Who owned CaBi before Lyft bought it? I thought it was the jurisdictions in which it operates. If so, why would ArlCo need to be funding it into the future?

The jurisdictions own CaBi including all of the bikes and all of the stations.

CaBi is operated, under contract, by a company called Motivate (formerly called Alta bikeshare).

    Motivate was bought by Lyft.

So now the jurisdictions send their contract money to a company controlled by Lyft, rather than to a company that isn’t controlled by Lyft.

Note: Arlington has 6 stations to be (theoretically) installed soon (designated on the map with ’19,’ i.e., 2019), and almost twenty more designated (in green) as “potential future sites” in the Capital Bikeshare expansion Google Map layer. Even these new six incoming and the possible twenty would still be a bare-bones attempt at reasonably comprehensive county coverage.

Don’t expect a lot of CaBi expansion in Arlington anytime soon. CaBi’s capital budget was obliterated in the most recent Capital Improvement Plan. They’ve basically just got enough to replace stations and bikes as they reach end of life.

Unfortunately, by having the bike/ped bridge upstream (so between the rail bridge and Metro bridge), doesn’t it complicate that connection a bit since you have to somehow cross the train tracks?

Indeed. Simplifies the connection to Long Bridge Park, but complicates any potential connection to Case Bridge.

Connectivity – On the Arlington side, the trail bridge will connect to the esplanade at Long Bridge Park, but it won’t connect all the way to the SW waterfront. DDOT and FRA have said that the space is too narrow on the DC side to accommodate the new rail tracks and the bike/ped bridge. The bridge will therefore end at Ohio Drive SW (see slide 27). Personally, in my mind, whether it’s a bridge connection to DC or an appropriate protected facility on the road, etc., something needs to be done to complete the connectivity.

Seems like a Case Bridge connection could be relatively straightforward. Things don’t get too squeezy until NPS HQ. Yellow would be new bridge/trail, green is existing Case Bridge sidepath to Banneker Circle.

If anyone wants to check out the trail from afar, I uploaded some geotagged photos to mapillary.

Have you been talking to Arlington or Falls Church City? I believe portions of Isaac Crossman are in Arlington but the vast majority (including the gravel nature trail) is in Falls Church and it is Falls Church that has issues with bikes in the park.

The new bridge over Lee Highway will not be re-routing the trail. There will be temporary detours occasionally during construction that will re-route via Westmoreland St.

This far out, this feels more like an approximate time frame rather than a construction schedule. Undoubtedly detours would be necessary, but I would think construction could be staged in such a way as to minimize the time during which it would be impossible to get both to the TR Bridge and the MVT from the TR Island parking lot.

According to the project web page, “trail user traffic will be maintained during construction with the use of a detour” so here’s hoping.

    Need to keep pushing.

Ladies and gentlemen, your Professional County Transportation Staff:
As this was raised with the review of the retail portion of the Crystal Square project and the SPRC meeting in September, Staff has looked at this issue and based on several discussions with over the past 9 months, a protected bike lane (cycle track) is not recommended in this location. County staff does not recommend this as there is not enough room to provide the protected bike lane with all the constraints within the ROW. Trying to balance the need for travel lanes required for vehicles and buses, the Crystal City Sector Plan specified streetscape, and maintaining some of the existing building footprints does not provide flexibility to revise the proposed on-street bike lane to a protected bike lane. There is currently a portion of the streetscape area near the proposed grocery store on Crystal Drive that does not meet the Sector Plan standards and this would become further narrowed if a protected bike lane is provided. With the proposed development, the amount of on-street parking is greatly reduced and the interaction with bicyclists and parking vehicles will be minimized. Additionally, as part of a County project, an off-street trail is being constructed adjacent to Clark-Bell Street that will provide an option for pedestrians and cyclists to traverse the area that is protected from all vehicle traffic.

The concept introduced by Chris Slatt, was shared with staff and JBG Smith after the September SPRC meeting. Staff asked JBGS to review the concept and provide a more refined drawing for additional review. Staff can review this issue further with JBGS but I at least wanted to make you aware of the constraints from staff perspective for consideration approaching the upcoming hearing.

The part they’re talking about is on Crystal Drive, near 15th Street. Here’s the “pinch point” as currently proposed with an unprotected bike lane:
    no pbl pinch point.png

Here’s my PBL version, which basically keeps the sidewalk the same width by just moving the bushes over to between the bike lane and the cars. By my math, it’s still an 8′ clear width sidewalk.

And at the end of the day, if for some reason that’s not feasible…are shrubs more important than lives? Than enabling carbon-neutral transportation?

Please sign, even if you don’t care about Crystal City or ride in Crystal City! This also sends the message to staff that “bike lanes” are no longer a good enough default. The default needs to be protection.

Ah, but they’ve added flags at the highly dangerous crossing.

    Flags.

They make it easier for the park police to locate your corpse so they can more quickly re-open the roadway.

Does anyone know what the Arl Co/NVRPA plans are to ameliorate, correct the damage where the orange storm fencing is located? I had posted/predicted this issue over four years ago.

This quote from the NVRPA July Board Meeting minutes gives me some hope that it’s being handled, but I don’t know anything further (like timeline):

“The erosion problem on the section of the W&OD owned by Arlington County was discussed, and it was suggested that NOVA Parks contribute $50,000 from the “Restricted Fund” to Arlington to solve the issue.

Motion by Mr. Tabert, seconded by Mr. Ferguson, to authorize funding of erosion work next to the W&OD in Arlington, as discussed.”

In all seriousness, I suppose (hope?) they did a structural evaluation to make sure the integrity of the bridge itself has not been compromised…

NPS actually answered questions on Twitter about this and confirmed that structural engineers inspected the entirety of the bridge:

A rare moment of actual back and forth on social media from NPS. Would like to see more of it.
