all, that white pompom likes to whip around and hit me in the face, so I figured that if I made the Festive 500, I would lose the hat immediately…. Problem is other riders are saying it’s the only way they recognize me on the trail (it’s not easy being nondescript). Still, it would be too weird to wear that thing after New Year’s. I gotta figure out another MO.

I took a long ride. It was an easy ride and I had no problem doing the ride. But lordy, days later and I still feel like I am bruised. Recovery time is getting harsher…How do you 50+ guys do these monster rides and still soldier on??
Bob,
As a master of ‘senior moments’ and as an official ‘old fart’, my strategy is simple. I pretend I’m Tim K, Vincent N, Chris S., Jason B, Steve E, or any of those energetic and fast young guys. An essential element of my strategy is to stay away from mirrors and avoid looking too closely at selfies. Then after riding further and faster than nature intends for me, I remind myself of Rule 5. At 63, I may be only young in spirit, but I’ll tell you one thing….I get senior discounts and those young athletes don’t!P.S. An Advil or two sometimes comes in handy.

Whatcha think?I’ve already discovered that the user manual is really not helpful.
Hi Kel,
I find that ‘heading’ is very satisfying to display (cardinal compass points not degrees) Most weather sources show wind direction this way.
