GuyContinental, I will look at the cookbook tonight and see if there is anything that would work for you. You’ve gotten good suggestions here. I am also a fan of sandwiches, so I might bring the fixings in on Monday, put them in the refrigerator and be set for the week.

Thanks also for all the rice cake suggestions. I have not yet tried out any of those recipes because I don’t have a rice cooker let alone the right kind of rice. Maybe I will get ambitious soon. Our family loves the Angel Hair pasta recipe and now is a great time to fix that one because it incorporates fresh tomatoes, corn kernels and basil. It is my son’s favorite dinner, hands down.

Also very interesting to read about what people scarf down at their desks. I am a rack and panniers type so I bring in leftovers. Failing that, a PBJ sandwich. The worst case scenario involves various local eateries, but that gets expensive day after day.

Hey, I know that one! The College Park Aviation Museum. Nice.

Does it cover lunch? I couldn’t find a review that went into detail. Lunch is my problem… a) I hate it for some irrational reason and b) when I ride I need to stay on-site so have to stock up on staples at the office.

Tell me what you’ve got to work with . . . microwave? refrigerator? stove? I’ll look at some recipes to see if there is anything that can be put together in a limited culinary environment.

That’s a pretty steep and long hill so you know what you’ve got in store for you.

I would suggest you also investigate bus routes along your chosen route — you are adding a lot of miles at once and it would be good to have a quick alternative if you get tired. You can put your bike on the front of a metro bus.

    Good luck!

If you want to go through the city, there is a bike lane on 14th Street and then a cycletrack on 15th Street. You have to contend with buses on 14th, but it is doable. That was about 80% of my first bicycle commute. You are able to move pretty well through there.

Once you get downtown, you could cut over to H Street (going through the closed off section of PA Avenue in front of the White House) and get on the Roosevelt Bridge and from there link up to the Custis. That route would probably put you in the least amount of auto traffic. However, you have to contend with a lot of pedestrian traffic by GWU.

You can’t get around it, you will have a lot of climbing to do. But this route keeps it to a minimum, I think.

And I used this thread as justification to eat:

    1 banana- 100
    2 yogurts- 240
    2 granola bars- 200
    1 bag veggie chips- 130
    1 lean cuisine (I’m cheap…) – 250
    3l water
    = 920 calories via all-day grazing

I’m probably still (well) short on protein and calories in general- riding 3+ hours a day at my height, age and weight I probably need in the neighborhood of 5,000 calories to stay on top of weight loss… yikes, I need to take advantage of my next “car day” to scoot to CostCo and buy some nuts and maybe a block of cheese. ;-)

(Oh and the “LFP” in question is indeed Lake Fairfax)

This sounds like a cyclist who could be in the market for The Feed Zone Cookbook.

The trail was nearly empty this morning. So were the roads. I guess I’m in the ELITE group of non-vacationers.

I had no such luck — guess everyone joined me on the late shift today. Including a higher than normal volume of cars on M Street, PA Ave and L Street. Maybe the last week of August will be good?

KelOnWheels, I think I missed something — how are you calculating cadence?

dasgeh sighting on the morning commute. Nice to meet you! So glad you are able to continue your bicycle commute through your pregnancy (which also made it easier to identify you).

Nice seeing you! I had my phone in my jersey pocket, but had I attempted photography on the fly, I fear dcv would have been reporting on the carnage behind the Italian Store. This is one skill that needs more practice.

I realize I’m coming to this thread late, but some of you might be a little young to appreciate the political implications of the Olympic games. I was a youth athelete keeping my eye on the stars of Track and Field in the 1970’s. Because of the Cold War, there were very few opportunities for athletes from the west to compete against athletes from behind the Iron Curtain. Virtually none, except for the Olympics. The boycotts of 1980 and 1984 were devastating for many of those athletes.

Things are much different today, and I realize that. Sports is a business and I have no illusions about the lengths some athletes will go to to get an edge (and that is nothing new). But there is a history of sport being politicized, with the athletes bearing the consequences.

Looking forward to getting up early tomorrow!

I don know. I think the mob has spoken and we should use the Bike Arlington logo:

Ha ha! And I sent a Bike Arlington (Virginia) backpack to my niece, who is a student at University of Texas Arlington.

I’ve been there, and the campus is fine, but the rest of the town didn’t seem too bike friendly. Although it is all relative, I suppose. If they came up with a logo they are ahead of 90% of the municipalities there.

Can’t believe some folks considered Cipollini to be a sex symbol. Yuck.

Actually, I think “some folks” includes only Cipo himself, and possibly his minions who were well compensated to perpetuate that notion. I think there was an element of campy fun to it, too. And the best “personalities” become the media favorites.

The BikeSnob refers to this as “shoaling”. Cat 6 racers group up at red lights, but instead of lining up behind the other riders, they collect like a shoal or horizontal bicycle stalactite of douchebaggery, encroaching further and further into the intersection in some kind of weird game of one-upsmanship, until the light turns green and they all race to the next red light. They are fun to pass but they drive me nuts.

Sigh. One thing I like about winter . . . the die hard regulars line up first come, first served at the W&OD/Gallows crossing during that 2.5 minute red light. Then sort themselves out on the other side.

In case the suspense was killing you, my gold medal arrived in the mail today! That makes a total of three medals on the hook on my bulletin board (it joins the other two from Race for the Cure). I am a winner. Woo hoo!

If only there were Strava segments for best matched socks, 80’s music trivia, etc. . . . .

In all seriousness, if safe passing was a competitive sport that could be measured and the results displayed publicly on the internet, I bet everyone would be falling all over themselves to announce their passes. ;)
