I went for a run just now and passed a crash scene on Washington Blvd, just across from Red Top Cabs. The road had been blocked off and several emergency vehicles were there.

Just when I passed by a person was placed in the ambulance, a mountain bike was parked against the ambulance so I’m assuming it was a bicyclist.

Washington Blvd doesn’t have any bicycle facilities, and the road condition is pretty poor. I hope the person on the bike is okay.

Is this in Falls Church where Washington St and Broad street meet? If so I ride near there every morning heading west on Washington, then I make a right on Park before the Broad intersection, near Kaiser. This is a tough place to ride and I wouldn’t ride it other than early morning. Not much in the way of room, curbs are high, and the roads are riddled with potholes the size of lake Erie. I have seen two motorcycle wrecks already this year. If you here anything else please update us. A quick check on local sites revealed nothing.

Bugger, just realized where you mean, and of course if I had not been completely distracted I would have realized you said “Arlington” and Wash Blvd not Street…. Sorry! Regardless, hope the rider is OK.

There was a crash at Commonwealth & Reed in Alexandria at about 6:30 PM. I passed by just after it happened. The cyclist was up and limping, car tried to take off but some pedestrians stopped it and waved down a police officer.

That’s scary – such a nice wide low traffic road. I never feel unsafe on Commonwealth.

Sounds like it is in the Clarendon area by the parking lot for St Charles Boromeo Catholic Church.

Yeah, that’s exactly the spot. I couldn’t find any mention in the local press either, only a reference by another runner here http://www.arlnow.com/forums/misc/bike-accident-in-front-of-red-top-cab-last-night/

I nominate that area (Clarendon Circle) as the worst intersection in Arlington for all users.

They should make it into a circle again.

Some improvements are on the way. I don’t think we’ll get any earth shattering improvements without further redevelopment in the area (primarily the Silver Diner, though if Red Top sold out that could bring some nice improvements as well).

I think I might have posted this here before, but last year our local civic association had a presentation by a couple of older long-time residents about living here since the 30s. The woman told us that even when she was 12 her mother wouldn’t let her walk to school alone because crossing Clarendon Circle was too dangerous. And this was in the early 40s.
