ParticipantOh, no, so many people “disliked” the original post that it got downranked, and you have to click to view it. I guess the system interprets “dislike” differently than we do!

ParticipantMikey wins a Sierra Nevada jersey! Unless there’s a different Michael Essig competing from Virginia? I know someone with a year’s supply of toilet paper that might want to trade…

ParticipantI got to see the Canada Day celebration at the Canadian Embassy this morning! Never would have seen it if I’d been stuck in the underground tunnels. O, Canada!

ParticipantI recognized dbb & vvill as you headed south on 15th St – I was heading north. Didn’t have time for brain to process it was the roll out and say hello.

We must never have been out there at the same time. I always do.
Me too! Except for the red lights between PA Ave and the White House which say “PEDS FOR STOP,” where I don’t stop unless there are pedestrians, which I think is correct.
Also, I’m so damn slow, I’m the one that turns to you at the stop lights and asks you to go around me. Most people do, but this morning someone who looked quite a bit faster than me was happy to ride (very slowly) along behind me. I think because he was turning pretty soon after the intersection we met at; northbound 15th at K.
Actually, on my little stretch of 15th, between PA & M in the AM and L & PA in the evening, I would say 99% of cyclists stop and wait at the lights. Maybe that’s because it’s a congested area of downtown, and it’s just not safe to go through the reds there.

ParticipantSomewhat related, apparently GPS was directing people onto the Capital Crescent Trail, which is why they had to put up a gate – http://www.wjla.com/articles/2013/06/capital-crescent-trail-gated-to-prohibit-cars-90529.html You have to watch the video to see the car drivers looking very perplexed upon arriving at the new gate.

ParticipantMe: OW! OW! OW! (But less G-rated) after giving myself a nasty scratch that drew blood on the inside of my thigh on my U-Lock holder thingamabob that has somehow sharpened into a nasty point, on top of the mysterious scratch that had appeared in the same spot earlier this week.
Me: I guess that’s where I got that scratch.

ParticipantThat was fun! If the rest of the internet got together in real life periodically, think of how civilized it would be.

ParticipantI’m cautiously optimistic that I’ll be able to make this. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

ParticipantAt the presentation about the forthcoming M Street track, DDOT explained that 2-way cycle tracks aren’t optimal for one-way streets. The lights are timed for car traffic, so the contraflow cyclists end up having to stop at almost every intersection. See: light-timing for southbound cyclists on the one-way portion of 15th Street.

ParticipantLately there’s been construction taking up the lane AND the sidewalk. Last evening there was a bit of a hairy situation at L & 17th, where there was no place for pedestrians to go, so they were walking around the construction in the tiny sliver of lane that was left for bikes, forcing bikes to either stop, or merge suddenly into a heavily trafficked lane (the peds kind of popped up out of nowhere since they were hidden by the construction until they were right in front of you in the lane, so there wasn’t a lot of advance warning).
The car drivers seemed alert and understanding of the situation, but it should be a requirement that major construction like that offers clearly marked alternative routes for peds and bikes. They don’t just suddenly block a driving lane; there’s clear signage and a gradual shift to allow the cars time to merge around the obstruction. They’re going to have to start doing the same thing for our bike lanes.

ParticipantThe funny thing about this thread is that the next most active thread today, when viewed using the “What’s New” link at the top left, is “Whether to Wave:”
DC/VA riders need better culture.
Should we wave at each other?DCLiz
ParticipantWas this the NBC4 story? http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/DC-Bike-Party-Ends-in-Crash-211921711.html
DCist had an article on it yesterday; I’m guessing since it showed people engaging in illegal behavior that endangered others (in addition to themselves), the moron who posted it decided it wasn’t so funny after all, especially after it made the jump from local blogs to evening news. The organizers of Bike Party are really upset. They said that group was riding ahead of the organized ride, and ignored requests to stay to the right and stop at lights.
