2/27/21 – the words “Black” and/or “White” (any language)

On February 27, 1981, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder started recording Ebony and Ivory. Fun fact: while Billboard magazine ranked it #59 of the Hot 100 songs of all-time, Blender magazine named it the tenth worst song of all time. :D

On your ride, find the word “black” or “white” on a sign. If you capture both words in one snapshot, you’ll get 2 points.

    Happy hunting!

2/26/21 – Acronym or Initialism (3 letters or more)

On February 26, 1935, Watson-Watt demonstrates the feasibility of RADARRAdio Detection And Ranging – to the British Air Ministry. This got me to thinking that there are acronyms everywhere, especially when you count hidden ones.

On your ride, find an acronym or initialism, whether it be standalone or within other words. Here’s a list of some examples: https://abbreviations.yourdictionary.com/articles/common-accronyms.html

    Two things for this hunt:

    1. It has to be 3 letters or more
    2. You have to let us know what your acronym/initialism is and spell it out

    Happy hunting!

2/25/21 – Duck (likeness of animal or the word)

On February 25, 1970, “Rubber Duckie” premiered on Sesame Street when Ernie sang the song while taking a bath. Fun fact:
“The segment was so popular that the song was issued as a single with the show’s theme song as the flip side. In September, it peaked at #16 on the Hot 100, and on November 16, it once again appeared on Sesame Street, this time in a Season 2 segment again with Ernie performing the song.”

On your ride, capture a likeness of a duck, whether it be an actual duck, an image, or made of rubber. Caveat is that it can’t be your own duck.

    Happy hunting!

I’ve used a banjo brothers market pannier https://banjobrothers.com/products/market-pannier and/or my other panniers (ortlieb, North St. backpack pannier). I brought my pannier(s) into the grocery store and loaded my groceries directly into them, instead of using canvas bags.

Yes! I love how panniers can clip directly to the top of the sides of shopping carts. It also gives me a good idea of the capacity of what I can bring home. If you get a cart big enough, you can just have them clipped on the inside of the cart and not knock over too many apples… I mean, I imagine you’d knock over less stuff ;)

2/24/21 – “Charles and Diana” Subanagram Word (5 letters or more)

Prince Charles and Lady Diana announced their engagement to the world on 2/24/81. Infuriating fact: after getting engaged to Charles, Diana was shamed into selling her bicycle because it “wasn’t very regal to be riding around London” 😡

On your ride, find a subanagram word (not the object) using just the letters “Charles and Diana”. Take a snapshot, and post your one pic here in the forum.

    Happy hunting!

2/23/21 – Mosaic (likeness or word)

On February 23, celebrate National Tile Day by seeking and taking a snapshot of a mosaic – a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass.

The word “mosaic” is also acceptable, but I think it’s safe to say that we the horde prefer the art :)

    Happy hunting!

    2/22/21 – Purple House

On February 22, 1994, Prince is granted the trademark on the love symbol he has been using as his name.

On your ride, since Purple Rain might be a little hard to find, seek a purple house. The house does not have to be totally purple — it can have purple shutters or a door. Any shade of purple is fine, as long as it’s not pink.

2/21/21 – the round Peace symbol or the word “peace” (in any language)

British designer and artist Gerald Holtom introduced the peace symbol to an anti-nuclear pacifist organization on February 21, 1958. It represents the letters “N” and “D” (in semaphore) for “Nuclear Disarmament”.

On your ride, find the peace symbol (not the Mercedes logo!) or the word “peace”, which can be in any language.

2/20/21 – Overhead Picture from “Such Great Heights” (+1 point for including biker)

On 2/20/1792 – The Postal Service Act, establishing the United States Post Office Department, is signed by President George Washington. 211 years later, one of my favorite albums – Give Up – was released by the band The Postal Service in 2003. On this album is a song called “Such Great Heights” and it is the theme for the photo hunt for the day.

On your ride, 229 years after the original Postal Service was created, take a creative photo from a high vantage point looking downwards, whether atop a bridge, overlook, or somewhere else that’ll give you a great overhead view. Bonus point if there is a clearly discernible biker in the photo. BTW, no selfies/danger pandas for this hunt.

    Happy hunting!

Perhaps I’ve misinterpreted the task, and it needs to be one of the nine planets in our solar system, and not a generic “planet”. For now at least, here’s the word “planet”:

I wish the forum supported strikethough text, it’d be helpful. Now, it looks like the word “planet” is confirmed acceptable as well.

I’m going to resist updating the hunted object after my initial post (like I did yesterday and today) because I know it can confuse people. Safety is always my concern, and like I and others have mentioned before, it’s just a pointless prize game… which I hope injects a little fun and interest on your rides. One thing about these mid-day updates is that I won’t ever make it harder.

Everyone please be careful out there!

2/19/21 – Planet(s) – likeness or name of a specific planet or the word “planet”

On February 19, 1473, Nicolaus Copernicus was born. He was a mathematician and astronomer during the Renaissance that proposed the heretical idea that Earth was not the center of the universe, but instead it was the sun.

On your ride, find anything related to one of our 9 planets (yes, I’m including Pluto), whether it be a likeness or the name of the planet. However, if you take a picture of dirt and call it Earth, you’ll get exactly .25 points :D Let us know which planet is in your photo.

    EDIT at 10:18 AM
Sorry I keep waffling. Pick a specific planet OR use “planet”. It’s all good for 1 point.

drevil, I feel sorry for the headache you’ll have after scoring today’s hunt! For example, the Chevy Volt is a plug-in hybrid and the Niro is a hybrid. Neither are EVs.

    Yeah, I know :(

When did the ‘ask’ change? I operated all day on the idea that no hybrids were allowed. I could have had any number of those. sigh

At about 4pm. I sometimes can’t tell if I made the hunt too hard or too easy. I was really busy at work today and didn’t have much time for breaks to check the forum, Facebook, or outside, but I did see it looked sketchy. Obviously, I didn’t want people to get hurt looking for particular types of cars, so I made it easier. To anyone upset about this midday change, sorry.

2/18/21 – Full Electric Car (Hybrids OK!)

EDIT: Hybrids like the Prius are OK for today’s hunt.

On National Battery Day, which is February 18, take a picture of a fully electric or hybrid car.

I know this could go all over the place, so a few rules:

    1. It CAN be a hybrid (which rely on both battery and gas), e.g., the Toyota Prius, Ford Fusion. Hybrid cars often have the word around the model name
    2. It has to be a car that people can ride in on a highway, so no little radio control (RC) cars or golf carts
    3. It can’t be at a dealership
    4. It can’t be your own

    Point scoring for this hunt:

    • 1 point for any partially electric/partially gas hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius, or
    • 1.5 points for a Tesla (since they are so popular in our area), or
    • 2 points for any fully electric car that isn’t a Tesla
    • An extra two points if this hybrid/electric car has a bike rack on it (must be clearly visible in the pic)

    Happy hunting!

For example, this Tesla with a bike rack would garner you 3 points (1 for car, +2 for bike rack), and a bunch of salivating bike nerds.

1/17/21 – Bird House or Bird Bath

I can’t tell if it’s just in the UK, but February 14-21 is National Nest Box Week, but I’ve also seen it listed as Homes for Birds Week. Fun fact: George Lucas’ (creator of Star Wars) wife commissioned a bird house, which was a 7′ wide reproduction of their Skywalker Ranch residence.

On your ride, find a bird house, bird feeder or a bird bath, snap a pic, and post it here for 1 point. If you capture a live bird on any of those three things, that’ll be 2 points total.

    Happy hunting!

2/16/21 – Crown or Mask (with eyeholes)

Mardi Gras, aka Fat Tuesday, is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday. Fun fact: if you want to ride on a Mardi Gras float you must wear a mask. In fact, it is actually illegal to ride one without one!

On your ride, find a crown (that sits on top of your head) or a mask (that has eyeholes). If you find the word, it’ll be 1 point. If you find a likeness, that’ll be 2 points total.

    Happy hunting!
