Hey Mark, FYI Deena was maybe looking for a pilot this weekend if you’re feeling better. She has her own tandem now. -Jeff
I’ll probably make the 10am ride. Does she have a way to get the tandem to the shop? I’m not sure if I’m driving there, or biking there. It depends on how early I wake up, and whether Tony is coming along or not.

ParticipantI’ve been the subject of a few mass emails…
Quote:[FONT=Default Sans Serif,Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif] Colleagues,We noticed that some vehicles were parking in front of the bike rack and impeding access. Please note that vehicular parking is not allowed in front of the bike rack which must be accessible at all times and during the four seasons (Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring) of the year.
As tempting as it is to park your vehicle in the open space in front of the bike rack, please use the designated vehicular parking spaces in the parking lot instead.
With that in mind, thanks in advance for complying with our request.
Thanks! Have a wonderful day!
I’m the only one who ever rides their bike in.

I’ve been fortunate to be able to ride almost every day since I moved about 5 weeks ago, because I moved quite a bit closer to my work. But when I lived on the Hill and my ride was kind of a pain, I also had a really hard time commuting through last winter (my first winter of riding). Hell, even this summer I was only bike commuting 2-3 days a week. One thing to remember is that not riding doesn’t make you a bad person or not one of the cool kids. If you beat yourself up for not riding, you’ll probably be more likely to just get frustrated and stop riding altogether for the winter. Nothing wrong with that, but picking it up again in the spring could be tougher, and you’ll be a much stronger rider going into summer if you ride during the winter/spring. As I kept telling myself, the fact that you ride even once makes you a badass, since most people will never do it…so focus on picking a few nice days to ride and enjoy those rides. If that ends up only being one day a week, who cares? That’s still pretty good, particularly since I know you have a pretty rough bike commute.
thanks, great words of wisdom there. I don’t think I beat myself up too badly, but I do wish I’d ride more. I’m still fighting this cold, and was all prep’d to ride this morning. Once again, I didn’t, but felt my excuse was valid. I’m still coughing up a lot of crap out of my chest. I did, however, stop deciding whether to use my trainer or not based on whether I was going to ride the next day or not. That way, no matter what, I at least got a decent trainer ride in. Actually, the trainer feels harder than a real ride! So I’m still getting my exercise in now, which makes me feel OK about not riding because I’m too wimpy LOL.

ParticipantThe best laid plans…..
So, I went to bed early. I woke up ~30 minutes before the alarm, and was feeling happy that I’d slept well, looking forward to my alarm going off and actually (finally) riding to work. My alarm goes off and I wake back up, the first wimpy thought through my head is “holy shit, it’s cold”. So, I went back to sleep until my “driving today alarm” went off. Now, once again, I’m disappointed that I didn’t ride in.
Maybe I need to sell my car so I actually don’t have a choice but to ride

ParticipantI love how she says “the end” and smirks, like the dork on the other end of the camera doesn’t know how to turn it off. Zanna is awesome

ParticipantI’ve always been allergic to any form of exercise (I break in to a sweat, rapid heart rate, vomit, shortness of breath, etc). This finalizes it, exercise is bad for you. I’m done.

ParticipantI think you’ll need 3 of those 6.5Kw generators to run that 18Kw light. Other than that, totally do-able.

Participantannnnnd, once again, I could not wake up in time to ride in
I’m seriously upset that I haven’t been able to get up and ride in this week. How often do we have such beautiful weather in December??!! Well, I guess we will in the future, if you believe all this bullhockey about global warming and such other nonsense (you probably also believe the world will end in a few days!! Silly Mayans.)
Between the superflu (Captain Tripps) I had (ok, just a really bad cold) since the weekend, and my doctor switching my sleep medicine on me, I’m barely waking up in time to DRIVE in!
In other news, I did get that trainer I’ve been wanting. Saved hundreds, thanks Craigslist! So I got some cycling in, yay me.

ParticipantI snagged up a lovely Kurt Kinetic trainer for $125 off CL. Hooked up my Garmin last night and played around with it for about 30 minutes, it’s cool to see Strava identified it as a “Stationary” ride, but I’m wondering if you can distinguish between it and real rides. I haven’t seen anything clearly stated yet, but I imagine this contest should exclude any such rides. Typically, they disallow any “manual” entries, but I’m sure we have some people participating that don’t have a device capable of tracking their rides?

ParticipantI was doing some searching, and found this thread. Rcannon, did you ever figure out what to do about a dog trailer? My son and I are going to be doing some bike-camping this next year, and he (of course) wants to take his dog along. I was figuring that any old trailer might do, but she’s a “medium” sized dog. She’s not terribly heavy, but probably bigger than some medium sized kids. I will probably pick up two trailers, one for the dog and one for extra camping equipment, food, etc.
I see quite a few trailers for sale on craigslist, and they’re pretty reasonably priced (under $100 for many of them). Any thing I should look out for when buying a trailer? Certain types of hitches, wheels, etc? Thanks

Sony Ericsson makes a few, but they’re not too popular here in the states. There is also the HTC Rhyme and the Motorola MOTOACTIV
Bottom line is though, Garmin has the corner on the market for advanced data gathering in sport.
There are some bluetooth 4 (a.k.a. BLE, BTLE, BTSmart, ad nauseum) compatible devices now, and a lot of new phones support BT4. My Droid Razr MAXX is one of them. … and BT4 accessories
sorry for the thread hi-jack. I just get worked up when someone “corners” a market (looking at you Garmin). They basically own ANT, and if it weren’t for their investment in ANT, I think we’d see a lot better BLE adoption. BLE accessories being available for smart phones will probably kill some Garmin business, and I think they know that.

I’m just beginning to poke at the code a bit. Here’s my suggestion: Have teams managed as Strava clubs. I can pull the membership (and more importantly, id numbers) programmatically through the Strava APIs.
Also, would anyone mind having everyone in the BikeArlington Strava club be a de-facto participant? That would make the individual scoring and prizes easy, especially for those who don’t find a team.
Slackers can use this team if they want
I created it some time ago. http://app.strava.com/clubs/i-crit-my-pants

ParticipantI definitely don’t bike as much during the winter, so if anyone is on the edge about joining this challenge because you don’t want to drag down a team due to your low mileage…. we could always create a slacker team
