Has this happened to anyone else? This was at a Metro bike rack yesterday–someone inadvertently locked their bike to mine.

I was feeling generous, so I walked home (3/4 mile) and came back later to find the guy reading my note (which asked him to send me a text). Funny thing is: the same thing happened to him a couple of weeks ago, and he wondered how anyone could be so careless. :) He apologized, and no harm done.

I tried to see how far up the W&OD these markings went on my ride home today. The last ones I remember seeing were in Falls Church. I agree that they’re directional markings. When the < is pointing to the side, it seems to mean there is a turn coming up. My best guess is that the w stands for Washington and is directing riders downtown. It makes me think of my first attempt riding to work about 2 years ago. When I crossed Lee Hwy on the Custis Trail bridge I wasn’t quite sure where I was and how far I needed to go. I thought I might need to get off the trail at one of the many “off ramps” before it took me south into Arlington. Of course I was all wrong, but what I noticed is a lack of signage for the obvious destination of downtown DC. There are other signs along the trail which point to closer points of interest, such as communities, Metro stations and parks, but none for DC destinations. Has this been discussed already?

You’re probably right. At least in Vienna you can point to one of the many “Share the road” signs if someone starts complaining.

I think what gets lost in the “us vs. them” debate is that we’re talking about a person who is usually just getting from point A to point B. One happens to be in a car, and one happens to be on a bike. It’s the bad eggs that are most memorable, so everyone of a certain mode (as in transportation) gets painted with the same brush. (Stop me if I’m stating the obvious here.)

We all meet up in public spaces where a little empathy goes a long way. Without it, you’ll probably succumb to road rage. So do yourself a favor, and next time think about the person in the car or on the bike who just cut you off or whatever. I usually feel sorry for them, because they’re probably having a bad day. *stepping off soap box*

There was one positive thing about Milloy’s article: I had no idea that a bike escalator was being discussed for 15th Street bike lane north of V Street.

I now know what it is!

I’m sure this guy doesn’t have to think twice about what the best part of the ride was …

    East Falls Church (evening)

The Good: Well… It was there

The Bad: An empty table and a volunteer pointedly packing up t-shirts half an hour prior to the posted end time.

Maybe I was expecting too much. Since other bike shop sponsored pit stops offered bike maintenance, I was expecting it there, too. I know my bike chain could sure use a lube after biking to work in all that rain, and I probably stretched my brake cables a bit. I was also hoping to grab a snack for the final stretch to Vienna, but the only edible swag (still not sure you can say that) was the gummy multi-vitamins that Gold’s Gym was handing out there. And no, I didn’t eat them.

Stopped at Merrifield on the W&OD where they were well-stocked with edible swag. (Can you call it that?) Especially appreciated the large Gatorade and the caffeine gels.

Then Falls Church where I only saw one other biker during my short stay. Thanks to the group at Bikenetic for the $20 gift card for the few and faithful!!

I went down the hill from the trail at the East Falls Church Metro and looked down Sycamore St, but I didn’t see the pit stop, so I kept going. Wish I would’ve looked harder. That “I bike to Metro and Metro to work” t-shirt looks pretty neat.

Rosslyn has all the good reflector stuff (thanks, Bike Arlington), but no flashy lights this year …

Breezed by the Georgetown Meigs Park stop, because all I saw was a vacant tent.

Sounds like next year I’ll have to swing by Nat Geo, too.

Saw this right before the Lee Hwy bridge over I-66.

Then I stayed at the Rosslyn pit stop too long and got the chills. Thank goodness for the warm shower at work!

    Saw this on arlnow.com today.

Is this what we should be expecting for tomorrow?

I think that guy must be 6′-6″. I’m the one standing right next to him.

It’s late, I’m going to get my SCUBA gear.

    From BTWD website:
Bike to Work Day is a rain or shine event! All pit stops will be open regardless of the weather. It’s strongly encouraged to pack rain gear, just in case.

The bad part is there won’t be as many people participating; the good part is that there will be more swag for those of us who do ride. 😎

Yes, I’ll be stopping at the Falls Church pit stop around 6:30.

I want to hook up with a convoy, too, but the Route 4 convoy out of FC isn’t starting at the pit stop! Oh well, maybe I’ll meet them where they turn onto the W&OD.
