ParticipantThe only thing I have to add that hasn’t been covered already is that the open path around the Washington Monument on the north side is entirely hard-packed snow and ice. It’s rideable on 32s without studs if you’re careful.

So what’s your alternative? It seems to me like the only bridge you can get to without going on a trail is Key, and even there you’ll want to cross on the sidepath…
I rode through the city up Pennsylvania to M Street and the Key Bridge. I had no trouble taking the lane on the bridge, although I heard somewhere (maybe twitter?) that the sidepath on one side had been cleared. Remember I’m also going against traffic. I’d do it though even if I was going in with traffic. Got to pay those bills…

The streets were not bad. Slushy with the occasional lump of ice, but fine on 25’s. Just gotta be willin to take as much of the lane as necessary.
The sidewalk going across the bridge into Gtown looked partially cleared but also pretty bumpy. I took the road.Ditto to the above. Streets are fine. I didn’t even attempt my normal commute which would include the Memorial Bridge sidepath and the 110 trail connector around the cemetery. I expect that to be impassable for at least a week…

The island near RFK? Benning rd bridge in the background?
Rode by there with dcv a couple weeks ago and wondered what was across that wooden bridge. We rode a loop of the RFK GP Course instead of being adventurous.
It’s just kind of empty. It gets used for festival space like the Kingman Island Bluegrass Fest every year. There’s also a hobo camp if you turn right on the island and head south until the trail ends. But don’t do that…

ParticipantIt’s like every new thing at National Harbor is in competition for being the worst. Outlets, casino, now this. The saving grace is that the cranky old NIMBYs on the Old Town waterfront will be apoplectic with rage.

ParticipantI’d love to be able to actually do this this year… we’ll see what’s going on around that time but it’s on my calendar.

ParticipantStuck in my head forever. Thanks, jerks.
On topic, and with apologies to Michael Pollan:
Wear clothes. Not too many, mostly wool.

Ditto. I was too warm. Bring on the negative temps…
Also I saw 10 other bicyclists today! Well done, DC.

This is a good point — one of the moms on the C&O trip had a step through hybrid bike (yep, she rode all 184 miles on it — talk about ELITE) and we couldn’t fit it on our rack or any of the other vehicles’ racks. We had a pickup truck at our disposal for ferrying bikes both ways so it was not a problem for us, but if this is a consideration for you, keep it in mind.

Roads in DC were SO MUCH BETTER than roads in Arlington this morning, even with my late commute. The trail by the reflecting pool was even clear. The trail along the Memorial Bridge was the worst part of my whole commute — very icy, and DaveK’s tire ruts made me slip all over the place
I did manage to be very hot for the entire ride, which is a WIN in my book.
I didn’t ride on the Memorial Bridge sidewalk this morning, I took the lane on the bridge since I had to come from Constitution Ave after bailing off the Washington Monument paths. Actually it wasn’t bad at all.

ParticipantRoads are fine, the only time I was off them was on the 110 connector trail by Arlington Cemetery. It’s rideable right now, crunchy with about 1/2″ of powder but good traction. It will not be rideable tomorrow.
DaveK
ParticipantThat was a most enjoyable morning of bicycling.

Less than 2,000 this year but a lot of injuries, health issues, and a cross country move. I’m shooting for 3,500 miles in 2014 with touring rides to Duluth (165 miles) and Fargo (245 miles) this summer.
I’d love to see a post about life and bikes in the great white North sometime. What’s different, better, worse… I’ve heard a lot of good things about biking up there.
