ParticipantBike go under limbo stick…

ParticipantIf you want to avoid Maine Ave, a great detour from the 14th St bridge is to go down the internal roads on the Mall then turn south down 4th St SW. Take that all the way til you hit the wall at Fort McNair then turn left on P St SW – it takes you straight to the ballpark. Very low traffic on all segments.

ParticipantPPTC puts on the Backroads Century ride which is one of my favorite rides I’ve done lately. Great rolling terrain, beautiful scenery, and very little vehicle traffic out there. It’s in the fall.

The new trail across the Humpback bridge opened yesterday. Sweet! Even with the construction still narrowing the path, it is a real improvement over the old unprotected sidewalk.
As feared, the connection between the MVT and the path across the 14th Street Bridge still needs some work. Pretty tight turns. I will coordinate with Bike Arlington to see if it can be enhanced a bit before the construction is wrapped up.
I rode it on Friday and really liked it… I’ve heard that complaint from a few people, that the turns are too tight, but I’m not sure we’d want speeds to be higher. There’s quite a few conflicting turning movements there and it works better if everyone slows down. Unless they want to put in a bicycle roundabout…

ParticipantThis area is under NPS jurisdiction, direct your comments there.

ParticipantAs long as I can still jump the curb coming off the ramp from Rosslyn then we have no problem. It’s good to slow down before the bridge of death anyway.

Yup. According to the contractor the intention is to make the right hand lane parking, and you have to walk across the cycletrack to feed the meter. That’s an accident waiting to happen.
That design actually works well in New York and other places because there is a physical 3-4 ft buffer between the parked cars and the off-street cycletrack when vehicle passengers can offload and let doors swing open. We won’t have that here…
DaveK
ParticipantWait, they’re putting the meters back IN the cycletrack?

ParticipantThere’s an alternate way around via the Route 50 service road to the Route 50 trail (a sidewalk, really), but it’ll seem pretty bad to someone who’s used to riding through the base. Other options include following 27 down to Columbia Pike from Memorial Bridge area.

Well, I don’t ride quite as much as you, but it’s also possible that I got lucky with a good set. And with that, I’ve pretty much guaranteed a flat or two soon…
My city tires are Michelin Krylion Carbon in 700×23 – I’ve had one flat in ~2,500 miles I’ve had them on and that’s riding almost all on city streets in the District and Arlington. Plus they have red stripes which makes my bike faster.

ParticipantOn my road bike I ride in the lane on 15th St, on a CaBi I take the cycletrack. In the lane I act like a car, in the cycletrack I follow the ped signals. the cycletrack is something new to most folks but it’s very clearly signed and marked as to what you should be doing.

ParticipantStill closed but the work looks almost finished. They’ve built two new “bridges” on the northbound (east) side. Knowing absolutely nothing about the project I hope it’ll be done this week.

ParticipantDC streets are clear, no worries about snow or ice. I’ve been fine on road tires on the streets for about a week. See Mark’s post for sage advice otherwise. Be careful if you’re coming from VA or another trail system to get there though, there may still be small patches here and there.
DaveK
ParticipantFrom rosslyn to Veitch st the trail is mostly dry and clear, with the exception of a couple of icy patches where you’ll have to get off and walk. They’re small though.
DaveK
ParticipantClosed. Doesn’t look like it will be open anytime soon.
