So DATC (Duck Air Traffic Control) is slipping too. Yesterday morning, three ducks were sitting in a big puddle near gravely point, not far from the trail. Another duck came in for a landing. All looked safe for me to keep biking on the trail since the landing path was parallel to the trail. That duck lands and the other three take off, two nearly into me – I had to duck for one duck and grab my brakes for the other. I am very surprised that no one got hit.

Tell me you yelled “Duck!” when you almost got hit by a duck but ducking was what saved you from that ducking duck! That’s like the absolute most perfect time to yell that word ever.

Just observe anyone vaping and watch the cloud of vapor that they have exhaled to see how far it goes. Way farther than 6ft.

Also, I pity the fool who’s standing downwind of anyone who’s infected and outside yesterday/today.

    Me: “Oh Shiiiiii***”, grab brakes
You: continue running and becoming airborne across the trail, just where my bicycle would have been had I not grabbed my brakes
Me: Phew! and continue on my ride.

I would have thought that Canada Goose Air Traffic Control would have been essential personnel, but maybe they’re teleworking from Roach’s Run these days.

I’ve been thinking about drafting etiquette, in general, and in the time of COVID19. It seems to me that the drafter is the one at risk not the draftee. A drafter is somewhat close and in line for inhaled fluids/germs from the rider in front. I can’t see where the reverse is true. Even a drafter’s snot rocket can’t fly against the wind to endanger the rider in front. There may be good reasons to discourage someone from drafting you, but I don’t think fear of contagion is one.

I agree with this analysis… and any drafter should be aware of how snotty I can be. Especially in cold weather. I have a lot of snot.

However this is not the reason why I hate drafters.

You can say “Good morning” or the like, and “Mind if I draft for a minute?”

And what will you do when my answer is a resounding “NO”?

How about just don’t draft? 1-2 bike lengths back should be enough if you need to hang out, but other than that man/woman up to fight the headwind (if there is one) yourself.

The cap last year was ridiculous. Me commuting even 4 days/week amounts to >100 miles. Why should I be penalized for doing exactly what FS is all about? You want more points? Ride more!

This scoring system is definitely preferred, but could be tweaked (again). 20 points for 1 mile? That seems excessive. I rode every day one year. It was ok, but I got to feeling like 1 mile rides were silly so I hardly did any this year. When I did it was to check whether my home maintenance was adequate.

I don’t really have any useful suggestions, but I do like the idea of having multiple leaderboards for teams and individuals. Like how about a straight up mileage one? I’d like to see where I stack up among the people for whom mileage counts. Other leaderboards would enable people to focus on other things and maybe work their way into top 10 positions etc…

Whatever is decided, we can’t thank enough the people who put all the time and energy into developing the website, programming the data collection “things”, sorting through all the entries and assigning teams. Thanks to all, your hard work is very much appreciated!

    Dear white trash mini-van driver,

SANFORD STREET IN DEL RAY IS 2 WAYS! Do not, in your ghetto-ass 1990s shit-mobile, drive straight at me because you can’t figure which side of the goddamn road to drive on!

I’ve had a lot of close calls in the past few years but this one was one of the scariest… well after my heart-rate dropped back down to a reasonable level I almost wished you had clipped me and stopped because I think stomping on your neck would have made me feel better.

I commute this way and am always worried I will get a flat here. Due to both this sign and all the loose gravel/glass.

Me too! There’s always so much shattered glass and debris in this area and all throughout SE DC. I don’t get it. On top of that this goddamn construction sign has been pissing me off too. Below is what it looked like after a windy day recently… I’ve also stopped a couple of times to push it father into the street because DDOT keeps leaving it where it fully blocks the sidewalk. Morons….

I cannot wait until the new bridge is completed.

I was thinking this morning while riding in the rain about proposing we change this year’s title to Seattle Saddles, since it definitely feels more like Seattle weather than winter.

The poll is confusing, the order of the options is not the same when looking at the result as shown in your picture. I selected the same option as you(the one with the check mark).

The order of the choices was different when I did the poll vs when my wife did. I wonder if it’s its an attempt to dissuade someone from setting up a robot or some sort of macro to vote 1,000x or something.

Hopefully simple things like that work for now.

    This is uncontroversial….

    You: NOAA/GSA

Me: Going glacially slow ~1mph, and carefully so as not to wipe out on your wet, POLISHED parking garage floor. I slowly turn my wheel left to turn, but going slow enough to remain vertical. Next second my wheels slide from under me and I go down hard.

Who is the dumb MFer who decided to polish the goddamn concrete making the floor of the garage?! I’ve ridden on ice. This was way worse! Seriously what the fuck.

NOAA confirms this is a known issue (duh), having me submit incident report. Apparently the real assholes here are GSA.

    From several days ago….

For some reason this day drivers were parked all over the place in travel lanes chatting it up with people on the street.

I was heading home, flying down Hillcrest SE as you do when I come around the bend and see a driver just parked in the lane on this narrow hill just hanging out… probably an Uber driver. I hit my brakes hard, but it’s clear that I’d have to really slam them on if I actually want to stop behind this car for the oncoming traffic going up the hill. Big thanks to the guy in the pickup who saw the BS on my side of the road and paused to let me go around without having to take emergency maneuvers. I gave a wave, he waved back. All felt right with the world for a few minutes.

Nice to meet you all last night! Every now and then I’m reminded how crazy this whole thing is, mostly that it’s completely home grown. I wonder if there’s any other groups in the country that have something like this.

I’m in Del Ray, and am also going to try to ride to work everyday. I also anticipate getting back into randonneuring by March and getting out for a couple 100K and 200Ks eventually. Also looking forward to checking out more of Alexandria. As I was heading out last night I met Rimas who is also up for a trip to a local brewery, coffee shop, donuts etc…

    See you all soon, Chris

Sweet! Crystal City, or is it “National Landing” now?
    I’ll be there.
