ParticipantJust signed up, too, after sitting on the fence for quite a while. As is usually the case year round, I am sure my riding will be limited almost exclusively to my daily commute (i.e., probably won’t be able to go for any of the special challenges), but I do my commute year round five days a week as long as I’m working, so hopefully I’ll be an asset to my team…

Reason: And now the song is stuck in your head, too.
Thanks, me too. Actually, I don’t mind. It’s a good song. As long as it’s not stuck for days, I’ll be happy.

ParticipantTwo from this AM w/in about 1/8 of a mile of each other.
You: Driving a white Chevy Impala south on Potomac Avenue just on the Alexandria side of 4MR with your left blinker on.
Me: Thinking, “Hey, your blinker is on, and there’s nowhere to turn left for at least 1/4 mile, and I strongly doubt that you’re going to see a movie at 7:30 AM, which means no left turns for over a mile. You’d be more likely to realize it was on if you weren’t head down staring at your phone while driving.” Also glad I was not on your side of the road. #distracteddrivingYou: The Alexandria PD cop that had a speeder pulled over on Potomac Ave by South Glebe presumably for a speed infraction in Alexandria’s jurisdiction.
Me: Thanks!cyclingfool

That was me.
Nice to put a distant profile of a person on a bike with a forum screen name. (a la nice to put a face with a name)

That grass and those turns were SLICK this morning. Great fun!
I saw lots of mud with tire tracks through it under the CSX bridge IIRC. Looked like it would have been squirrelly through there.

My wife says I have already “dorked it up” by putting the rack on the back, and it doesn’t have its fenders yet! Such is the life of a commuter…
IMHO, it’s not a bike UNTIL it has fenders and at least a rear rack.
On my commute in this AM, I saw someone still out on the Gravelly Point CX course as I rode past around 7:45. Appeared to be the last person out. Hope you all had fun!

ParticipantGreat ride in this morning. I was clipped in again for the first time since my bike was stolen in the spring, thanks to the gift of new SPD pedals from my wife for one of our anniversaries last night.
Hooray, hooray, hooray for SPDs! Felt nice to be even more connected to the bike again.
(I had just been using an old pair of Nashbar MTB cage pedals I had kicking around with plastic toe clips and straps on them since they were functional and I had other uses for the occasional $30-40 to spend on stuff for the new rig.)

ParticipantThe only sub-zero conditions I see in the next week’s worth of forecasts are at night… in Celsius. Heat wave continues. 😎

Q: What do 13-year-old jewish boys on bikes use to keep their hands warm?
A: Bar Mittsvahs!
It’s posts like these that keep me reading threads I otherwise have only passing tangential personal interest in. Well played, sir. Well played. 😎

Was rather warm. Last night the forecast said it would be 34°, it wasn’t, and I was way over dressed.
Indeed. Much warmer than advertised. Sucked to have to come back to work this morning after the nice long weekend, but since 95% of my cycling miles come from commuting, at least I’m riding again!
Though to be honest, I did get out on Friday just for funsies to burn off some Turkey Day calories with my son in tow… it was a nice 15 mile ramble around Alexandria.

To the driver that insisted on driving full speed through the huge puddle on Thomas Ave between the Reagan-National economy parking lot and the MVT (Milepost 13), thanks for the shower last night, made me really appreciate my rain cape. 😡
Been there. That sucks.

ParticipantWere it not for the 25 mph headwind, this would have gone down as one of the best commute mornings of the fall. I liked the clouds and the lack of rain. It was way nicer than I had expected when I last looked at the forecast yesterday.
Of course my rosy view of the commute today was probably colored by the fact that I was back on a bike and not sitting idly on a metrorail car. Thank you, Bruce! The bike rides like new!
EDIT: I meant to note that, like others, I saw only two other people on bikes this morning on my ride in, and I didn’t see them until I got all the way to the 14th St Bridge, where I also saw the results of what must have been quite a wreck, with an SUV on its side facing the wrong way with a smashed up windshield in the exit ramp to go from 395 south to GWP towards the airport. There were five or six police cars, an ambulance, and a firetruck still on the scene. Snarled traffic heading into VA, cuz you know, no one is trying to get to the airport today. The traffic there was quite the contrast to the relatively lonely commute I was experiencing.

Participant^^^^^Hilarious! How did I not see that the first time?! Reminds me of the video with the bear.
I think the cycling head might be Holly from Red Dwarf.
As for pedaling, e-bike?

another thing to watch out for is people that have not turned off their lawn/garden sprinklers for the winter. Yesterday morning the path/sidewalk around the Key memorial pocket park ark (DC side) was full of icy patches (and the shrubbery covered by a beautiful, but probably deadly, icy glaze)
Did someone say “shrubbery”?!
