ParticipantCustis and W&OD, as already reported this morning were a bit icy and snowy…. Very fun with the right tires. Some wonderful people plowed the section of the Custis that I rode, from the Ballston Cut-off to East Falls Church. There’s still some ice in there, but it gets better every day.
Thanks Arlington!
(Photos will be up soon…. I’m processing some video which is taking my computers computing power at the meaument.)

ParticipantBecause it couldn’t climb over the 4′ wall of ice to get onto the W&OD at Gallows Road!!!!
New blog entry to go with that: http://lovemycommute.blogspot.com/2014/02/crosswalks-and-snow-on-w-trail.html
Thanks Arlington for being AWESOME about plowing. Keep it up!!!! Y’all are leading the pack.

I did both. Ended up just buying stuff to fatten me up.

So, the W&OD was cleared, awesome! But how much of it? I can only tell around East Fall Church Metro from the photos.
I rode from Bluemont to EFC Metro. That’s all I can report on. I know that nothing has been touched beyond the Arlington County line. Falls Church and Fairfax county don’t normally do anything to clear the trail. I think Arlington can’t clear stuff under some of the underpasses, and they can’t plow over the bridges.

My camera gets me on quite a few lists.

TK sighting at the most Elite location ever – Key Bridge, both of us riding on the road.
Best place to be when the trails on each side are piled with snow and slush.

ParticipantI rode past FractionMan’s house 8 times this week. He and his family have done a lovely job of shoveling the driveways and sidewalk, though is motorcycle looks very sad.

Arlington County seems to have done a lot of trail plowing after this most recent snowstorm. I rode on clear trails at lunchtime today and had noticed coming home on Weds. evening that parts of the trails had been very lightly salted even before the storm. See also Dirt’s photos from today of some nicely plowed W&OD. Apparently the Custis was also plowed.
I made some inquiries this afternoon as to who I could thank and want to share the following list of people/offices. Notes of appreciation from a number of us might help a lot in encouraging more plowing in the future.
Caroline Temmermand, Division Chief of Parks/Rec – ctemmermand@arlingtonva.us
Kevin Stalica, Trails Manager – kstalica@arlingtonva.us
Jane Rudolph, Director of Parks/Rec – jrudolph@arlingtonva.us
Arlington DES – des@arlingtonva.us
I really want to thank YOU for doing the research. Next time I have a spare beer, it is YOURS!

Wow, no kidding. A lot more had melted by the time I came through I’m sure, but I couldn’t get over the west of the Two Sisters. I probably didn’t carry enough speed up but I really was too tired by then anyway. That was a tough commute.
The second sister was tough. Having great snow tires made it easier.

That has a bunch of photos, plus some stuff about today’s ride and conditions. I will post some around here later tonight. I need log out and spend some time away from the bike and computer.
Have a great afternoon and evening. Happy Valentines Day!!!!!

Participant15th Street Cycletrack is packed with snow and ice.
Pennsylvania Avenue is plowed, but has some huge piles of snow that force you out into the lane.
