Nope, at least not in Germany. The vast majority of cycling infrastructure that I’ve seen is shared with pedestrians so there isn’t much buffer. What you have a lot of are sidewalks the width of the W&OD with about two and a half feet marked for bikes. Both bikes and pedestrians will generally respect that. Your second point is better.
Not all of Germany – in Berlin, it’s mostly bikes-only and peds-only.

They seem bent on repaving the worst sections every couple of years, letting areas that suck a little less slide until they are the worst, then repaving them. To be fair, this was a bigger job, as your pics from the project attest. Also, the Custis could sit untouched for a decade and still be better than the majority of the MVT, so I shouldn’t complain.
This is a budgetary problem. Next time you see an elected official, tell them it’s important to fund capital maintenance of the trails at a level to fix trails before they fail — roughly double what they fund now.

A little late to this party but I will throw my .02 in here. I fully support scooters and e-bikes and want to see them in the bike lanes. Anything we can do to increase demand for “alternative transportation lanes” makes them more viable for the community. And scooters and e-bikes offer transportation to people that dont have or dont want access to cars. Yes the riders dont follow the law all the time and that is unfortunate. The same is true for drivers of large gas powered vehicles and that is unfortunate too.
Some people are a$$hats and they will be a$$hats on whatever tool they have available to them. Not news, and not a reason to be against escooters generally, in my book.

ParticipantI think the passing buffer (distance between the person passing and the person being passed) should increase as the difference in the speeds between the passer and the passee increases. If you’re just going a bit faster than the passee, passing within a smaller space is more comfortable. Also, the more people bike, the more comfortable they are being passed with a smaller buffer.
That’s why I think it works in Europe — those bike lanes/trails are only bikes, so the difference is speeds is smaller than you have on our trails (which have the range from people walking to people biking fast). Plus, people bike a lot more. Both point to smaller passing buffers being more acceptable over there.

ParticipantIt is very easy to tow one or two bikes on a longtail, especially with a hooptie/monkey bars.

ParticipantNo, this hasn’t been discussed at the BAC.

And… further down where they’re doing construction they’ve put out a cooler with free water, and a sign apologizing for the inconvenience.
Not sure I’d complain myself.
Man, this looks like great signage. After 2 weeks of emails, we can’t get DPR to correct the paltry signage for the McCoy Park work. #SMH

ParticipantMy map will give you a lower stress route. If you don’t mind it, just take the lane then bike lane westbound on Lee Hwy westbound (that’s what I do).

Lots and lots of dangerous stuff going on on N. Adams and the north-side Lee sidewalk each morning, unfortunately. Most people are electing to cyclocross carry the stairs, which is fine, but then about 50% are salmoning down the east side of N. Adams to hang a (blind) left onto the Lee Highway sidewalk. Of the remaining 50%, about half of them are riding down the right side of Adams most of the way, then electing to swing across in the intersection. Only a matter of time before someone gets pancaked by the MD-plated Uber drivers that rip around that corner.
For eastbound riders, the logical “legitimate” solution for those who want to walk the stairs is to take 20th east to where it ends on 21st/Veitch, then take 21st, which turns into Scott, thereby bypassing the secondary detour that is being put into place now. There is not a similar solution for westbound riders because of the one-way signage on 20th.
For all riders, the “pragmatic” solution which of course cannot be “officially” recommended, due to the involvement of private property, is to simply use the Potomac Towers parking lot access drive (which is effectively a two-lane road and handles an impressive amount of traffic daily) to cut from Adams to 21st/Veitch.
This is a tricky section to detour but I do hope that we get through the work without a major incident or injury. The County’s “official” detour is well-intended, but my suspicions that adoption would be low have been confirmed by the masses seen carrying and riding on N. Adams each day (which is great, provided everyone keeps it safe).
Interesting. Adams is part of the official detour for westbound cyclists…. Anyway, it’s a bad situation, any way you slice it. That detour sign that blocks half the sidewalk on the NE corner of Veitch and Lee is my personal least favorite.

That’s nothing compared to Metro’s plan to reduce Orange/Silver/Blue line trains to every 20 Minutes(16 Minutes for Blue line) during rush hour for two weeks, starting August 11.

In Virginia, there is debate on whether or not an e-bike is considered a motor vehicle and therefore not allowed on the trails.
So in Virginia, it’s clear they are NOT motor vehicles and VA law allows them on trails; the debate is whether ArlCo (most trails; almost certainly not), NVRPA (W&OD Trail; pretty definitely not), or NPS (Mt Vernon Trail; probably) can have a different law. Not that it matters.

A pedestrian was killed at this intersection either earlier this month or late last month. I use this ramp on my commute to work. Despite the much better signage, it’s still confusing to a lot of drivers that the right lane is right turn only in the mornings during rush hour. And I’m sure some drivers know but just ignore it. Would be great if you could have a cop directing traffic.
Police direct traffic in Rosslyn in the mornings, so it wouldn’t be unprecedented. Please let ACPD know what you saw and any suggestions you have — police@arlingtonva.us

Hey team, a friend was hit by a car this morning on the way in. She seems fine but shaken up, a driver right hooked her at the Key Bridge Marriott parking entrance on Lee. She got the driver info but didn’t call the police. I thought I saw a thread with accident advice, can someone send link? She rode the rest of the way to work, just called the police and they said they won’t make a report unless she goes to a hospital? thx
ACPD should take a report whenever asked. If she calls back and they won’t send an officer, please have her email me – bike [dot] gillian [at] gmail – and I’ll connect her with the correct person. By reporting it, she’ll be helping the next folks.
I’ve long thought that Arlington should get Marriott to close that entrance and route cars through the light at Nash.
