Isn’t it the organizers who are insisting that it’s a rain or shine event, not the participants? If they don’t set up tents and lay out swag, then I won’t go to the pit stops and I’ll completely understand. But if they set up, why should I stay away?
Yup! Shawn’s nailed it.

I can also remember the first time I did the Arlington Loop. I thought I had done the most amazing cycling achievement!
Don’t forget when W&OD crossed Carlyn Springs at grade*, before they routed it under the bridge. The only way to avoid crossing Carlyn Springs back then was to take 4MRT on the other side of the stream, passing by picnic areas and the Frisbee golf course, rejoining W&OD at Bluemont cutoff or the Bonnaire tennis courts.
*though officially blocked now by an ineffective barrier, there’s still a use/desire trial through the weeds (and it makes a great short cut to Carlyn Spgs, up N. Kensington to Bluemont and Ballston)

For their to be Free Stuff, someone has to volunteer to work these pit stops. And the Volunteers may not get the concept of Rule 9.
No sweat…we just reach over the unmanned table into the box of stuff on the other side (smiling in a friendly way, of course) and help ourselves!
BTW, since I’m still too beat up to “Ride to Work” on RTWD, I’m planning on: PYBTWD (Push Your Bike To Work Day) and I’m pushing the Black Battleship to the Rosslyn stop early–’cause I’m not missing out on my T-shirt again this year!

I’ll run fatties on Viaje. Picking up some new Clement X-Plor 40s from Bikenetic this week!
Sounds like fun! I’ve been waiting to introduce the Black Battleship (Trek Cross-Rip) to an off-road/gravel type ride since I bought it in November, and the 40-miler sounds about right! My problem now is trying to decide if I’ll be healed enough in 2-weeks–my guess is probably not, especially not for a rough ride. If so, I’ll just have to catch the next one!

ParticipantLook on the bright side….If the weather is crappy, attendance will fall off (as belle-weathers bail) and that means more FREE stuff for the faithful!

Ouch! Heal up quick! Stupid lumpy pavements!
Kel, This was the mother of all pavement lumps–a series of 3″-4″ moguls in rapid succession in the S. bound curb lane of 15th St, about 100′ before Constitution Ave!
Wavy pavement no doubt caused over time by zillions of cars braking on summer-softened asphalt

Suck. Does the bike need to be retrieved or is that taken care of?
Shawn, a thoughtful question; thanks, no. Karen B rescued it first thing this morning. It’s now at the bike hospital! It’ll heal much faster than I.

Sorry for the accident. Your smiling face in the morning will be missed by all.
Down, but not out! For the indeterminate future you’ll have to call me, “Stationary Missing Guy”

Oh no… is the bike okay??
Sorry that happened, best wishes for a smooth recovery.
Thanks, VVill.
Nothing that $500 bucks wouldn’t fix!

ELITE for wearing your cycling cap in the hospital… Get well soon.
Yup! My new cap was on its maiden voyage when disaster struck. (and I’m wearing it now! There’re a few things I can still do)
