ParticipantWell thanks to twowheels I learned about the giro hipster line and picked up their undershorts for 60% off (urban outfitters again… its becoming a worrying trend in my cycling purchases). Only XL is left.. I guess I snagged the last small?
And I’ve found their Overshorts for 50% off. Score.
At least I’m consistent. All summer I was worried about what to wear in the winter and now that its winter I worry about the summer.

ParticipantGreat commute in this morning. The evening commute is looking balmy. Might even be dropping the jacket if it really does stick around in the 40s.

Ah, that’s my favourite graph on FS! Although I have to admit average speed is pretty meaningless. Aside from snow/ice conditions and even kidical towing I think one of the years I had the Arlington mardi gras parade “ride” included in my data.
Average speed is the only thing I’m near the top of… don’t go using common sense and raining on my parade.

There are others; as @jrenaut mentions, brands like Zoic have cheaper options. Find the brand that fits you; that’s really the ticket. I buy Oakley or Fox DH (downhill mtb) shorts when they are on clearance; I wouldn’t pay more than $50-60 for shorts. You can wear them over padded shorts/liners or not. I wear them as regular shorts in the summer; they also work great on the bike. I’ve had my Oakleys for over 5 years, worn them regularly, banged them up, and they are holding up great.
I actually own a pair of Oakley shorts that I ride in currently (weather permitting…). They were actually designed for golf but seem no worse for wear on a bike. The issue I have is that the pant leg is very wide. I’m imagining a slim fit / tailored short leg so that I’m not dragging so much. It actually became an issue when I put an sks s-blade fender on my bike. The shorts are baggy enough that they can grab the quick-release and dump my itty bitty fender. I was lucky and it just sat on top of my rear wheel all nice as I bailed off of Lee highway but it was concerning for sure.
Also, not cotton. Cotton is the devil.

“Baggies” don’t necessarily have to be baggy. Giro, Swrve, and others all make “regular” shorts that have a relatively close fit and that are designed for the rigors of riding.
The Giro Ride Overshorts are exactly what I’m looking for. You rock. The price is staggering though. I actually saw the face my wife will make in my mind… it was great… or depressing… possibly frightening.

1. The world doesn’t want to see me in lycra. Neither does my wife, so spending money on it would earn an immediate slap on the wrist.
I have no bodily fears of wearing lycra and the DW is not against it at all. I run in tights on a regular basis. I can’t comment on what others are comfortable with seeing me in though.
I’ve not yet had a comfort issue riding without padding. I’ve never ridden more than 14 miles and have never really had an issue… my seat and I just seem to get along nicely I guess.
I love this forum, I know the platform vs clipless debate will rage on forever (both in my mind and throughout the land). I don’t expect an answer. I don’t think there is one. I do think this upcoming summer if I stumble onto some mtb shoes in a 43 or 44 and are a steal I might give it a whirl. It sounds like the real answer to this is that I need to find out for myself. Big shocker there.

ParticipantOur maximization knows no bounds.
Dead last in time in saddle as a team, but 8th in points.
I like the way we ride.

ParticipantHello team,
I’m Daniel Plasters, I live in the townhouses south of the Vienna metro and bike to work in west west west Falls Church. Its my first ever FS so I have no idea what to expect. Most of my riding is my commuting but I try to get out for quick rides on the weekends as well.
Our strava team is already set as Lucky Pr1m3s and I have no issue with that.

I purposefully read them on certain articles (I do not respond). I generally find the internet as serious business to be pretty funny. People get worked up over such odd things.

ParticipantA good article. I’m not holding my breath for a serious talk to actually take place though.
The comments section should be interesting….

No drivers license for life, minimum. She had a .27 blood alcohol in a 2010 stop with shredded tire (wonder what she ran over that time?). Now a .22 while texting. Astonishing level of irresponsibility for the safety of others.
Based on the timeline from the press conference, she blew that .22 nearly an hour after the incident, if not more. She should certainly have her license revoked for life.
I’m a bit disturbed that Maryland has such a low cap for DUI resulting in a homicide.

ParticipantIt was on two wheels and amazing. 😮
Fairfax County has now gone the other route, and Lee Highway at Gallows road had so much sand, salt and treatment on it that the wind was causing an actual dust/debris storm. That was interesting.

Drove by Marshall to Hillcrest to Yeonas to Cottage last night and they looked ridable. A couple of patches of snow, but nothing that couldn’t be ridden around or that would take more than a minute or two to walk your bike over.
Yep my assessment too.
I can stay 100% clear of ice by going Marshall to Ware to Kingsley to Cottage so I think that is going to be my route… I have a few miles I need to make up anyway.

Yeah, I live on Oak St. and even with the studs it’s scary.
I normally cut through the roads east of Marshall Elem School to get from Nutley to Cottage to Cedar. Any advice on best route given that the smaller ones are likely super icy still?
Odds of me being able to turn left on Nutley from Kingsley and then turning right on VCB? Cause then I can just do Kingsley to Cottage.
Hoping Hilltop and Vaden are looking better than when I drove them on Tuesday evening.

Riding the fixie on 25 slicks. Great to get rid of the studs. I only had to walk two blocks to get to the nearest arterial in my neighborhood. The bike lane on Fairfax and Clarendon is not yet particularly useful.
this inspires me to believe that I can bike commute tomorrow. I will be driving home along my bike route this evening and scoping it out.
