Regardless I wouldn’t use the suicide levers, just take them off.
Wait, can you take them off and leave the rest of the brake intact? I have them on my 1984 bike I use to go to the metro, but I never use them; I brake with the lower levers. I thought they had to stay on as a decorative accessory.
Will have to take a closer look at this later.

ParticipantIt looks like the two events are on different days — the Cap City event on 7/12 and the PP event on 7/18, so there shouldn’t be a conflict — ?

That video scares the hell out of me. I would rather be in the street, but I guess they have the drivers trained well there. One thing I noticed was that the sight lines were a lot better than where we have circles in the U.S. What happens when you add pedestrians to the mix?
I didn’t see any provisions for pedestrians in the video — they would not be in the bike lane, because in the Netherlands they separate pads and bikes. Usually there is a sidewalk next to the bike lane for pedestrians. Either the pedestrians are shunted off somewhere else out of the field of vision here, or maybe this is a remote spot where people don’t walk.
Yes, Dave, you should go to the Netherlands for vacation!

I am planning a midnight ride that ends about 1215 am on 1 Aug. For a moment, I will be number 1 in America!
August 1st is my birthday — I was thinking that this year I should adopt the custom of riding a mile for every candle. That should get me up there! For about a minute.

ParticipantWasn’t Dismal Scientist selling some bikes recently? If any are left, would they be the right size? All other things being equal, I would feel more comfortably buying from someone I know who has maintained the bike well, or would disclose any shortcomings.

ParticipantJust so I understand this . . . yesterday, I took three trips totalling 32 miles. For purposes of logging in this challenge, I combined them and entered one trip of 32 miles. Reviewing this thread, I think this was a mistake. I should have logged each trip separately, because each one counts (up to four per day), no?
Just want to make sure I do this in a way that benefits WABA. Thanks.

Lee & W&OD at Falls Church was a 4 way blinker this morning. Not a problem before 7 (actually kind of nice–the wait was very short), but I can’t imagine what it was like later.
CORRECTION: It was NOT a four-way blinker. It was blinking red for traffic coming off I-66, and blinking yellow for traffic on Lee Highway. Thus, motorists coming off the interstate thought they had a four way stop and the folks on Lee Highway thought they could go through, with caution. Luckily when I went through, it was all jammed up and nobody was moving, but that should get changed to a four-way red blinker, pronto.

ParticipantI see Tim Kelley already posted his Total 200 results to Strava. He was 2nd place overall and got a few KOMs even. Congratulations, Tim!
Congrats to his Garmin battery, as well, which appears to have survived for over 11 hours.
Will post if I notice evidence of anyone else having endured this adventure.

Thanks for the update, Dana. That totally destroys my plan to do 100 fast laps tonight on the way home!
Tim? Is that you?

ParticipantWill try to follow the action using transmissions of questionable legitimacy. I don’t have whatever-that-sports-network-is-called-now on my package. Would be very interested in brunch/tour meetups, although I will be out of town for part of the action.

ParticipantGood advice, Dana, and thanks to your friend for helping keep the streak alive. Sorry about your bike.
When the frame cracked on my old (too big) bike, I had no trouble whatsoever getting a replacement under warranty through the LBS. They even upgraded me. It was a different manufacturer, but I suspect they are all good with warranty service. Good luck.

ParticipantP.S. To everyone doing the Total 200 tomorrow — be careful and get through safely. Let us know you made it okay, or even better, if you let discretion be the better part of valor. We’ll accept it in the form of war stories.

ParticipantFor those of you looking to make some headway on me in the NBC, I took my one and only ride for the day about an hour ago — a 2.4 mile downhill jaunt on a CaBi, and even that was bad. Please take it easy going home tonight. Take a rest in the middle of your ride even. Not the day to overdo it.

Ha! My reaction, too. I was impressed that they actually have women’s shorts, which is a rare animal in the cycling world. I just ordered the Terry Metro short, but the first size was too big and I’m waiting for the replacement.
