ParticipantThis morning on my way to work, I passed a cyclist surrounded by three emergency vehicles (I think two firetrucks and an ambulance) at around Penn and 6th. Did anyone see the accident? I believe I saw the cyclist standing, so hopefully no one was seriously injured. The firetruck was blocking an eastbound lane of traffic, protecting the cyclist and his stuff as he was checked out.
This was probably not a U-Turn situation, since it was at an intersection, but this seemed like the thread to post in.

It would be nice if the various regional buses let one or two park at the big pit stops for cyclists to learn how to do it during next year’s BTWD.
There has been a bus to practice on the last two years at Freedom Plaza. It’s a great idea – would be great to see at more pit stops! I never thought about having trouble loading a bike in the back slot if the front one was taken. That always seemed like it would be a possibility, though — what if there were two bikes on the rack, and then one person got off, removing their bike from the back slot (is that harder too? to remove it from the back slot when there’s a bike in the front slot?)?

ParticipantWill forum folks be meeting up at the happy hour afterwards? Would love to see you in person.

ParticipantI was just looking up DC regulations on Segways (yes, they are allowed in bike lanes). It seems that e-assist bikes are not, though. Am I reading this correctly? Does that seem odd? http://ddot.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dmv/publication/attachments/May%2017%202013%20Non-traditional%20Motor%20Vehicle%20chart.pdf

ParticipantAh OK, both of these addressed under the “Be Alert” tip (http://www.railstotrails.org/share-the-trail/be-alert/). Now I’m genuinely curious about the best way to pass a horse on bicycle! Please advise.

If you scroll down their page a bit, there should be their set of 6 trail etiquette tips. The questions were really gathered from there and you should be able to read those and figure out which were the correct answers.
I did! Which ones have to do with horses and yielding?
DCLiz
ParticipantThey don’t tell you which ones you got wrong! I’m assuming “Staying home in the rain” is not the correct answer, but I was confused about the who yields to who question and would like to know what they were going for! Or maybe I got the one about how to pass a horse wrong. Who knows?

ParticipantLeft my house near Eastern Market and didn’t hit a light until 7th & Penn. Was feeling pretty good about that until a driver made an illegal U-Turn through a line of 5 cyclists on the 1400 block of Penn. He courteously slowed down and signaled his intent to do so, so we were all able to avoid being hit.
Later on, at M & Connecticut, an ambulance was coming south down Connecticut, just as our light turned green to cross. The cyclists were the only ones who waited for the ambulance to pass. Because we’re scofflaw like that.

It’s ridiculous that news editors and reporters still call assaults like this “accidents”. Maybe just force of habit, but this was no mere accident.
To be fair, they use “incident” and “collision,” but not “accident” except where they are reporting the charges, one of which was “leaving the scene of an accident.”

ParticipantI agree, and I’m working on getting more comfortable riding without a helmet, but I think it’s nice to have the option. Some of us are clumsier/tippier/more accident-prone/more likely to run into a low-hanging tree branch than others!

ParticipantAlthough I’m VERY glad we don’t have a helmet law, I think it would be nice if we could get the helmet dispensers eventually. I personally prefer to ride with a helmet, and sometimes I choose not to take CaBi when I otherwise would have, because I don’t have a helmet with me.

ParticipantThanks … I actually disconnected Endomondo, logged out of both sites, logged back in, reconnected and still nothing. Based on comments at the NBC home page, it seems to be a widespread issue. I’ve been emailing with Meghan at NBC. I think she’s on the case!

ParticipantI signed up for Endomondo when I joined the bike challenge in 2012. At the time, that was the main app used for participation in the challenge. Yesterday, inexplicably, it stopped syncing with the challenge. My ride on Wednesday is there, and nothing has synced since.
Is anyone else having this issue?
UPDATE: It seems like this is a widespread issue, based on comments at the NBC site. I hope they fix it soon!

Spotted these bikeshare bikes in Denver. Different manufacturer obviously.
I did not ride one, but I think I might like the baskets better than the holder thingies on CaBi bikes. You wouldn’t have if you had ridden one! The B-Cycles are MUCH clunkier than Bixi-style, if you can believe that. That front end with the basket is a beast. I rode one in Austin this spring. Right before the ride someone mentioned that they weren’t as nice as Bixi bikes, and I thought, “That’s silly. A bikeshare bike is a bikeshare bike. How different can they be?” And then I got on one. It’s not just the beastliness, either…the gears didn’t work very well. I’m glad we got Bixi bikes, bankruptcy and all.

ParticipantAlright, you convinced me. I signed up for the 13 Colonies ride. We should get lots of points for the National Bike Challenge that day!
