That intersection is indeed really bad with bad pavement, sharp turns, bad to no sight lines that get worse during summer due to vegetation, a hill, and no clear indication of ROW. I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often. Hopefully that goes to show that most of us aren’t a-holes like this guy and are willing to slow down to figure out the situation before plowing through people.

In the afternoons I come up 4MR and make the U-turn up the ramp to Rt 1. I always signal that, and I’ve seen others do it too, but it’s difficult to see around the bend to the left to see if anyone is going to come down 4MR and up the ramp. Who would have the ROW in that situation anyway? Even simple situations like going down the ramp to do the left U-turn to 4MR aren’t easy because when a bike is coming eastbound on 4MR, it’s not clear who should yield and I’ve had a couple, “you go, no you go, no you go” situations. From that scenario it’s also difficult to if anyone is coming westbound from under the bridges. Terrible design.

Throw some pedestrians and joggers into that mix and it’s a mess.

Everyone in northern Alexandria watch out for a D-bag in a BMW with the VA license plate ND 85. The ND is for Notre Dame. The dick gave me just inches during a close pass along Potomac Avenue southbound. While I had the opportunity I decided to confront him when I saw him park along Custis Ave.

He didn’t say anything. Barely acknowledged my existence. Just kinda seemed like a robot. The worst part was, my video camera ran out of memory just a few minutes before this incident so I didn’t record it.

Anyway, F*&k Notre Dame forever. I’ll probably see this dick again as I ride that road often.

I’m in for next year! I can’t do freezing saddles so it will be something to look forward to.

I didn’t officially join for this year, but I have now done 11 200K+ rides so far this year and my goals will be similar for next season. Nice idea!

Dude in the Subaru going west on I St. toward South Capitol St.

Yep. I was taking the lane because as usual someone parked in the bike lane in front of the apartments. Interesting that you felt the need to race around me giving me much less than 3 ft at that spot. The light at South Capitol was red, and you immediately had to stop for the line of traffic that backed up past McD’s. I hope you realize you were acting like a douche, but I doubt it. That’s why I let you know to be doubly sure. Best part is, given how far back you were in the traffic and how backed up the ramps to 395 were, I highly doubt you even made it through the next green light.

If you do, be sure to also vote against Silberberg who couldn’t even be bothered to reply to the questions.

Ok, now that Silv*erberg is officially the new mayor – do we know why she didn’t answer the questions? I can think of a million reasons, one of which could be “couldn’t be bothered”, but it might help to know the real reason or best guess from someone in the know. Maybe she was actually saving puppies from drowning while out re-paving a bike path and was too busy?

Holy crap there was a buttload of traffic this morning in SE. Why would there be so much more traffic this week vs last week? The time change shouldn’t affect traffic. Anyway, the side roads were all packed with drivers trying to avoid the main roads because they were choked with cars. Fortunately for me, I was going the other way.

Years ago, someone told me that if you see a cyclist out on the road, chances are it’s someone who has had their license suspended for DUI, and that person is likely cycling drunk.

Someone actually told me that. :(

So the obvious next question is: Where did you punch this person? I’m guessing either the nose, or a slap to the side of the head.

Perhaps I’m a pessimist, but I don’t think bans will do much for someone who shows no respect for the law. I mean, she was already banned from driving drunk, and that didn’t seem to stop her. I suppose one could argue that she has an addiction, which I think is a very real thing, and that treating that addiction would help to rectify the situation. But I wonder, what if it doesn’t work? What’s stopping her from renting a car and driving drunk? I mean, she was clearly told before never to drive drunk again, and she did, during the daytime, and in a crowded area.

Yes, you can assume that most of these people would try to drive with suspended or revoked licenses anyway. But in these most recent cases, the women are not anti-society, holed up in a drug den, Whitey Bulger like gang bangers. They’re generally law abiding people, except for the whole drinking, driving, and then killing somebody thing.

Assuming you’re trying to fit into normal society and your license has been suspended or revoked, if you’re going to break the law and drive you’re more likely to drive really well because if you get pulled over for anything you’re going to be arrested, not just cited. And the penalties would be big fines and possibly more jail time. So out of fear of being arrested everywhere they go, I’d like to think they would eventually end up ditching the car. Sure it would be a massive hassle for them, but I don’t see it making the roads less safe.

Northbound Commonwealth Ave. in Alexandria is milled for repaving, between Monroe and Uhler. They’ve left the bike lane intact where there is a bike lane, but be careful in the section that’s just sharrows.

Also, does anyone know if/when southbound Commonwealth Ave. will be repaved? It’s also in bad shape.

Yay! There’s no way that section was going to survive the winter as a paved road. It was a little freeze-thaw + some snow plow trips away from reverting to pot-holed gravel suitable for only 4WDs.

    Seriously….

I’m interested in getting more traction for removal of a driver’s license for LONG periods of time for serious DUI/distracted driving offenses. Like, why will this EX-bishop be allowed to drive after she gets out of prison? She’s proven that she has no sense of responsibility. Maybe that should be part of probation too. NO DRIVING! I think we can easily show that prison is ineffective at changing behavior, but maybe living out in the real world without your precious car would be better.

What’s the best way to start?? Probably the best place would be in a liberal small state like Massachussetts or Vermont, or a city with good mass transit, and then other cities or states would fall in line…. It can’t be hard to find a politician who isn’t afraid to stand up to the drunk driving lobby. I mean come on.

This drunk wench who killed the 2 cyclists down near Chesapeake Beach, should never be allowed to drive again. How do I make that happen??

Maybe we should petition for speed bumps to be added to the bike path.

Adding little ramps to jump off of makes me think that more elevation and in turn, fun, would make this intersection a lot more safe.

We have to think in 3D, people.

    This is so complicated.

But it’s not that complicated… it’s a frickin bike lane. How is this so controversial? Because the church is making it complicated by making it a fight over a MUCH bigger deal that has very little to do with some paint stripes. The old white people in Wherever, CA made ridiculous arguments against bike lanes recently too and we all laughed at them. Why are we suddenly forced to feel bad because some church may lose some (illegal anyway) parking spots?

Strip away the anger and the constitutional rights BS and all you have is DDOT wants to put in a bike lane. No one has said that the church goers can’t park all over the place like they do already anyway.

Goddamnit…. as I’m wearing more layers with the chilly weather I have forgotten to hang them all up so they dry while at work. Ugh… starting a chilly commute home in cold, damp clothing sucks.

I thought this thread was for ranting about incidents and numbskulled users of roads and trails? Not thoughtful discussions about driverless car technology and whether it will in fact be safer for the rest of us.

Anyway, getting REALLY tired of the ninja joggers on the MVT in the vicinity of the airport and especially north of gravelly point where there is no ambient light.

To ninja #1 – Oh you didn’t like it when I beamed you in the eyes with my headlight? Well maybe if you wore something, ANYTHING bright colored or reflective, let alone use a blinky light while running at night I wouldn’t have to illuminate your whole body to see you coming at me.

To ninja #2 – Yep I almost hit you today. I was coming up behind a jogger with a reflective vest and a blinky light which caught my attention, and was difficult to see around. Because of those lights in my eyes when I moved over to pass him, I honestly didn’t see you coming until it was almost too late. Perhaps that was because you were wearing dark clothes…. at night! In the end I had to slam on the brakes because I still hadn’t gotten around the jogger on my side yet when you suddenly appeared. Nice job dude. You deserve everything that’s coming to you.

The perception here is that it’s a bunch of white yuppies who just moved in and want to displace the older residents. Protests won’t change that view, but parents with kids might.

The “won’t someone think of the children” argument? That only works with pornography and cigarettes.

    Best of luck anyway!
