I’ve been wondering about a possible bike station at the Pentagon Metro
Page 5-32 of the plan says “Stations will also be placed at Arlington National Cemetary and at the Pentagon pending approval by the National Park Service and Department of Defense respectively.”
Of course the best way to ensure that DoD approval is for Pentagon employees to make some noise about it. DoD couldn’t care less about Arlington’s desires.

ParticipantDo I have my rose-colored glasses on or is the final draft expansion plan essentially my suggestion + a route up the Glebe Corridor?

I nominate that area (Clarendon Circle) as the worst intersection in Arlington for all users.
Some improvements are on the way. I don’t think we’ll get any earth shattering improvements without further redevelopment in the area (primarily the Silver Diner, though if Red Top sold out that could bring some nice improvements as well).

Yeah sometimes someone’s porch or garage is all you can get to… thinking about it more I would say that knocking or ringing the doorbell is the best technique to ask if it’s ok and just let them know you’re there as opposed to just squatting on someone’s porch. Especially in VA! Last weekend we stopped at a frozen custard place in Ashburn after a ride and some dude came in packing heat. Seriously? Is a gun necessary to buy a little custard?
What you don’t realize is that 3/4 of the customers were packing, they just had concealed carry permits.

ParticipantLast I knew, Arlington didn’t monitor SeeClickFix. Has that changed? Anybody know if any of the other local jurisdictions do?

Did it yesterday. One additional thing I asked for was to see the treatment of Carling Springs Rd going over the bridge. Another thing that was a bit confusing was that all the renderings include the center median strip which I understood was to be eliminated.
George Mason Drive isn’t changing (as far as I know); the cross-section you’re shown at the beginning of the survey IS the treatment of Carlin Springs Rd going over the bridge. You see a median in the renderings because it is George Mason Drive you’re seeing in the renderings (Carlin Springs Rd being up on the bridge itself). It is Carlin Springs Rd as it goes over the bridge that is getting bike lanes and 8′ sidewalks. (Other improvements to Carlin Springs Rd are coming as part of other projects).

ParticipantThere was a truck parked on the W&OD hill just up from the Weenie Beenie this morning with a bunch of “Bike Trail Closed Ahead” signs in the back – perhaps a brief closure is coming today relating to resurfacing they’re doing on Walter Reed?

ParticipantI’m partial to Pearl Izumi Canyon Shorts. They’re not super-tight, but they also aren’t so baggy as to get in your way. They consist of a liner with chamois and an over-short with a single zippered pocket. For long rides I wear the whole kit, for shorter rides I’ll often wear the liner under standard khakis.

ParticipantThe NPS website was down for several hours yesterday. Everything appears to be back up.

ParticipantI believe 6′ is the AASHTO recommended spacing for bollards.

And they’re black! That will show up real well in low light conditions. 😡
Anybody know who the lead agency is on this project? Unless they’re getting reflective markings there is no way that meets AASHTO. How far apart are they?

My handlebar mirror swivels left and right and up and down. Is it special or do you mean something else by “aimed’?

ParticipantI have the Mirrycle Mirror on my hybrid and use it constantly – I like to always know whether it is safe to bail out of the bike lane into the traffic lane in case of emergency. As a near-sighted glasses wearer, I find it difficult to quickly glance backward over my shoulder far enough to be able to see traffic through my glasses rather than just in my blurry peripheral vision, the mirror makes this mostly moot.
Actually, I have to admit I often find myself instinctively looking for it even when I’m not on the bike (for instance, when I’m pushing my son in his stroller).
Mirrycle makes mirrors for other types of handlebars as well.

ParticipantAt the Gravelly Point meeting NPS seemed open to suggestions on what to do about the slippery boardwalks, so if you have a specific material suggestion you should pass it their way, especially if you can point to another boardwalk trail somewhere that you feel is significantly better – something to the effect of “Hey the suchandsuch trail in someotherpark has a boardwalk section which never seems to get slippery, you should contact them to see what they use.”
