There’s a decent used bike market at the Courthouse Metro stop on Saturday/Sunday’s. There’s another one at Eastern Market, too (but can’t recall their hours). There’s also Phoenix Bikes in Arlington (but not terribly Metro accessible, unless you like buses). They operate on Thurs, Sat & Sun, iirc.

Also, check with Revolution Cycles’ City Hub in Crystal City and see what they might be willing to work out. Definitely cheaper than CaBi, for your purposes.

There used to be a guy selling bikes up until about a year ago at Eastern Market but he got thrown out for selling hot bikes. At least that’s what I was told by another merchant. There’s someone now who has a couple of bikes there each weekend but nothing I’d let a friend buy. Looks like he pulled them out from a dumpster and just put them up for sale. The Courthouse market guys are much better, they actually clean up the bikes and make them ready to ride. They are only there on Saturday these days and go to a market in DC on Sundays (Georgetown, I think).

Doesn’t Papillon Cycles sell used bikes?

W&OD is owned and controlled by NVRPA (Northern Virginia Regional Parks Authority).

He let me get away with a solid trackstand, but he was certainly watching.

Here’s a good question though…. At Old Reston (by 7-11) there’s both a stop sign, and a walk light. If the walk light is lit do you have to stop?

A signal is a higher level control than a stop sign – the signal should be obeyed. In many places (don’t know about VA) it’s explicit in the state code that stop signs shall not be located at intersections where there is a traffic light. I’d look this up before trying it in a courtroom.

I’ll come if I’m in town. Always meant to check out Jays but I’m never in Arlington after hours. I may wear my Groucho mask just in case.

Hains Point Park in DC has a pool, and is a great place to get some laps in on the bike afterwards.

The Washington Lee High School Pool in Arlington is right off the Custis Trail with connectivity to the W&OD or Mt. Vernon trail.

And if you get in a short run afterwards, that would make for some nice little triathlon training!

Eastern Market in DC has a public indoor pool – on a weekend you can also hit the market for all kinds of lunch options. Nice easy ride from Arlington also that takes you down the National Mall.

I really hope there’s packaging involved. I won’t even get into that peanut butter and jelly sandwich I tried to assemble between two rest stops on the Back Roads Century.

Do you mean the penny-farthing guy? I saw him riding on the Mt. Vernon Trail last summer. Apparently he rode that bike at the Air Force Cycling Classic-Crystal Ride last year. It’s possible that it really is his daily ride.

There’s a p-far often locked up in our garage bike room at my office. Not going to name names but I’ll bet it’s the very same. I’ve also been behind someone on the CCT riding a p-far on his cell phone.

Just want to echo someone earlier in the thread – most people don’t realize just how important strength training is for losing weight. Lean muscle burns more calories than fat when you’re just sitting at your desk. Plus the only way to “tone up” as a lot of people say is through strength training. You won’t get bigger unless you make an effort to do so, but you will feel stronger, look better, and burn more calories in all your daily activities.

If you have the option of swimming or biking I would say do both. Alternate so your body doesn’t get too used to one or the other. Changing the tasks your muscles are asked to perform will improve your strength and endurance.

Also it is very important – biking must never, ever be immediately preceded by a swim or followed by a run. These are the rules (see Rule 42) and must be obeyed without question.

    Good luck!

Honestly, I expect to come into DC via Alexandria early on Friday, but I’ll be easy enough to spot if I do make it to Rosslyn—black, unmarked fixie with bullhorns wrapped with white tape and a white saddle. Probably wearing a white short-sleeved jersey with a big black stripe down each sleeve.
    Holler if you see me.

Was having a conversation as I was going up Custis so it didn’t register right away, but I bet that was you coming down towards Rosslyn about a half hour ago. We were leaving after the Rosslyn pit stop closed up shop – silver helmet, blue shirt, green Cross Check.

Hahaha…. I guess that has me firmly planted in limbo. I love steel, ti, aluminum, scandium, carbon and bamboo. I’ve ridden and enjoyed them all. I currently own each except for bamboo. I need to fix that.

There’s plenty of carbon in my house, but I’m just saying, if the Devil took one less car to his fiddle duel he’d show up on a carbon bike.

I’m hearing so many complaints about CaBi and I’m stunned. I’ve been using it for a month and have had a great experience. I live near Lincoln Park and have had to ride to 3rd & D when the station is full. I’ve waited 3 minutes twice for bikes to show when none were there but 3 minutes is still far less time then I would have waited for the bus.

There is constantly a CaBi van at the Lincoln Park station rebalancing bikes. In the last month CaBi announced the addition of a 3rd rebalancing van and additional smaller vehicles and last week Spotcycle announced their app will update every minute instead of every five, making dock availability more reliable.

I think people are over reacting a bit with some of their complaints. The system has been open for just under 7 months and has seen a doubling in that time. Is it a perfect system? No, but considering the complexity and the fact that they do seem to be rapidly trying to both expand and iron our the kinks claiming the system is a failure is overboard.

I posted on the CaBi facebook page last night but I’m starting to get fed up with it lately. I’ve been a member since early on and have never had issues until recently. My wife and I have tried to use CaBi four times together since she got her membership a couple of weeks ago. Only once has it worked out that we both could pick up a bike from where we were and ride to where we intended. Last night was what pushed my buttons enough to post… we were coming home to the Eastern Market area and all three stations near our house (Eastern Market, 4th & East Cap, Lincoln Park) were full. This was at 9:30pm, not during the evening rush. We aren’t CaBi commuters and just wanted to get home. I’m having a very hard time convincing her CaBi is a great as I’ve always said it is.

I’ve got their (very similar) touring bike, the Long Haul Trucker, and love it. My only complaint is the bar-end shifters that both models come with standard. I occasionally bump into them with my knees when mounting/dismounting at stop lights, or bump them into things when leaning the bike against a rack to lock up. I think I’m going to stick with regular shifters in the future, but other than that, big fan.

That’s why my CC is under the knife right now getting new integrated shifters. If I ever finish it (sorry honey, I’ll give the living room back soon).

The CC is a Swiss Army knife of bikes, you can do anything with it. It’ll be faster than your entry-level hybrid but every time I get on my road bike from the CC I feel like I’ve strapped on rocket boosters. I look at it as improving my climbing skills. If you are looking for something to go on longer, faster rides I would keep looking at road bikes unless “longer and faster” includes places like the C&O towpath. You’ll be happier on the road with a road bike.

Just responding to say how much I like these videos, especially of my home bike lanes on the Hill.
