There was a serious accident on H St in 2014. http://dcist.com/2014/05/cyclist_seriously_injured_by_hit-an.php

Us: Two cyclists traveling south on the 15th St Cycletrack, proceeding across H Street with the walk signal and yielding to pedestrians who ALSO have the walk signal on the southbound side of the intersection, at the White House guard station.

You: The asshat cyclist who went around us, forcing the pedestrians to stop, and causing us to have to wait even longer.

Yield to peds, jackass. (In all fairness, it is confusing that the walk signal is on in both directions, so if this was your first time biking through there, I retract the profanity…but you should still yield to peds.)

At the risk of creating thread drift, have you found a good mount? The one it came with is too large for my handlebars.

Huge thank you to the Capitol Police Officer who helped to dislodge my rear rack from my rear derailleur. The screw that attached it to my frame in the center of the wheel had come loose, and the attachment point got lodged firmly in my gears when I jostled it a bit going through the bollards.

Pro tip: check the screws on your rear rack periodically.

I’m planning on doing this. Anyone else?

It was perversely fun riding past all of the cars stuck in this morning’s downtown traffic mess due to the barricaded streets. And, at least by the time I was rolling through, cyclists were allowed on the closed streets, making for an impromptu Open Streets event.

Ah! Fantastic! I missed this news; thanks for sharing.

And I can now replace my broken key fob, which is split in two (but I managed to rescue the chip and tape it inside the fob which still allows it to work). The first time I tried to replace it, I was told my account would be deactivated until the new key arrived. Now, according to the FAQ: “While you wait for your replacement key, you can still use your membership at any station. Simply visit the station kiosk, select “Get a Bike (Member)” and dip the credit or debit card you used to sign up for your membership.” So good!

(though who bothers? it’s automatic for most!)

I think it’s only automatic for Strava? I suspect DC edges out other communities/teams on Strava usage. Old-school NBC participants like me who are still using Endomondo still have to log in to get our miles to sync.

This illustrates our approach to driver safety over the past few decades. Basically, making the cars much more safe to be in a crash, while doing almost nothing to stop them from crashing into each other in the first place (which is admittedly largely a driver issue, not an issue with the car itself).

Morning Edition had a piece last week on the different auto safety standards in Europe and the U.S. One of the differences: Europe has a standard for pedestrian safety–as in what happens when a car hits a pedestrian. Talk about priorities!

FWIW, I use Endomondo to sync my miles with NBC. I’m not sure that shows up in my profile, but every single mile in there came through Endomondo. I suspect a lot of people in NBC still do, since Strava wasn’t even an option until this year.

A belated found connection: thank you to the woman who helped me put my bike on a bus rack after the 50 States & 13 Colonies ride! I was having trouble getting the wheels lined up correctly, and an extra set of hands was much appreciated!

The bakfiets attracted even more attention than usual, which I wasn’t sure was possible.

That’s because we were trying to figure out how to get a ride in the nice dry cargo bin!

Also, how to find forum people at the Mellow Mushroom? Is there a secret hand signal? Red flowers in our hair?

Does anyone else think it’s funny that in the “Read before you ride” email, it says, “We do not distribute the cue sheet ahead of time, because that ruins the fun of the surprise.” but in the next sentence provides a link to the route, thus seemingly ruining the fun of the surprise?
