Yeah, I went ahead and added support this weekend for segment tracking. It took awhile to initially fill that data in, but it’s all there now (but not exposed in the UI). I need to look up the Hains Point segments (and any others that might be of interest), but it should be relatively easy to build a leaderboard for most times around Hains point, etc.

Thank you, Hans! Appreciate the effort.

So, hear that, ya’ll? Get your Hains Point Loops in so that you can be considered for this fabulous pointless prize!

(And those of you tracking manually, I’ll be happy to collect your data by private message as the competition draws to a close.)

Anyone have suggestions on crossing Florida? Doing it at R is unpleasant at best – because it’s diagonal, it’s a really broad stretch of road to cross, and the cross traffic doesn’t stop.

Good point — you can avoid it altogether by going north on First, crossing Rhode Island (there is a signal at 1st and RI) and cutting west on the neighborhood streets from there (or continuing north on First). That neighborhood has gotten quite vibrant in the last few years and there should be plenty of foot traffic even in the evening.

R, then west to 1st may also be an option, but I don’t have a good sense for what traffic is like on 1st, and it looks kinda narrow.

This is the route I would recommend, too, or the alternative suggestion of 1st. 1st is a quiet residential street, although narrow, very bikeable.

    You are trending uphill, though.

A category that favors the Custis commuter!

hozn, this is amazing magic that you are performing. Is it possible to datamine (is that a word?) a particular segment? I am awarding most Hains Point loops (team and possibly individual, if a clear winner can be determined with certainty). I imagine the way to do this would be to pick one of the HP segments (e.g., gate to gate) and tally the number of times each participant has ridden it over the time period. Is this possible?

    Thanks.

Big sale at the Chrome website — on Saturday, all sale items were 40% off, yesterday, 50% and today, 60%. They have bags, shoes, wearing apparel and accessories on sale.

Ladies, I highly recommend the women’s Vanya knickers, but they run large, so consider ordering a size down. $48 today only!

Believe it or not, my husband asked when I was going to get my next bike and what kind of bike it was going to be. So I must not be at S-1!

(Or, he wants another bike and figures if I get one first it will be okay).

At the risk of extending us off topic, I have friends who volunteer to pick up leftover produce from a local farmer’s market each week and take it to a local feeding program. Maybe because it is a regularly scheduled thing, the kitchen is able to work the donations into their menus without waste and is appreciative of the fresh produce.

Just wanted to note that these things do happen, at least on a small scale.

No I haven’t asked WABA, wow, what a good idea!

in the meantime, bikes the sights called me back and I wondered if for LCI, I needed a hybrid or a road bike. FYI if you rent for more than one day, the price drops 50%. anyways, I have emailed the League about that ?. so the bike rental would be picked up at Union Station if I need to rent from Bike the sights. so whew… I have a bike!!

When I took the course, most people had road bikes but there were a couple with hybrids. You will be demonstrating your proficiency at the skills drills from Traffic Skills 101 so it needs to be a bike you can handle well.

Also, though you didn’t ask, I think it’s important to tell you that for the “road test,” the LCI candidates ride a six mile course through DC in small groups (four students plus one instructor in each group), with the candidates taking turns leading the group. The WABA staff designs the course and they make sure it has some of the trickiest intersections in DC — it’s challenging for those us who ride here everyday, in fact, I think only one of my fellow students got through without a single mistake (he posts on this forum at times; you know who you are and kudos). If I were you, I’d pick up the DC Bike Map at the WABA office and study it carefully along with the cue sheet to familiarize yourself with the route.

I am not famliar with your hotel, but it is very near WABA, and in a safe and busy part of town.

If she’s taking the LCI course, she’s not going to be able to use a bikeshare bike.

Marianne, what size bike are you looking for? There are probably people here who could loan you a bike for the LCI course. Also, you are not allowed to use your road shoes with cleats for the LCI course, so you may want to bring flat pedals or something that is not too difficult to ride with sneakers.

As for lodging, unfortunately, I am 15 miles from DC so I can’t give you any great advice. The LCI course is grueling and practically around the clock, so I’d say stay as close as possible. Can someone else offer advice, as near to Adams Morgan as possible?

Thanks for your contributions to the cycling community in Little Rock! Good luck with the LCI course.

Yes, that was me! Sorry I didn’t catch on sooner; the sun was directly in my eyes so I didn’t see much beyond a sillouette until we were just about to pass.

Hope the Cedar Lane Ice Troll didn’t take you down.

What is it about Pennsylvania Avenue that prompts so many motorists to u-turn? While I don’t usually commute on K Street, for about half of the last 14 years, I’ve had an office that affords me a view of K (to say nothing of walking along the street while going to lunch, errands, etc). I do see illegal u-turns from time to time, but nothing like you are describing on Penn. Why?

The trails were a bit sketchy this morning. Ice on the bridges and especially at the W&OD/Custis T-intersection. Some black ice here and there, and frost along the trail.

And the boardwalk troll expanded his territory today. I went down! First time on the commute in three years. It was the W&OD crossing of Cedar, which was like a skating rink. Who would guess the trail would be fine but the busy suburban cross street would be untreated? Anyway, many Helpy Helpertons who had kindly stopped to let me cross were there to witness. The bike just slid out from under me while I was starting to clip back in. I was okay, the bike was okay, but the Helpys all sat there transfixed and unmoving, even after I had dragged the bike and my pride well out of the intersection. Thanks to the guy who asked if I was okay.

    Be careful out there!

P.S. to Culimerc (I think) and crysb — sorry for not warning you about Cedar when I saw you going the opposite way. The sun was in my eyes and I didn’t recognize you until it was too late to say anything. Hope you didn’t go down, too.
