ParticipantOneEighth was a no-show for the afternoon race. I took it in a solo break. The chick on the Trek Townie didn’t stand a chance.
Dirt
ParticipantGlad you survived to type about it.
Reason #177 why I call out “We’re all gonna die” as I ride through any major intersection in Rosslyn. Someday I’m gonna be right and some sick person will get a laugh about it.
But seriously… Thanks for the heads-up. Very happy that the helmet worked.
Ride on!

ParticipantDude, they’ve got Mavericks on sale for $4.50/pack.

ParticipantOneEighth sprints for the win of the State Inspections Performed Here Classic.
Awesome race and a well deserved win. The chick gassing up her mini van was SOOOOOoooo impressed.

PS: We’ve got to stop meeting like this. People will talk.
Dirt
ParticipantYou forgot the “Lovely spring day out: Home in 3 hours.”

ParticipantOkay. My theory was backed up today. Ran into OneEighth again… this time on the way home. He caught up to me as I limped home after intervals with the fast boys and girls at Haynes Point.
Back to my theory… It would seem that I end up riding with OneEighth through a dangerous intersection or two. That isn’t that unusual… there are plenty on the route to or from work. What is odd is that we always seem to have a “We’re all gonna die” moment in these intersections. He’d just had one a few blocks earlier when we encountered young Mr. “Officer, what turn signal do I use while backing through a crowded and busy intersection through a red light” at Columbia Pike and the W&OD. Fortunately everyone was mellow and we all had happily ever after situations.
What was I talking about? Oh yeah. My theory. The combination of me and OneEighth creates a magnet for people with questionable decision making and no multi-tasking skills while driving.
Rubber side down, sir. Nice to see you tonight.

ParticipantI’m very, very fortunate to have the ability to ride to work every day. I love living by bicycle. Maybe I’ll drive my car next year. Maybe I won’t.
Dirt
ParticipantRiding over that incident paint was creepy today. Godspeed.

I like having a little Violent Femmes in my head for the evening ride.
I went through a phase where I tried to use Femmes lyrics in every day conversation on a regular basis. I got tired of it and went on to The Talking Heads. Definitely spices up a work-related conversation.
What were we talking about? Oh yeah. Bicycle traffic monitoring. I still haven’t taken the time to look for the camera doohicky. I’ll do that on my way home. or not.
Same as it ever was.

ParticipantCoolness. I’ve got a GoPro. I think I’m gonna get a contour.
The other side benefit is that you get to work a lot faster at 3x speed.!! Helps you analyze your riding style too… make sure you ride smooth. You’re very good, by the way.

I finally noticed that there is a surveillance camera in place at the Scott Street intersection. Guess that answers the “how are they gathering data” question.
Smile! This will go down on your permanent record.
Dirt
ParticipantCool stuff! What camera are you using? Contour HD?
Your dang fast at riding.
I love the view of riding between bollards at high speed like that. “He’s gonna die! He’s gonna die! He’s gonna….. DANG he barely made it through.”
Dirt
ParticipantI’m impressed with the number of people at that intersection that actually do yield. It is kinda cool to see. I ride through there every now and then when I get fed up with how automotive society behaves.

Finally a title that I’m truly deserving of.

ParticipantHere’s a super scary thing… Same outfits… same bikes… I’m wearing different glasses. The photo is also taken in almost the exact same spot. We’re even out of focus.
At least I changed my glasses.
Thought for the day as we entered the Lynn Street Death Zone:
Pete: “We’re all gonna die!!!” (My normal battle cry when entering that intersection)
OneEighth: “I close my eyes. It seems to help.”It was a surreal commute for me today. It included road rage, the kindness of strangers, riding with a friend, beauty queens wearing evening gowns and tiaras, 8 women yelling at President Obama and a man wearing a bath towel decorated with humping hippos. I can’t wait for the ride home.
Love,
Pete
