Eminva,
There is so much I like about your 15+ mile Strava horse! I admire your excellent use of streets to create your drawing, especially the mane, the ear, and the tail. I understand the patience and precision needed for the backtracking required to create the legs and tail. I enjoy the gestural angle of the rear legs and the whimsical hooves on the front legs, all delivered with playful yet credible lines. This is larger and more complex than your first creation (the pig) plus this horse has the vertical orientation which, in my opinion, is the mark of a superior Strava drawing. I can’t wait to see what’s next!January 31, 2014 at 10:40 am in reply to: Capital Bikeshare discount for residents of Arlington #992531Fast Friendly Guy

I finally got around to getting my membership. Good for lunch time rides up to Courthouse (puff, puff, puff).
As an economist, I’ve often wondered….
OPEN QUESTION TO THE FORUM ABOUT CABI PRICING
A 90 minute ride costs $14, but a 30 minute ride is FREE. Can you daisy-chain several, say 25 minute, rides in the same trip for free?Fast Friendly Guy

Let’s see, it’s supposed to be about 20°F at 7 am tomorrow. Must.ride.road.bike.
Have fun, everyone! Twenty-nine Sophomores and Juniors are a poor match for the wizened good humor of hardened winter bike riders! Slosh one down for the Gipper!

It took me down at approximately 0 mph at noon today. It was terribly embarrassing.
Yikes, Mark, hope you and the new bike are okay. Lucky you weren’t going faster!

Man, I wish I could sit in a nice cozy cockpit and draw, instead of freezing, dodging cars, waiting at lights, and wondering about some of the neighborhoods I’ve seen! :p

my technique is ridewithgps and my garmin 800. even that fails me on a pretty regular basis
Shawn,
Same here, ridewithgps and my garmin 810. Lots of planning to pick a route that minimizes backtracking (not always what you’d think if you were drawing by hand)I also employ back-up recordings on my Garmin Oregon 650, edge 200 and sometimes iPhone. As a purist, at heart, I limit my drawings to follow streets, but take advantage of parks, parking lots, fields (open spaces) to draw between streets (you did this on your propeller and I’m doing it on my elephant, taking advantage of artistic opportunities on the national mall between Wash Mon and Smithsonian). Also, I discovered small doesn’t work because GPS resolution is insufficient for any art contained in an area less than one-half mile in diameter–see my Raffa Festive 500 Patch at the very tip of Hanes Pt.

Shawn, Very creative! I like the way you used Folger Park to create your propeller diagonals. I do the same thing with parks, circles, and open areas (like the mall) We must compare notes and share techniques!

ParticipantHope to see you there! I’m aiming for 7:00, but it might be a little after that. Coming from EFC, I plan to continue around the Loop to Custis and back home before work.

I was also going to post about the problem near N Scott St. Just to clarify what the problem is: Heading east-bound toward Rosslyn, just about where the sound barrier next to Lee Hwy ends, the bike path merges onto sidewalk before eventually crossing Scott St., which is the first road crossing on the downhill run to Rosslyn. The merge from the east-bound lane of the bike path to the sidewalk is fine. The problem occurs when an east-bound cyclist has to go in the west-bound lane to pass pedestrians. The merge from the bike path to the sidewalk creates a diagonal edge that can easily catch a tire and cause a cyclist to go down (as it sounds like happened with Fast Friendly Guy). This hazard has been repaired before, but as I went through that section this morning I noticed that the blacktop has worn down / disintegrated in that spot so that the hazard has returned.

Yep! That’s exactly it….and I’m not the only one who’s fallen here.

ParticipantI’ve been riding mostly on side streets and main roads, because it’s a smoother, quicker ride than icy trails, but have you noticed the SALT? I don’t mind when the salt stays on the road; I don’t like the way it coats my bike, but I really don’t like the way cars grind it to a fine gray dust and then send it airborne! It hangs in the air like thick fog in the wake of moving cars! I can taste it when I breathe through my mouth!
It can’t be good to breathe that stuff! Anyone else notice or have a problem with this?
